Not much has gone wrong. He wasnt very good for Fiorentina either.

However if you want to hyperanalyze his one or two hyperfocused stats that posters were using to suggest hes good have gone down. So the one area you could point to and say he should improve that, he has had a hard time maintaining what he did at Fiorentina. That was in the passing breakdown where the numbers said he was good at making progressive forward passes iirc. And now its more average

Obviously changing leagues, clubs and tactics are likely contributing factors. But signing for an expensive loan with a buy option and not being particularly young meant that he was going to have to deliver in his first season. Theres plenty of matches left this season so he could do better but I think if anyone was ever expecting him to be more than a 6.5/10 midfielder for us - close but not quite a solid option with vastly better options to improve on him out there, then said person didnt know what they were talking about.

We just came back from an away trip to Turkey, and the traveling arrangement to Newcastle was far from ideal, leaving us with less time for recovery.

McTominay had 91.7% passing completion against Newcastle. Showing for pass is a different issue with McTominay. Issue with Amrabat is he is a on ball player as much as he's an off ball player. He wants to get on ball, and under pressure he made mistake on ball. Stronger than someone else in our squad means jack all when Joeliton is a physical beast that mostly goes unmatched against most opposition. And Newcastle as a whole is a harder working team. One extra hard working player can't carry the same slackers. Amrabat style may look more physical equipped, but he's not that strong as seen in previous PL games.

Unless the Martial, Rashford significantly played better, there was no one quick change of players could have helped that team. Prevented a couple shots, but highly unlikely to change the flow of the game nor result for the better.

Yeah like I say, overthinking it. It's not a difficult concept.

If you're playing a very physical team and can't beat them with technique(which we can't) you get your bigger guys in there.

You might still lose as you say but you go in with the right intention. Varane, Hojlund and Amrabat should have all started. That would have been a tougher game for Newcastle.

You're a bit seletive there with McTominays passing stat. You left out the bit where he only made 24 passes all game. His completion rate becomes almost irrelevant at that point.

He's just not been given a chance yet. Not a proper one anyway. Bits of games here and there.

You could argue the manager watches him train, knows more than us. But then you look at the mess our midfield is and as a fan probably have a right to question Amrabat not playing.
 
Peak Fred performance today. 10 mind of chaos and 80 minutes of defensive masterclass. It seemed that he interrupted every god damn ball.
 
Thought he was great tonight. My motm.

Tonight was what I thought he’d bring to us, hopefully builds on it.
 
That was more like it. He's got good attributes but so far he seemed like he was chasing the game. Today he was on point and imposed himself on the midfield. Tougher tests to come, let's see what he's made of.
 
I like Amrabat because he's an actual midfielder.

Now, he's not a very good midfielder. But still. He at least midfields quite a bit. Does all those midfieldy things that most of our players, even the nominal midfielders, don't do. He doesn't often do them very well but at least he does them. If we had this type of player but, you know, better, we'd be a much-improved team.
 
First half I thought he was a bit shaky but he didn’t half come into the game. Was immense in the second, great performance.
 
He started off terribly and I thought I’d made my mind up on him but he was excellent in that second half.
 
Now give him a run of games.

The only player we have with the discipline and willingness to play as a 6. That alone should have him starting.
 
Brilliant tonight against two of the most highly rated midfielders in the world. Came into his own tonight. Long may it continue.
 
Aside from that horrendous pass which played them in, solid and I like that he gets when to just take player out/grab a shirt as well. Is a limited but good option for DM over Case i feel.
 
Still want to see him beside Mainoo. Might get the most out of him.
 
Played well, but like McTominay's performance it was against an awful chelsea that seemed to have more issues in their midfield than ours. Let's see how Saturday goes
 
Best he's played for us, really wish we'd give him some support in there though.
 
Very good tonight. Got caught out of position once or twice early on but sniffed out a load of Chelsea build up and kept it neat and tidy. Did good things like leaning on opponents when he knew he couldn’t win the ball to at least slow them or knock their balance. Hope he can play like this more often.
 
excellent. if mctominay hadnt scored twice he was our man of the match. Settled now perhaps. Was also one of our better players in turkey.
 
He's an absolute tank, it feels like when he gets pressured, players bounce off him and doesn't affect his touch. Needs to use the ball better, but really enjoyed that.
 
Really good performance. Kept it nice and simple, and won the ball back plenty of times. More like that please.
 
Position wise he was almost perfect. Good anticipation and decent use of the ball tonight.
