Television Star Trek

I am not talking about quality (tbf,i like it). I am talking about theme. Picard is in ST theme. Discovery is like classic sci-fi show.
I'm not sure I'd even agree with that. I see very little of the themes explored in TNG and the ethical aspects and philosophy are very different.

I'm glad you enjoyed it but I found it to be an often bewildering (I have absolutely no idea what the Romulans' plot and motivation was meant to be at all for instance and Picard's behaviours were so out of character that I just found the show mystifying by about 4 episodes in) and unnecessary addendum to a great show that ended well.

Watched the second episode now and it was a lot better. I think the show really shines when it’s not focusing on Michael since she’s a pretty poor character and the actress is quite bad. Unfortunately that doesn’t happen often.

It’s basically Star Trek: andromeda/firefly now. I don’t like how lazy the show is but I keep reminding myself this isn’t the Star Trek I like. I mean “the burn”... just lazy

After rewatching TNG earlier in the year, I bought Voyager. Struggling with it. Haven't finished series one yet. Did anyone like Janeway and the crew?
Does it improve after the first series?

It's uneven all the way, probably the worst of old Trek. It's also not very linear so you can skip a few eps to get to better ones. Gets a little better with the last episode of S3. Episodes that focus on the Doctor or Seven are good.

Yeah it does get better. Still found some of the crew unlikeable but the stories improve.

Agreed, episode two was a very good episode.

Currently rewatching DS9 as I realise it's on Netflix. I remember it starting slow, but does anyone remember which season Sisko gets the goatee? Roughly coincides with it getting going as far as I remember. On S3 so far, some good episodes but lots of eastenders in space stuff.

Also, does anyone else loathe holodeck episodes? The entirety of human history to choose from, and centuries of fiction in between to explore yet they're all early 20th century crime related stuff. Never got that.

I'm not a fan either, she doesn't really seem to have a flaw does she?

It's also weird, that i'm watching a Star Trek show and the doctor doesn't annoy me. A very weird feeling.
Well, about doctors.
The Doctor is one of best characters in general for me. Bones was also great.
Bashir and Phlox were ok. This doc from discovery is meh.

Pulaski and Crusher were annoying as hell. I hate Crusher family.

If it's not 3 (which is what I thought) it's definitely the start of 4. Ya the holodeck is a total lack of imagination (similarly with so many people's interests being either shakespeare or something from the 50s and nothing else, and that's true of all the series). I liked the ds9 holodeck james bond parody episode though.

edit - this is funny but probably needs a content warning for every -ism, the holodeck stuff starts at 7:45.
e again - heard the clip, it's their least offensive clip ever.

Discovery brought gender pronouns into its storyline this episode, with one character asking to be called 'they/them'.

I think the writers are deliberately triggering all the old-fashioned TNG fans who wish that Star Trek was still a nineties version of the future.

Does this season still have the red headed chick who sounds like an up-talking Starbucks barista ?

I'm not a huge fan of this season. For a jump centuries into the future I expected more.

I don't care about The Burn, have no interest in what caused it and find it funny that Discovery's people would be the ones to find the reason. You know, those who just arrived into a future far advanced from what they knew.

It's because they've got the spore drive, which makes them the only ship in the galaxy capable of covering enough distance to put the pieces of the puzzle together.

The fact that hundreds of years of advanced technology couldn't do that is kind of weird.

Time does not equal advancement.

It's regressed technology, with a few dotted bits of advanced technology thrown into the mix. But without warp travel, there's no way to join those dots regardless of how much time has passed.

It's kind of like if the earth today lost the ability to use electricity. 900 years wouldn't necessarily be enough to bring us back to where we were.

I think ST fans are more open minded about this ^
Star Wars fans less so.

Wasn't it Michael who discovered this mini time-difference in the Burn before she even rejoined Discovery?

She managed to buy a couple of black boxes from salvagers. Not enough to piece together anything. And certainly not enough without the SB19 data from Ni'Var.

"The Outcast" (S05, E17) is the 117th episode of the American science fiction television series Star Trek: The Next Generation.
In this episode, Riker falls in love with Soren, a member of an androgynous race which finds gender specificity unacceptable.

Reading Twitter and seeing people complain that the pronouns scene was too political for Star Trek. Galaxy brain levels of stupid.

This was a reddit thread about new Trek (Picard) and its politics, which I liked

I hate nutrek because it's so woke, I want to go back to apolitical stories like this one

It is not the "wokeness" Star Trek as many have pointed out has always done political and social commentary. It is the mallet to the face levels of subtlety , and the jarringly self congratulatory preachiness that turns people off. Better writing and you can tell any story.

Picard was far worse than Discovery.

Why, in this nineties version of the future, would equality and progressiveness, a foundation of this optimistic view of the future, not fit?
What wouldn't fit the nineties version of the future is shooty bang bang unresolved mystery roulette nonsense and Jean-Luc Picard turning into an emotional basket case lunatic pretending to be Han Solo if Han Solo lived in a Universe where things made even less sense than the average Star Wars movie.

Blasphemy. You breached all directives with that statement.
