I think the Italian press are reporting this as much closer than it is. English press don't appear to be paying it much attention and the club clearly need to secure a striker first.

Striker and Amrabat are not related. We need both anyway so must buy both, the order doesn’t matter

How have we got to page 37, and it hasn't been fervently discussed that we shouldn't sign him....based on the fact he'll miss a month every other year at the AFCON!

That's him and Onana almost £75m worth of signings gone mid-season. We should just keep McFred :nervous:

Onana quit the national team, and Amrabat as a partial backup wouldnt be less problematic to miss for a month

It absolutely does when we have a limited budget. Do you think we'll prioritise signing another midfielder with the risk of not raising funds via sales to secure a striker?

Another stats warrior who doesn’t watch football games

Out of curiosity I checked for us. Of the players who had 20+ appearances, Varane was the lowest rated player on whoscored. Maybe we should sell him!

If we sell McFred as is mooted. We will have gone from the following midfield in 21/22:

Matic (over the hill)
McTominay
Fred
Pogba (injured all year)
Lingard (Beans)
Fernandes (lone bright spark)
Van der Beek (MIA)

to this midfield this season:

Casemiro
Mount
Fernandes
Eriksen
Amrabat
Mainoo

That’s a fecking remarkable turnaround in 18 months. The difference in quality and balance is just remarkable. It would genuinely be a case of not worrying if any of our midfield options were starting. No huge drop off in quality when rotation or injury occurs. This would be exciting.

Yeah it’s remarkable what ETH, Mourtough and Hargreaves have done over an 18 month period with incomings and outgoings and we’re now getting ripped off every signing because of being United.

I do think that only one of McTominay or Fred will go but having Casemiro, Fernandes and Mount as the main trio then Eriksen, Amrabat and Mainoo as the back up and then McTominay or Fred as worst case scenario is a hell of an upgrade from where we were.

Strangely this has got me excited more than Mount and Onana

Only watched him in the world cup and he was absolutely brilliant. Any resident Morocco or Fiorentina fans here whom can share more about the player? I presume he’s going to come in as a first team player and play with Casemiro in midfield

Do you think there‘s a possibility him and Casemiro could be paired together in those big games against tough, high quality central midfields? At the moment, it feels like just Casemiro in those games may not be enough.

Casemiro and Amrabat as a two, with Bruno the attacking centre mid and Mount put out wide for example?

Agree, don't see him exclusively as a backup to Casemiro.

I'm worried that he will have difficulties adapting to the high tempo of the PL. He seems most comfortable when he is not aggressively pressed (as do most players) and his technique can be a bit suspect at times.

Still, for 20ish mil he should be a decent rotation option.

Nah he's experienced enough, he'll be fine. A great addition to the team.

Not at all. Under any circumstances United will buy a striker, limited budget or not. So the more non-strikers ETH buys before that, the better.

I’ll be happy if we sign him but still don’t see how we’re signing him before a ST.

We don't need amrabat. We only need him if we sell 3 of the current midfielders in our squad. Hell, we could sell 2 midfielders and be perfectly fine into next season and have the backup trio in midfield of McTominay, Mainoo and Eriksen.

The sales are related to funding for a CF - while after that then we work on funding for midfield but also opening up room for a squad midfielder.

He'd be a squad player at best. He's good, but if all are fit and fresh, he is on the bench behind Mount, Bruno and Casemiro. There's 0 doubt there. Of course he'll get plenty of games, but he would be competing with Eriksen as the 1st guy off the bench, dependent on game state if we need more solidity or more creative passing.

One of fiorentina's best players last season, who did the busquetes role of breaking up play and pass, pass, pass. Will be a great signing for us.

"..Amrabat is a high-volume passer within the Fiorentina system and he does so with a high degree of accuracy.

Amrabat is regularly involved in Fiorentina’s circulation of possession, as well as having a very high overall progressive passing distance. He understands how to dictate the tempo of a game whilst possessing the ability to break the lines.

Ranking in the 94th percentile for touches in the middle third in Europe’s top 5 leagues, Amrabat is the hub of what La Viola do with the ball and ultimately makes this possession-centric system work. The Moroccan also specialises in medium and long-range passing. This allows him to diversify his style of ball movement.

Statistically, Amrabat is genuinely one of the best distance passers in Europe, both in volume and accuracy. He’s adept at sitting deep and spraying passes all over the pitch whilst also providing the defensive reliability required of a deep-lying midfielder.

He is very capable as a passer in advanced positions, especially as Fiorentina retain possession at such a high rate and enjoy sustained possession in opposition territory. He’s then able to use his tremendous vision and high-quality technique to exploit passing lanes and deliver excellent progressive and penetrative passes and crosses from the half-spaces.

Amrabat’s value goes beyond just his passing. The Morocco international is also a strong ball carrier, using powerful runs and close control to evade pressure. Standing at a reported 1.85m tall, he possesses both the size and strong frame to win duels regularly and cover plenty of ground with the ball..."

We need genuine competition for Casemiro and someone who could play with him in a two to give EtH better tactical options. We do need a striker more urgently though, I agree with that.
