SJR is holding out for Southgate to win the Euros so he can bring him in and make a statement of intent by saying “I’ve got us the best England manager for 60 years… he’s the one to take us back to the top… he has the man management skills, he has experience at the highest level, he can deliver under pressure… and I’ve convinced him to leave his England role to take up the challenge of bringing glory back to the biggest club in the country…”
I was indifferent to England’s chances in the Euros but now I’m praying for them to get utterly destroyed.

If we end up with Southgate I'll be Southgate out, Ashworth out and Ineos out.

Or probably just find a new league to watch.

If he actually gets appointed, I might just skip watching matches this season.... seriously. Until he (inevitably) gets fired.

I see this bloke each year with news, but genuinely no idea if he's a total bullshitter or tier 1.

Please please please be a total bullshitter.

I'm a better director of football if these cnuts land on Southgate as the manager to take United forward.

Can we all stand outside the ground and stop him getting in? I’m being serious

It is incredibly concerning if he is truly under consideration.
Thing that's gets me is that no top PL side worth their salt have even floated his name out there for their jobs at any point over the years yet here we reportedly are making heart eyes over him for the last 1-2 years...

Do the lot at the club know something that everyone else doesn't in regards of his capacity to be a succeasful top flight manager outside of him being an English manager with name recognition?

No if they like him it's because Brailsford likes his status as England manager and the "brings good vibes, statesmanlike" labels he has, and Ashworth is his mate and fits the bullshit England DNA crap he believes in.

I genuinely can't believe there's people who claim to support United who think this is in any way a positive if it happened.

I'm in!

Yep - no amount of new structure nonsense can convince me that this is good. Guys like Conte, Mourinho and Ole will be better choices for me.

He knows feck all. Gareth fecking Southgate will not be Manchester United manager

Big fat yes from me. Main reason, he’s shown he’s adaptable. That’s so important in modern football. Sometimes, something that once worked just stops working and you have to have the nous to pivot. The game moves on. You need to be honest enough with yourself to say “People think the waistcoat make you look like the brother of the bride, who’s been made groomsman, against the wishes of the groom. It has to go”.

We would be a fecking laughing stock to every opposition fanbase if we hired him. The English media would annoyingly be gushing over him for landing it and our fecking owners for giving him a chance to show English managers aren’t dinosaurs.

Palace can lure Glasner. West Ham can hire Lopetegui. We get Southgate

Luckily I think it’s all bullshit guessing/agent briefing anyway.

The problem is there's a massive chunk of fans who will jump on board the second he does something where he meets a minimum expectation.

Like only losing by 1 goal to Liverpool/City. Or being in the top half of the table at Christmas.

Genuinely think he'd struggle with either of those things anyway.

Only plus side would be I couldn't see him "losing" the dressing room because how many of them would have any respect for him in the first place? Especially if Englamd flop at the Euros. It'd be worse than Rangnick in that regard.

I haven’t missed a match in over 20 years but I guess a break would be in order if Southgate is appointed. Each new manager since Fergie has been an ordeal. I knew we were in deep shit when Moyes became manager, and it’s been a meandering descent to midtable mediocrity from there. Southgate would mean our owners have no ambition to ever win the league, let alone put up a fight in the CL. I’ll probably get a season ticket for LAFC and learn their dumb songs. Wait out the 2 year train wreck and then see if INEOS have wised up.

The gap between managing the England team, where he's with the players maybe for 4 weeks/weekends during a year at most, and also managing players who desperately want to play for their country regardless of who the manager is, to managing a club with supposed ambitions to get back to the summit of the Prem and CL, will destroy him very quickly.

It's not hard to foster a positive environment with a national team. He has one difficult moment every 2 years where he has to phone players to tell them they're not on a plane. At United he'll have difficult things to deal with every week.

Can't pretend it can be easy managing England but it is a completely non comparable scenario, the reasons you've mentioned are just part of the reason why.

There's nowhere to hide if you have a bad result or can't get on with one or two of the players. The next game is always a few days away and your squad is the same one you see every day.

You need a tactical plan and a long term coaching strategy, not just to pick from a country full of players who have all been coached by the likes of Pep for you.

You need to be able to defend and pick up your players, not just underhand slag them off to the media and pick someone else for the next tournament.

You don't end up with two thirds of your fixtures being hand me outs against the likes of Malta or Albania. 90% of games you will be found out by the opposition instead of 10%.

The media won't give you a break or put positive spins on things to help get behind the team. They will actively want you to fail, relentlessly.

It'd be an unmitigated disaster. There's the morbid part of me that would almost be entertained if it did happen just because of how ugly it could get.

I will support him fully, just like I do with England, but I do not want it to happen and it utterly depresses me the thought of him being INEOS choice as being the man to kick off this new era. Scary.

I do think there's something in this, people want to believe its all just media nonsense, but I think there's some truth in there.

Not going to lie, as a ST holder the potential for this happening does intrigue me. In the sense that I think the fans will be ready to jump as soon as something bad happens. I think he'd be the first manager to have the whole stadium turn on him. The only positive to it is that he wouldn't last long and wouldn't have this fanatical support that Ole and Ten Hag had/have.

Although I'd probably just end up being depressed watching us play whilst Ineos ignore it all and power on with him regardless.

Yeah the much bigger and rational part of me juat hopes it's nonsense.

It will turn the fans on him and on INEOS. I'm not even sure that would take much more than his initial appointment.

Also I find him genuinely dislikeable and it'd be hard to stomach him as United manager. I didn't like Jose either but at least he had credentials at the time

Any United fan with a sane mind would say no to appointing Southgate, a guy who has not managed a football club for more than a decade and his only stint (Middlesbrough) was a disaster.

"But... but he did well with England" - oh really? Should United hire Rehhagel back in 2013 then? He was the mighty coach who gave EURO 04 glory to Greece, was he doing even better than Southgate? If winning Euro with Greece doesn't make a coach good enough for united, why leading England to Semi-final in WC18 and final in EURO20 can be enough resume for United job?

It does feel like its going to him. Poch and Tuchel are out, can’t see us keeping ETH after publicly interviewing other managers.

If INEOS are genuinely considering him we are so fecked.

Would make Glazers look good.

I always felt like this was just a rumor to draw clicks, but after Tuchel has been ruled out, for the first time I genuinely believe that if we replace ETH it might actually end up being with Southgate

Well. If this shite happen, Sir Ratcliffe is truly a patriot by ruining Man Utd to save the national team of England.

Poll is unanimous. No need for this thread to be opened any longer.

what chat around who might replace ten hag please use the existing thread
