Sony digs at MS over May PS3 sales success

The thing about the PC and the PS3, in my (somewhat amateurish) eyes is that, as Redlambs says, the PC has already surpassed what the PS3 can do to a certain extent.

And that's now, two years after the PS3's release. If, as you suppose Weaste, the PS3 will be around for ten more years, then it's only going to fall further and further behind PCs. Technology increases at an amazing rate, and things like gaming computers are always advancing. That they're already better just goes to show that they're going to keep pulling away. Think how far computers have come in the last ten years alone (although they have been slowing down somewhat in development speeds).

And as far as the Cell goes, what with it being the PS3's trump card over PCs and the XBox 360 -- don't you think someone else will come up with something similar very soon? Or, at least in the case of PCs, it's going to migrate there. I don't believe that, if it is so superior to the standard computer processor (and you seem to suggest it is), that other companies will sit idly by and allow it to be without trying to get in on the technology.

Or that IBM will see this as their chance to get back into the personal computer business by releasing it as a processor for gaming use. It's all money to be made, after all.

IBM are not going into PCs again, that die was cast long ago.

As for other companies doing what Cell is doing, you can search for GPGPU and for Intel "Larrabee".

The graphics hardware in the current consoles is quite enough for now and for quite a long time, as I was discussing with Lambs, how much further do you really need to go in terms of pixel pushing? Of course PCs will advance, but nobody is wanting to put a PC in their living room, and until it all gets 35nm neither would I. The PC has its place, but it will not be in future sat next to your TV, it will not be used as a client, but rather a server, a little like I use mine now.

Interesting take on it, I see what you are thinking. It's criminal the amount of people who own a HD machine don't have a t.v to suit. Also don't get me started on the bloody minded fools who claim they can't see a difference. Stevie Wonder and Arsene Wenger bloody could!

However again, my opinion is based purely on power. Consumers and developers always want more, and the second the PS3 and 360 were out of the door, you can bet your life Sony and M$ had dedicated teams looking to the next.

Even Iwata himself said that others will copy. I don't get the argument about it being a peripheral, it's easily bundled with games like they have done with the balance board and the wheel, and then with signing contracts to force developers to support it. No matter how I disagree with the model. GTA is the interestign thing here, it has fell out of the top 10 software sales after about a month and a bit. It was not just the core gamers that drove that title previously, but now the install base simply is not there. It was people just picking it up before.

The PS3 is approaching two years now, and it's not even begun to show its metal. XB360 hasn't, but I don't see who is going to push it, RARE?

And you are right, I still think the majority of the XB360 and PS3 userbase still do not have them connected to even 720p displays. When these boxes do hit 200 pounds in their full form, and people do have displays to give them justice, then I think that we shall see the shift. Sony dropped the ball with PS2 in my opinion, they should still market the hell out of it.

I know how some of you hate this type of thing, so I will not start a new thread, but in the absense of our resident number watcher, it seems that MGS4 has done its job well last month.

Nintendo DS 783k
Wii 667k
PlayStation 3 406k
PSP 337k
Xbox 360 220k
Playstation 2 189k

MGS4 itself sold 775,000 copies excluding hardware bundles.

Data is for USA.

Who on earth could you be referring to?

I don't see the big problem with PS3 currently outselling 360s as there there are many more 360s still sat in living rooms, so of course the PS3 is likely to outsell it for at least the next year I'd say, until total units sold comes to a level.

Its the PSP figure that surprises me!

Worldwide install base now manx is probably around 22m vs 15m in favour of XB360. It actually doesn't bode well for the HD consoles at all as we approach the point with XB360 on the market for almost 3 years, but price point has and still is probably influencing this.

It's a chicken and the egg, they need sales to drive down the cost, yet they have to lower the cost to drive sales. BD prices have now come down drastically looking at how much it costs for a PC drive (although the one in the PS3 isn't run of the mill with the three lasers going through the same optical pickup), HDD prices have come down thus the move to 80GB being cheaper than sourcing 40GB. Maybe it's possible if there is a new mobo in the works (RSX on 65nm). It's such a shame that PS3 never had Toshiba's SCC in it as originally intended. The chip that replaced it is still a mystery, maybe also moving that onto the same die as RSX as well.

Highest we go is 750gig. No one ever buys them, which is probably why they're on sale. I think they're about $320 AUD full price.

The 250's are flying out the door though. Bunch of sentimentalists want to store all their photos on 'em so they can show their relatives at a 21st century slide night.

Anyway, what's this got to do with PS3's? I don't know. Something.

June - thats when MGS4 was released no?. In that case the reason why Sony sold around 50k more PS3s is simply because it released its one-trick pony for 2008, Metal Gear Solid 4.

I can guarantee that the 360 will sell even more than the PS3 in October, with Gears of War 2 being released.

However I think you'd find that in the US, on a neutral month (that being a month in which no big exclusives are released within ~ +/- 3 months of the current month), the 360 will usually outsell the PS3.

And just to add its nice to see that the DS is completely destroying its Sony opponent

just goes to show that technical superiority doesnt equate superior gaming.

You ought to read the figures again. And MGS4 isn't Sony's one-trick pony.

Not by as big a margain as June's figures, if any margain at all.

I think you ought to look at sales figures since January.

You really think that DS has superior games do you? Cocking Mama? Brain Training? My Baby Girl? My Baby Boy? You could go on ad infinitum.

You're like a bluebottle.

lol....dont get me started, only an extreme Sony fanboy would imagine the PSP having better games:

  • Mario Kart DS
  • Advance Wars: Dual Strike
  • Yoshi's Island DS
  • Final Fantasy IV
  • The World Ends With You
  • Professor Layton and the Curious Village
  • The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
  • New Super Mario Bros.
  • Elite Beat Agents
  • Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time
  • Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
  • Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
  • Metroid Prime: Hunters
  • Trauma Center: Under the Knife 2
  • Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword
  • Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings
  • Bleach: The Blade of Fate
  • Pokemon Diamond /Pearl
  • Lunar Knights
  • Animal Crossing: Wild World
  • Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
  • Hotel Dusk: Room 215

And thats just me getting started. I dont think ive actually found a single PSP game I really enjoy yet besides God of War and Lumines....a puzzle game.
