What if he refuse? He’s rich enough to live abroad «forever»..
He won't be getting back to Korea. He is definitely rich enough but it's still a big decision to get yourself banned from your home country for life. Plus I think that it'll seriously damage his image, as far as I understand it's considered every man's duty to serve there.

Such a pathetic rule.. he shouldn’t have to feck off his career - I’d just never go back if I was him.

How far do S Korea have to go in the world cup for him to be exempt?

There isn't a rule about the World Cup (unlike the rules about the Olympics and Asian games), but their entire team got off when they got 4th in 2002.

30 league goals in 99 games doesn't quite match your math.

He scores loads in the cups aswell, hit 20 + last two seasons I think.

Excellent player but didn't realise how soon the national service stuff was, like a few thought he might be allowed to do it in his 30s once his top level career was over and he maybe moved back to play in the K League.

Very interesting read that.

Don't think he is good enough.

Would he be the first Korean player to play for us?

The hell, man. How come you mixed up PJS and Kagawa?

Is there beef between Korea and Japan?

Definitely. Mostly Korean anger toward the Japanese for what the Japanese did during WWII (very legitimate anger, too).

Really I was laughing because older Asian people (2 generations ago and further) have serious racism/elitism toward other Asians - my grandma flipped out once because someone asked if she was Filippino. I'm not here to condone racist behavior, just had a striking image of my great grandmother blowing a gasket.

Never heard of beef between Asian countries, I always thought they were quite amicable with each other with exception of China and Japan.

Btw I only learnt that from watching Bruce Lee films.

Basically Japanese were pretty bad pre and during WW2 all over Asia.

Japan appear to have a tainted past but I liked their samurai warriors who came across as disciplined and fearless.

Nope, we hate each others guts, even the smaller countries have beef with virtually everyone around them

Believe it or not except for Chinese and Koreans, Japan is well liked universally probably because of the techs they provided for years.

Lol read some stuff man. The world is the same as much as they are different

He's a good player who has improved over the last 3 seasons but he plays off the left so wouldn't make any sense at United.

I remember that in the book Shogun, the Japanese were rude toward Koreans, calling them dog eaters and saying that smelled like garlic.:)

I'd swap Aldy & Son for Tony, as much as I love him, might be too good too pass up on. Son would quite easily play on the right, not moan and give his all every game. Aldy would give that needed leadership.

Look at it this way, a bench player (sad but true) for 2 starters that would significantly improve us? Deal.

Oh there's definitely beef. It's died down a lot with the younger generation, but politicians like to stir up anti-japanese sentiment every now and then to score brownie points with the populace. It's mostly Koreans who have a deeper dislike than vice-versa. Seems like Japanese people are totally fine and cool with Koreans and are very accepting of them, while we Koreans have a serious inferiority complex with all the admiration and attention Japan gets from the world.

Inferiority complex is a stretch. Very long one.

That's a romantic modern viewpoint. Like knights in Europe the reality would have been more vicious and authoritarian. You don't maintain a military social class for altruistic reasons.

Son could ask to delay his military service. For me, he deserves it, he has potential to become a good player.

Apparently they're not very flexible.
Really South Korea needs to do something for football players, they really are starting to become good and would only fully develop if they can be in the European leagues. Hopefully that stupid war somehow stops.
