Sorry, but why is Rashford rated here? (Read the context)

Have always said Rashers is just an athlete and not a clinical goal scorer, tonights penalty miss confirms it.
Get shut asap and Sanchos pen was crap as well, oh dear another trophyless season beckons.
feck off, you are an Idiote!

Thought Rashford's penalty was shocking tonight. Did not expect a player of his level and experience to mess about like that. Had he picked a corner, smashed it and seen it saved, I would be thinking "Fair enough", but that steaming pile of crap he served up was spectacularly bad form. Aside from the occasional flashes of brilliance, I've been saying years that he doesn't possess a great footballing brain. Somebody on here once described him as a "brain-dead speed merchant" and that's always stuck in my head. I mean, this last season for the club, he's looked like his head is in another place.

  the state of this post.

He should have came on for Kane in the second half. Not 1 touch in the 18 yard box is shocking and he became useless when the ball was lumped up from the back.

Ignore them Marcus.
You're one of us and a fecking great player who has played through injury for our team. We won't forget it.

His biggest issue is not realising his limitations. Such a trait is admirable in a brand new player but as someone said he’s going into his seventh season and he still tries and do things that are obviously beyond him rather than developing what he’s good at.

Anyone can miss a penalty but to try that suddenly, in a major final just speaks to the fact he doesn’t have his own identity as a player. He’s still trying to ‘be’ someone else, in this case Fernandes.

If we’re honest we’ve all seen major flaws developing in his game for a while that have nothing to do with any penalty kick

He needs to start playing to his strengths and develop the player he is not the player he wants to be in his head. Because he isn’t ever going to be that

Southgate's absolute steadfast refusal to even consider hooking off Kane narrows his options in attack. It's really that simple. Extremely weak manager.

Mbappe missed a penalty. We didn’t get to find out anything new about Rashford the player in this tournament.

I feel so bad for Marcus Rashford. He's one of our players and he's had a tough time this season with his form.

It's tough being part of the squad and having virtually nothing to do, and then taking a massive, life-changing penalty. It was a wretched penalty, the penalty of someone who hasn't played and had no form coming into the tournament. It nearly went in but it felt as if he were off-balance taking it.

Ultimately someone had to take it and he was considered to be one of those five players. Let's be honest, it wasn't a five that you would expect to bring home a trophy and it had a real neck or nothing feel to it.. In that respect, England performed to expectations limited to the tournament itself rather than to historical ones.

Absolutely no issue with his penalty miss, it happens but after some of his performances for United last season, I didn’t have the same confidence that some had that he should’ve had more minutes at this tournament.

That’s not isolated to Rashford though, I don’t think Sancho, Saka or Foden put in enough of a showing to warrant a starting place either.

Rashford before his back injury for a period was world class. This season he's dealt with a shoulder injury and needs surgery. Hopefully he still gets a decent pre season.

Rashford was very average for most of the season and it's the main reason he did not play much in the Euros. Hopefully not playing much this spur him to greater play. If he does not improve his play, I could see him being behind Foden, Graelish, Sancho, Mount and Saka for many years.

He was barely played in the Euros because he's been out of form, and now he missed a penalty he's coming under further scrutiny. if his penalty had gone in, none of this would of been said.

So naturally tonights postings are kneejerk. However, if he's out of form than why take a penalty in the first place?? Maybe he felt confident and volunteered to step up and take one (we dont know).

But either way, he's gonna need to rebuild his confidence next season.

I was worried that if him or Sancho missed it would hit their confidence for our season, I don't really care about England since I'm not English but I would've liked if they won for what it would had meant to the players of our squad.

I don't know why he changed his penalty approach he usually rocket his shots, tonight he tried to took it like Pogba and it didn't work out.

I'm quite worried about Rashford. His end to the season was absolutely diabolical in terms of performance level. I was rather hoping he'd have a decent tournament, or at least come off the bench and make some contributions.

To hardly get a kick and then come on only to miss a penalty continues a bad trend. Hopefully he can have a break, we can look at his shoulder and decide what is necessary and get him back on track but I don't think it's going to be a quick start to the season.

Rashford is a proper talent whom I think is currently lacking a bit of confidence.

As for the penalty miss, it is tough for any player on the bench to simply be thrown in to a high pressure situation premised on a single kick of the ball. It is not surprising both Rashford and Sancho, who were late subs, missed their penalties.

Southgate has rightly taken the blame for that.

I don’t think not having confidence is the problem. I think he may actually be overconfident which at this point is slightly bewildering. He’ll have a summer now of rich 23 year old fun, hopefully get his operation and get back to it. I do hope Ole is a lot more ruthless with his minutes if he’s not working for the team off the ball. If he does that stuff the goals and assists will come back thick and fast.

