Music Songs you didn’t realise were dodgy…

I know it. They were performing minutes away from me just before Covid and I missed it. Black Baloon is another one of my favs from them.
Iris, Black Balloon and Slide were definitely the standouts from Dizzy Up The Girl, I liked All Eyes On Me too.

Shame you missed them but they'll be no doubt back soon enough!

They're on my bucket list. John is a New Yorker so they're always playing somewhere close by. One day.

She's got me dizzy
She sees me through to the end
She's got me in her hands
And there's no use in pretending

Christine, sixteen
Christine, sixteen

She drives me crazy
I want to give her what I've got
And she's hot every day and night
There is no doubt about it

I don't usually say things
Like this to girls your age
But when I saw you coming
Out of the school that day
That day I knew, I knew
I've got to have you, I've got to have you

She's been around
But she's young and clean
I've got to have her
Can't live without her, whoa no
Christine, sixteen
Christine, sixteen
Christine
(Christine)
Sixteen
(Sixteen)
Christine, yeah
(Yeah)

This was definitely on Epstein's playlist. :nervous:

This one's a banger but the term dominicker hen seemed a bit off when I first heard it. Turns out it was once used to describe mixed race women. The title could be controversial, too I suppose.

Way down in Virginia
Amongst the tall growin' sugar canes
Lived a simple man and a dominicker hen
And a rose of a different name.

Well, the first time I felt lightnin'
I was standing in the drizzlin' rain
With a tremblin' hand and a bottle of gin
And the rose of a different name

Well, the devil made me do it the first time
The second time I done it on my own
Lord put a handle on a simple headed man
And help me leave that black rose alone

When the devil made that woman
Lord he threw the pattern away
She were built for speed with the tools
You need to make a new fool every day

Way down deep and dirty
On the darker side of shame
I caught a cane cuttin' man and a bottle of gin
With a rose of a different name

The devil made me do it the first time
The second time I done it on my own
Lord put a handle on a simple headed man
And help me leave that black rose alone

The devil made me do it the first time
The second time I done it on my own
Lord, put a handle on a simple headed man
And help me leave that black rose alone

Also, Semi Charmed Kinda Life is a very upbeat anthem about drug addiction.

Green Day has several songs that folks miss the lyrics to because they’re to an upbeat sound or because they’re played fast…

Having a Blast - about suicide bombing
Longview - masturbation
Brat - hoping your parents die
Geek Stink Breath - Meth use
Coming Clean - Billie Joe touches on his bisexuality
King for a Day - a crossdresser forced into therapy by his father

Platypus is also about celebrating Tim Yohannan being diagnosed with cancer. He died a few months after Nimrod came out.

I heard you're sick, sucked on that cancer stick
A throbbing tumor and a radiation high
Shit out of luck and now your time is up
It brings me pleasure just to know you're going to die

Brutal.

Looks like they finally caved, but I definitely remember this being brought up before.
They weren’t pro-Nazi but the song was hugely insensitive and offensive to Jews. It was very controversial at the time as well. Their original record label dropped them because they wouldn’t drop the song. It led to accusations of them being fascist etc too. I doubt any mainstream band would try to release an song like that now.
Probably not but Slayer aren’t mainstream now, never mind back in 1986.

"Ha ha you're dead" is supposedly about him too. Quite the grudge they held against him. They were probably too big to play Gilman Street from the point they were banned anyway.
1) Oh I completely forgot that song existed.

2) You’re probably right about that. I guess it was just the principal of the thing for Billie Joe.

I think it's fair to say that a lot of musicians living the lives of rockstars, usually out of their minds and far away from what's socially acceptable would have a bunch of edgy/inappropriate/provocative/downright pathetic content in their discographies. I mean like for a lot of them that was pretty much their MO.

'Pumped up Kicks' by Foster the People is about a kid shooting up his school.

Robert's got a quick hand
He'll look around the room he won't tell you his plan
He's got a rolled cigarette
Hanging out his mouth, he's a cowboy kid

Yeah, he found a six shooter gun
In his dad's closet, in a box of fun things
And I don't even know what
But he's coming for you, yeah, he's coming for you

All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You better run, better run faster than my bullet
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You better run, better run faster than my bullet

Daddy works a long day
He's coming home late, yeah, he's coming home late
And he's bringing me a surprise
Cause dinner's in the kitchen and it's packed in ice

I've waited for a long time
Yeah, the slight of my hand is now a quick pull trigger
I reason with my cigarette
Then say your hair's on fire
You must have lost your wits, yeah

All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You better run, better run faster than my bullet
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You better run, better run faster than my bullet

GnR have a some homophobic music don't they?

