Ah, so he would still have another Asian Cup to win. Problem is that one is much more difficult because all teams are playing their best teams and Korea have 3-4 other teams close to their level.
Asian games are every 4 years, Asian Cup doesn't get an exemption as its football only.

Olympic Medal or Gold in Asian games only exemptions, they did one for the WC QF but the backlash from other sports means they wont do that again.

Don't think the Asian Cup is allowed anymore as it's only football specific. Some people questioned why football players had so many chances to get exemptions so only the Asian Games and Olympics games is allowed for exemption from National Service as it's available for all athletes.

Okay, I see. I remember they got exemptions for fourth place at the World Cup. Did not realize this was met with criticism by the public, thought they were national heroes after that.

So it’s this one or never for him as the next Olympics come after he turns 30.

Yep, pretty much. Potentially an exemption may be made for a 2nd place finish here but unlikely. There has been quite a backlash against K pop stars and sportsmen of different kinds who have found ways around doing the service, even when they wanted to do it later.

Its a bit baffling, there are so many Asian tourists who attend our home games now just to get a glimpse of Son. Would be strange if he ends up in a barracks for the next couple of years. And (I'd have to check this) apparently he may not even be able to have it a bit easier and play for one of the army teams in the South Korean top flight as he didn't finish high school or something?

A lot of pressure on Son's personal life for this game!

S. Korea 1 - Japan 0 in ET. Son with the assist.

Still 8 mins left on the 1st half of ET, with the 2nd half to come.
