Music Songs you didn’t realise were dodgy…

I think you know thats dodgy straight off. Love the live version with Metallica.
Not really, my friend told me it was about not caring after a relationship break down but when I listened to it it goes on about sucking an old mans cock. I was appalled. Haven’t heard Metallica’s version though, didn’t realise they’d covered it!

Closer - Nine Inch Nails
Misinterpreted and I don't see anything wrong with the lyrics when it's taken in the right context. :wenger:

I bring you, Brown Sugar by the Rolling Stones…

Fecking hell. I always thought it was about heroin :(
If you think that’s being bad boys from the Stones try Stray Cat Blues
The line about 15 yrs old was changed to 13 on the live Get Yer Ya Yas Out
Lyrics:
I hear the click-clack of your feet on the stairs
I know you're no scare-eyed honey.
There'll be a feast if you just come upstairs
But it's no hanging matter
It's no capital crime
I can see that you're fifteen years old
No I don't want your I.D.
And I can see that you're so far from home
But it's no hanging matter
It's no capital crime
Oh yeah, you're a strange stray cat
Oh yeah, don'tcha scratch like that
Oh yeah, you're a strange stray cat
I bet, bet your mama don't know you scream like that
I bet your mother don't know you can spit like that.
You look so weird and you're so far from home
But you don't really miss your mother
Don't look so scared I'm no mad-brained bear
But it's no hanging matter
It's no capital crime
Oh, yeah
Woo!

Well, in the current political climate ( :) ) there's a slight issue with those particular bits — and I can't say that I'm not on the side of those who does see this is problematic. The whole song is written in the premise of romantic courtship being equalled to a struggle between the hunter & the hunted (the literal names of those two voices are "Wolf" for a man and "Mouse" for a woman by the way) is very much outdated today and, might I add, for a good reason.

Again, it's unfair to accuse this song of being intentionally rapey etc. as it wasn't — at the time when it was written it was an acceptable or even an encouraged way of proclaiming your affection towards someone. But today it isn't, so the whole concept of this song became problematic — and there's no real coming back from that.

(I ought to say no, no, no, sir) Mind if I move in closer
(At least I’m gonna say that I tried) What’s the sense of hurting my pride
(I really can’t stay) Baby, don’t hold out
[Both] Oh, but it’s cold outside

(I simply must go) Baby, it’s cold outside
(The answer is no) Baby, it’s cold outside
(The welcome has been) How lucky that you dropped in
(So nice and warm) Look out the window at that storm….
It’s actually much less dodgy than it sounds due to it being tongue in cheek, and hence doesn’t fit in this thread.

Worth noting that Marsha Hunt and Claudia Lennear both claim to be the inspiration for Brown Sugar, as they both dated Mick Jagger around the time that he wrote it.

I’m always amazed that Britney Spears’ ‘Baby One More Time’ doesn’t get mentioned on this topic…

Lyrically it appears to be sung from the point of view of a domestic violence victim who keeps going back to an abuser. It sexualises a woman asking to be hit ffs.

Not really dodgy, unless you're of a particularly religious persuasion, but I only realised what Like A Prayer was about when listening to it on the radio a couple of years ago.

or "Hear him whip the women just around midnight" :nervous:
The historical imagery in the song is actually really really accurate. When I teach my Civil War course, I teach about a former Governor of South Carolina that bought young slave girls so he could rape them and enslave their children, so he increased his profits… and per his wife’s diary, she knew about it but knew she had no power to stop it.

I honestly never listened to the lyrics and I don’t think I’ve ever heard it outside the video which was usually uhm.. muted.

Have we mentioned Slide by the Goo Goo Dolls yet? Lots of folks miss that it’s about an abortion.

Don't you love the life you killed?
The priest is on the phone
Your father hit the wall
Your ma' disowned you
Don't suppose I'll ever know
What it means to be a man
It's something I can't change
I'll live around it

Please don't tell me that "Iris" is controversial too. It's actually my ultimate favorite song.

It was pretty controversial right when it came out and religious people took it offensively, nothing really secretive about it.

Push - Matchbox 20

Some thought it was promoting domestic violence.

I wanna push you around, I will, I will
I wanna push you down, I will, I will
I wanna take you for granted, I wanna take you for granted

Those were some very dark days. I can't begin to imagine what people went through.

Also, Semi Charmed Kinda Life is a very upbeat anthem about drug addiction.

Green Day has several songs that folks miss the lyrics to because they’re to an upbeat sound or because they’re played fast…

Having a Blast - about suicide bombing
Longview - masturbation
Brat - hoping your parents die
Geek Stink Breath - Meth use
Coming Clean - Billie Joe touches on his bisexuality
King for a Day - a crossdresser forced into therapy by his father

City of Angels? Really? It always annoyed me that the film was unworthy of the song...
I like the movie because of the song probably. Some powerful lyrics in that song.
Instant goosebumps.

And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

Like a virgin is actually about her encounter with a guy that can dig tunnels without any external equipment.

Used to have a friend a few years ago and she always 'got going' by the song...

It's an all-time classic, especially the album edit with the additional strings. There's an awesome live version in a downpour on YouTube.

Lucky you ;)

I know it. They were performing minutes away from me just before Covid and I missed it. Black Baloon is another one of my favs from them.