Edit: Here it is, One is a Million from what used to the biggest band in America.

One, two, one, two, three, four
Guess I needed some time to get away
I needed some peace of mind
Some peace of mind that'll stay
So I thumbed it down to sixth in L.A.
Maybe a Greyhound could be my way
Police and niggers, that's right
Get outta my way
Don't need to buy none of your
Gold chains today
Now don't need no bracelets
Clamped in front of my back
Just need my ticket, 'til then
Won't you cut me some slack
You're one in a million
Yeah that's what you are
You're one in a million babe
You're a shooting star
Maybe some day we'll see you
Before you make us cry
You know we tried to reach you
But you were much to high
Much too high
Much too high
Much too high
Immigrants and faggots
They make no sense to me
They come to our country
And think they'll do as they please
Like start some mini-Iran
Or spread some fecking disease
And they talk so many goddamn ways
It's all Greek to me
Well some say I'm lazy
And others say that's just me
Some say I'm crazy
I guess I'll always be
But it's been such a long time
Since I knew right from wrong
It's all the means to and end and
I keep it moving along
Hey, hey, hey, yeah
You're one in a million
You're a shooting star
You're one in a million babe
You know that you are
Maybe someday we'll see you
Before you make us cry
You know we tried to reach you
But you were much too high
Much too high
Much too high
Much too high
Radicals and racists
Don't point your finger at me
I'm a small town white boy
Just tryin' to make ends meet
Don't need your religion
Don't watch that much TV
Just makin' my livin' baby
Well that's enough for me
You're one in a million
Yeah that's what you are
You're one in a million babe
You're a shooting star
Maybe some day we'll see you
Before you make us cry
You know we tried to reach you
But you were much too high
Much too high yeah, yeah, yeah
Much too high
Much too high
Much too high yeah, yeah, yeah
Much too high
Much too high
Much too high
Much too high
Much too high
Much too high

I remember an interview with the band Living Colour where they were playing on the same bill and asked Axl not to play that song.

However they played it a couple of times out of spite. Never understood how they were given a pass for that in their heyday

Yep. It’s actually in a playlist that I play during class while kids are doing school work. I tell them I know what it’s about, but the song is great so I play it.

Jon B has a song with 2Pac called ‘Are You Still Down’ from the 90s. Recently I clocked the line where he sings ‘I remember you were too afraid to go all the way. But you did it to please me, crying as you gave it to me’. Thought ‘hmm, but dodgy that’, coming to think of it.

New to the game, eh?

Always thought it was about parenthood and watching children grow up.

And to be honest I still think that. Yeah, "every smile you fake" sounds ominous but my interpretation is its about kids learning to lie to the parents.

But the last line seals it, "every claim you stake" whats that got to do with stalking

Every breath you take
And every move you make
Every bond you break
Every step you take
I'll be watching you
Every single day
And every word you say
Every game you play
Every night you stay
I'll be watching you

[Chorus]
Oh, can't you see you belong to me?
How my poor heart aches
With every step you take?

I'd say its meaning was fairly obvious from the very beginning.

I meant I wasn't sure if they were serious that the meaning of that song wasn't known by everyone. The lyrics are fairly explicit and hugely publicised and discussed at the time.

I suppose younger audiences may have only heard it occasionally and not really listened to the lyrics.

And not dodgy in that it was lamenting the pointlessness of her actions. That said Grldof did later say he regretted that writing the song made the murderer more infamous.

I’m always amazed that Britney Spears’ ‘Baby One More Time’ doesn’t get mentioned on this topic…

Lyrically it appears to be sung from the point of view of a domestic violence victim who keeps going back to an abuser. It sexualises a woman asking to be hit ffs.

You can't be serious about this?

Ah, they didn't say that, although it's impled by the thread title. Anyway. Understandable confusion. As you were.

Not sure if serious or not as It has a dodgy underage schoolgirl vibe but I'm fairly sure itvisn't anything to do with domestic violence.

Billy Ocean Hey you get into my car
Get in the backseat baby
A lot of people didn't get it and was played over and over again and sang quite openly. U,S number one too. Probably in top 100 driving songs.

Tonight’s the night, Rod Stewart

“Don’t say a word, my virgin child, just let your inhibitions run wild”

I would have to say no one touches the Stones when it comes to taboo lyrics. Not even Led Zeppelin who had their share. Star Star by the Stones still hasn’t been played on terrestrial radio I believe since the lyrics are so obscene. But to me that’s why they are one of the top 3 bands of all time.
Of course I’m not counting rap with all of the cursing and gun and drug references. Just rock bands.

Summer of 69 by Bryan Adams was not actually about the year 1969 which we should have known as he would have been too young then to do all the things he was talking about