I’m not going to stick the boot in tonight. Anyone can miss a penalty. He should have whacked it though. His standard penalty is too hard and high to save. Ah well. Onto next season!

Shocking thread, but what else is new here? Rashford clearly isn't right at the moment and needs rest and may, we are told, need surgery. No, he's not the next Wayne Rooney butg we found out some time ago he's not a CF but he is a class footballer up front when he is fit. And on both their top days, I'd go with Rashford over Sterling every time.

May I just say what a fukking colossal waste it was for everyone involved that Rashford delayed his surgery? Sterling was clearly England's best option right now at LW (and played quite a bit at RW during the Euros) and having Rashford sit on the bench to be deployed only for a pk shootout was mindless stupidity by Southgate. Instead of throwing on Rashford for the pk shootout he instead could have gone to Shaw, Sterling and Grealish. A proper manager does not take a cowardly no for an answer.

As it is now, we're going to miss Rashford for the first month or two of the season.

He should have just done his surgery instead of fecking about with England.

The whole tournament was a waste of time for him when Southgate basically didn't want to play him.

At some stage he's gotta realise it's the club that gives him the chance and pays his wages. Get himself rested and back to top form for us would be the best for him.

Wow. I know Rashford has his strengths and weaknesses. Nothing wrong with discussing that. I personally would like to see better movement off the ball to get in the box more often and attack the posts. But some of the replies here have been absolute rubbish. Too much extremism and hyperbole. Some of you should really have a look at yourselves. It's just one penalty miss after being left out of the entire tournament. Let's not get carried away here.

Rashford has been a great player for us the last few years and has played through injuries for us. And he has been an outstanding human being off the pitch as well. We should be supporting him in his hour of need. Personally, I know I will.

Rashford is great player.
The problem is he kinda overrates himself, which leads to the shocking decision making sometimes.

Cristiano Ronaldo missed the third penalty for United in the 2008 Champions League final. It happens.

You don't pick a player from the bench and throw him into the deep end of a penalty shout out, That's silly.

I blame more the coach about the loss but his penalty was horrendous. :wenger:

Sure but Rolando was Rolando. Honestly don’t think England fans are half as annoyed as some United fans are this morning because we’ve seen this pattern develop of a player who for half the season has phoned it in whilst still walking around the pitch and trying flicks and moves that have seldom ever not look self-indulgent, trying to take a clever-dick penalty at such a crucial moment

This is the latest example of how his decision making at vital times is lacking. It’s the most high profile example and racial abuse for it is disgusting. It is though just the latest example

The more egregious examples we see week in week out but so many are blind to it because of his profile as a player who came through ranks

No blame for going to the Euros but maybe he should be mature enough to say to Ole in the season ‘I’m feeling my shoulder or my ankle’ and not make himself available every week if he’s not 100%. There’s a different between refusing to play and being sensible and knowing your own body. Rashford’s injuries only seem to matter after the fact when they’re used to deflect criticism of poor performance.

For me that’s another sign of his immaturity. If you tell your manager you’re fit and available if you’re not 100% you’re letting your team mates down. It’s no good looking back and using the “I’m injured that’s why I played badly” excuse. If you’re injured you shouldn’t be on the pitch.

No doubt in my mind he’s telling Ole and the team he’s fit to play. Physios and coaches can’t get inside a players body; at some point you need to take personal responsibility not play regardless and use any injury as an after-the-event thing.

Now back to pretending all criticism of him is because he missed a penalty

I've been a critic of Rashford but bumping this after he misses a penalty is daft really. Can happen to anybody.

I actually thought Rashford did everything right just misplaced the shot by an inch. Sancho and Saka executed poorly really, telegraphed the penalties and didn't hit them with any power or conviction

Him & sancho looked ideally placed to stretch the Italians at 1-0 or extra time

should have used one of them too conservative
Bizarre he spent so long on the touchline looking like he was about to come on just for them to wait till a minute to go.

Mourinho was wrong on anawful lot of things during his spell at our club. Notably Shaw who has proved him so so so wrong to the point where Mou looks stupid. Anyway - Mourinho was always quite criticual of Rash and what he always said was (1) he's not a young inexperienced player (which is true) he's played ALOT of games now and should be showing more IMO and (2) for his goal record isn't good enough for someone with his reputation (again, true) when you consider a fair number of them are pens. Not saying i don't rate him as a player BUT it's quite apparent that he's not going to be an Mbappe level talent and clearly Gareth thinks so as well given that he wasn't even in contention for selection. injury or no injury he was still in the squad. He's a lovely guy Rash and i admire him for what he does but i think he would benefit hugely from having Roy Keane or someone teaching him how to win and be a right bast**rd. Because, he does have the ability to be somone on the level of Arjen Robben if he wants to be. But, he's too nice most of the time.
