Southport knife attack - 3 children dead & others injured | killer gets 52 years +

The mother of one of the surviving children - "Child A" (surviving children can't be named due to a court order) - is now sharing some thoughts from her daughter.

Child A thought the attack was a prank and when Axel Rudakubana approached her with the knife, she told him she "didn't want one" - she "didn't want to play". Rudakubana then attacked her.

"Our world collapsed in that moment and we are still trying to rebuild it," the girl's mother says.

"When she woke up [from surgery] she lunged forward and reached her arms out - reaching for her best friend... still believing she was in danger, trying to get to her."

"They were separated in the most terrifying way," her mother adds.

:(

Axel Rudakubana sentenced to minimum of 52 years in jail

Axel Rudakubana, 18, will be jailed for a minimum of 52 years, the judge says.

The judge says the sentences will run concurrently, meaning they will be served at same time.

He concludes that it is highly likely Rudakubana will never be released.

so for the next 52 years the tax payers have to feed and cloth that fecking evil piece of shit, 52 years making sure he is fed and kept warm and heathy!!!
feck that he should be put to death and done now before he costs us any more money, he deserves NOTHING , he should forfeit his right to live.
This boils my piss

The parent statements are completely sobering, I can't even imagine the grief or how I could ever move on from it.

I just don't get it.

How is it not three life sentences? I hope he gets what he truly deserves in prison.

I think most of them never really do. I’m convinced i would be one of those parents who could never get past or through it.

There's not a chance he will be paroled even if he makes it to 70. He will die in prison one way or another.

Yeah evil feckers like him should have all their rights stripped away and if he wants to pull more crap like starving himself then they should just let him rot away and die a slow death. He's shown absolutely no remorse, in his sick mind he believes he's done something good. He's so far gone he's just not worth keeping alive.

For U18's the usual life sentence length starts at is 12 years so this is a lot more than usual

In reality he's unlikely to ever get out, even if no one does for him inside the chances of him getting released is in the hands of a politician and I don't see any politician who wishes to remain one ever signing off on it

Cannot imagine the pain the parents must be suffering.

RIP little ones

I was quite surprised by how long the minimum was. I don't think I've ever seen one that's over 50 years. I guess that's got more to do with anyone who would be eligible for such a sentence would be given a whole life term instead and he can't be because of his age. There probably aren't many under 18s who have committed a crime that would usually have merited a whole life sentence .

It would be a real shame if something happened to him in prison.

Send him to one of those hot, dirty gang run prisons in South America, in one of those 100m2 cells with 100 prisoners and only 80 beds.

Tell them all what he did.

I still want to know what the hell happened to him for this to happen. I hope we find out. Publish his entire internet history, his phone records. How does a monster like this end up being created?

That’s what I am wondering too. He wasn’t born inherently evil. So who groomed him and how

The only other time was the Manchester bombers brother i heard, he got 55 years but was 22 I think.

I don’t support the death penalty, but they should really make an exception for cases like these. He doesn’t deserve taxpayer funds.

Saw some of the statements from victims and families, and it’s just so utterly heartbreaking.

My heart aches just thinking about them, how they must feel I can’t comprehend.

People calling for the death penalty, I understand, it's really emotional. But, thank God, we are better than him. Let him rot in solitary confinement, never seeing the sky or feeling the breeze.

That doesn’t answer the question though
From his defence barrister:

Stan Reiz KC, mitigating, told the court Rudakubana had appeared to have been a "normal child" until he reached 13.

Mr Reiz said: "There is no psychiatric evidence before the court that could suggest that a mental disorder contributed to the defendant's actions.

"However, he did make a transition from a normal, well-disciplined child to someone who was capable of committing acts of such shocking and senseless violence."

Not yet an answer, but an indication that this had been building for 4 years.

The solution to the high cost of a long prison sentence should be public torture and humiliation in a Colusseum style arena. Plenty of people would pay for a front row seat to see this fecker fed to some lions. Think of the lucrative broadcasting deal. It could be the biggest pay per view event of all time.

For less heinous crimes just have a few MMA fighters instead of lions. Don't want to kill the stars of the show too early.

I'm in no way trying to explain his actions but there is definitely a problem in UK schools where you have young kids acting violently then being excluded and going to Pupil Referral Units. Pupils attending these are sometimes targeted by gangs, some for sexual exploitation, others for criminal exploitation. Others are just disturbed young minds that require major treatment.

However, if a kid is deemed too violent for the PRU then they can be left in limbo - left to study from home... not getting any education while they are "assessed" and "places sought" in various other oversubscribed options until they approach being 18 and can be ticked off the list of being the local education departments problem anymore.

I know the previous system of "borstals" and young offenders institutes had some tales of awful abuse but they were a place where lads like this could have been detained in a safer way. Leaving him with his parents was a total abdication of responsibility.

Kids are truly being left adrift at 16, or earlier if they get into trouble. This kid was referred multiple times...lots of people knew he was heading for a potentially horrendous violent outcome. Nothing was done.

"Care in the Community" is what was promised when the Tories dismantled the architecture we had in place around serious mental health and youth offending. In reality we have a mental health crisis using up the resources of Police, Ambulance and NHS and providing us with scant protection for when the wheels come off.

So his brief is arguing he doesn't have a mental problem to excuse his actions, I'd have thought he would have been arguing the opposite.

I'm just waiting for violent video games, TV and movies to be brought up by someone as an explanation/excuse and how they must all be banned

Thanks for the insight, deeply sad and troubling. So this is partly down to another Tory feck up? What a mess. Probably a lot more like him out there too.

He's never getting out ever, after 52 years his parole will be denied every single time and thank feck for that, he'll rot in prison forever I'd say he'd be haunted by the things he has done but when I look at those photos he doesn't look like his eyes have any life in them

Yep, the media have talked about his referrals to the Prevent programme, but not of the general question about how he should have been managed. The Prevent programme, not surprisingly, bounced the problem back to the police and mental health services because their job description is essentially about dealing with ideological and political indoctrination - not with every violent and potentially violent young person, however obsessed with death and murder they had become. Most referrals to Prevent get bounced back for similar reasons.

The court found him fit to plea, essentially because he did know that he was killing children and that it was against the law - it doesn't have to explain how a sane person could commit acts so evil.

He might have been fit to plea but was he fit to live in normal society? No way. If there had ever been a chance to stop him reaching these depths, it was gone by the time he got in that taxi - his parents knew it and feared it. The police had visited him multiple times. So who was there to intervene and where should he have been living?

I hope that becomes the focus of any follow-up enquiry. I fear that it'll turn into something different. Some pointless attempt to redefine terrorism perhaps or an obsession over why the judge couldn't set a whole life sentence.

I thought it turned out that he was, after all, following some Al Qaeda texts online? May have been radicalised or he’s took himself down that path through a combination of his own beliefs and what he was reading?
