It would be better having Maclaren as caretaker manager than Southgate coming in. But in all fairness changing a manager is similar to a sticking plaster until we replace 2/3s of the squad and organise our recruitment team.

He (Southgate) could literally do no worse (than) EtH.

He could, and likely would.

Think about EtH won a trophy in his first attempt in English football, whereas Gareth 'falling upwards' Southgate is nearly twenty years into his managerial career, won zilch and relegated the only club side he has managed.

We should be afraid if Southgate gets the job. Very afraid.

It'll point to Ineos continuing the 'mate's rates' cronyism which has blighted us since Fergie.

It's a solid no from me.

88% is as close to unanimous as I can remember seeing on a Caf poll.

Southgate is similar to Chris Coleman when at Wales, a good manager at national team level, but god awful when it comes to a league team. He shouldn't be in the conversation for the United job

Nope, whether you think he is or isn't better than ETH isn't the point. If we change manager we should be going for elite only. Bringing in Southgate won't make us a title challenging side. I think it would be like Moyes all over again.

I’ll give him a chance if he’s coming just like I would for any other manager coming in

Just out of interest, why is he so unpopular or despised on the Caf, if that’s an appropriate word?

Sir Jim

"We’ll decide, that team of people, it’ll be us, plus the CEO, sporting director, probably the recruitment guys what that style of football is and that will be the Manchester United style of football. And the coach will have to play that style of football. "

Southgate is probably the only manager that would allow to be told how to play.

A big problem with Southgate would be trying to sack him, he's a media darling and no problema could be attributed to him.

He can't just choose from a good selection of players, he'd be limited to a squad of around 30-40 for most of the season so he'd have to get a tune out of them. United would be blamed for not providing him with 100 players to choose from.

He'd be close to my last choice, possibly the last choice from all the names being mentioned, but I'd still 100% prefer him over keeping ten Hag.

If INEOS were dithering between giving Southgate the job and keeping ten Hag, I would have no hope for this club anyway though.

Also the fact it'd be Brailsford and Ashworth's choice and their first major acts in charge, against common sense and the view of any fan with a brain in their head. And everyone would know that without their input he wouldnt get anywhere near a job this big.

So when the wheels come off under Southgate, their necks would be on the chopping block with his.

I could be at this all day. I'd never stop thinking of reasons.

Last time he was in club management was 10 years ago when he took over Europa League Finalists and then got them relegated.

He's dour. He wears a waistcoat. His football is shite, pragmatic and boring. He picks Jordan Henderson to play football. He's wasted a top class England side. He looks like a horse. Anyway I'll stop there.

Probably going to get slaughtered for this but I feel he could somewhat work for a year or two to give a reset and make your training ground a happier camp and place to be like he did with England.

The problem however (like with the FA) is will your board be proactive enough to then make the switch when it gets to the point he's ran his course?

Sure, he could also works for Chelsea. Why don't you consider him after Poch?

Which is why I think it’s just rumours. INEOS will be aware of the backlash and won’t want that for their first summer. I also think they want us to play attacking football which is why I think they’ll hire a more attack minded manager.

Let’s look at it this way… would you and your fans be happy for him to takeover Poch?

This is essentially just another Ole scenario.

After we have Brailsford, Berrada, Ashworth and Wilcox, and then the best we could come out with for a manager is Southgate. It's like our data analysts analysing 800 RBs before signing AWB.

Its like asking who I would like to spend a weekend with, Jeffrey Dahmer or Harold Shipman.

Chances are you don't come back from either choice.

Ten Hag’s Ajax was an exciting side, is bald like Pep, was said to be a great coach for the players and was therefore the Caf’s hipster choice. Look how that has turn out now?

There won't be any happy camp there is no hiding place in Club football if results aren't there and to be honest this malarkey about happy camp is overstated a bit thing is when teams are actually winning or progressing these things tend not to matter much but gets exaggerated if results aren't there .

Southgate football is dour and uninspiring and while his tactics might have merit in international football but in league it could backfire spectacularly with most teams in the league capable of hurting big boys unlike International football .

I wouldn't want the fan opinion to factor into INEOS' decision anyway tbh. I'd have my concerns about Southgate, particularly that he would be late to arrive due to the Euros, but I'll give INEOS at least half a year before judging them. Personally I think Tuchel is far and away the best choice, but perhaps Wilcox and Ashworth think differently, and they've both done very well in their professional careers so far.

200+ votes now, 4 of those are yes, 3 of those are opposition fans, so that must mean @FrankDrebin is actually Gareth Southgate.

Will lose faith in the new upstairs regime immediately if they appoint him.

Seems to be a lot of noise around this and he has an association with Dan Ashworth through England. Would you be happy with the appointment? Maybe the mods could add a poll to gauge opinion.

Lazy media driven narrative. It is not happening.

Where does this link come from? This can't be a real thing?

I think it's been a lingering rumour ever since INEOS takeover that they are fans of Southgate. I don't think it goes anything further than that - e.g. any of the INEOS crew working with him in the past etc or anything. EDIT: There is the Ashworth link but that's tenuous and he's not starting anytime soon anyway.

It would be one of the most bizarre appointments in football. Southgate's last job in club football (which was his only one btw) was 15 years ago where it ended with Middlesborough relegated.
