Sneijder to Galatasaray?

I think the time to sign Sneijder passed 18 months ago. If ever we were going to get him then Summer 2011 would have been it.

You know I was firmly against the signing of Sneijder 18 months ago. But if he was happy to take a pay cut and not expect to be an automatic first team starter every week then I wouldn't mind him at £8m on a 2-3 year contract with an extension possible.

He's 28 y.o. Why would he be happy as a non starter, while also taking a massive pay cut?

Is the same journalist who said he is nailed on to come to United 18 months ago? Wouldn't believe these so called journalists who have close ties with the players' party. Just trying to sell their stories. The problem with joining anyone from 1st-10th in the PL is that only four or maybe five teams can actually afford his wages and none of them seem too keen to sign him at the moment.

The point he was making in the interview was that he has made an awful lot of money already and money isn't the only thing he's bothered about. If that were the case the deal to Turkey could be done and dusted. He could also probably have moved to Russia or somewhere similar for a huge payday.

If he costs £8 million then a few clubs might be preapred to push the boat out - for me Tottenham is the main possibility.

Fact is he's only 28 and only two years ago was touted as one of the best players in the world. Given that, someone may be willing to take a punt.

The journo pointed out that most business in teh PL is done at the last minute, so he's holding off making a decision.

If he's not then he doesn't need to come simple. It's not as if we wouldn't be able to give him enough games. Besides which the article says he is desperate to play in the PL. well if he's that desperate then surely he'd want to join the greatest PL team.

I'm not too fussed either way. Like I said, I was against his signing 18 months ago because I wasn't too keen on us spending £30m on this guy plus I thought it would halt the development of Pogba and Morrison (more fool me). But at £8m I wouldn't mind now.

Why would he be happy? I was just offering a suggestion on United's side, if that's unacceptable to him then that's fine. It's not as I decide the terms of any transfers, was just stating what would be good for us. I can't say what's good for Sneijder or not, that's his problem not mine. But if he doesn't want to take a pay cut then he s off to Turkey. If he doesn't want to go to Turkey then he's just going to rot at Inter and not play. So to me it would make sense to bite his tongue and take a pay cut if he wants the premier league.

Is he the sort of player who could adapt his game to sit further back and become a deeper CM or are his attributes very suited to only the attacking sense of his game? Wondered that, if we tailored him slighly to a Carrick mould player then for 8 million could well be worth a punt especially if he is saying about wanting to get more than money, I.E trophies etc

I don't think he'd be able to adapt to the Carrick mould, but from what I've "heard" about him I think he'd possibly be able to play the Scholes role from deep. He's a great passer of the ball.

Why do Inter want to rid of him again? He was their best player a couple years back.

They're stupid, it's all about money. They give him a contract to sign, then a couple years later want to go back on their contract and give him a pay cut. And they're the ones stupidly not playing him whilst still paying him. It makes no sense to just freeze him out like this.

For 8 million he's definitely worth it IMO. I think going to Man Utd could somewhat rejuvinate him too. I think he could fit in nicely in CM role if he wants to play there. We've already got Rooney and Kagawa for AMC.

That's the debate. If he could adapt to CM then it would be a great buy, but it's not a clear cut thing and a bit of a gamble.

Even if he managed to it wouldn't get around the issue of our over-reliance on Carrick. Sneijder might be able to replace Cleverley as the more advanced CM but he couldn't fill in for Carrick as the holder. Nowhere near good enough defensively IMO.

Sorry for the bump but can some one explain me what this means:

"It is believed that, as part of the deal struck between Galatasaray and Inter, a €5 million penalty clause would come into effect if Sneijder signed for a different club during the January window."

Inter will play Gala €5m if he signs for another club? Why would they do that?

I guess Gala agreed a deal that was a little more expensive for themselves but secured them their exclusive rights to sign him with no competition meaning that he couldn't play them off against someone else for a better deal. Take it or leave it and wait til the summer.

With him and Lampard in addition to Scholes and Giggs we could be the new Milan. Bring back Becks I say.

I really have to laugh at the lads on here who wouldn't take Sneijder on a cut price deal.
At 28 he's at his footballing peak and still has a good few years left in the tank.
He's is the outstandingly obvious choice to replace Scholes. Deep lying playmaker/CM/AM, he is proficient in any of the above. He is unmarkable, drifts into dangerous positions, absurdly good passing, not a bad finisher, good long shot, arrives late in the box, uses his technique/passing and footballing brain to run the midfield/control the game. Sneijder excels at all of those things.
On his day, he is basically a 28yr old Scholes.

I woudn't give a flying feck what his wages were, for a cut-price transfer fee, I'd snap him up immediately. If he goes to another team in the premiership, I seriously think we'll end up regretting it.

At a cut-price I'd definitely snap him up. But I still think he's a fairly risky purchase simply because he hasn't been at his best for a while and he is a fairly inconsistent performer (at least to me he is). He was underwhelming at Madrid and since Inter's CL victory he's had injury troubles.

All that said, I'd still take him without hesitation. His upside is worth the risk. If he could play a deeper role where Scholes does and is effective at it as he is further up the pitch then we've got a hell of a player on our hands. Put him in there with Ando, Cleverley and Carrick and we've got top notch midfield.

Dude, you are way out overrating him. "His" day last happened almost 2 years back, and even then, he wasn't a Scholes.

Maybe I am, but then Sneijder has hardly been good for the majority of the past 2 years to be actually convinced that we should take a gamble on him.

Hes Liverpool bound according to all the dirties on my Facebook. They're all wanking each other off, so they say, hes in Liverpool holding talks. Believe it when I see it! Hope its bollocks, but these are regular match goers, all of them tossing each other off.

They were paying 100k/week to Sahin, so they could afford his wages.
Might happen...

Amongst folk I know, who are into football a lot of them still think Sneijder is one of the best players in the world. I mean, the same Sneijder who has done almost nothing in 2 and a half years. Then again these people think United should get rid of Carrick because he doesn't pass the ball forward enough :wenger:

I can picture him in a Liverpool shirt way more than I ever pictured him in a United shirt. Seems more natural.

We don't need him.

Means ziltch that does, I learnt that from a Sneijder thread a long time ago.

I was going to say the same, we pretty much had him on a plane with his agent at Old Trafford according to strong rumours which seemed legit and nearly 3 years down the line he is still at Inter.

The funny thing is that people at the time were saying that he was too old for us at 26.

Trading an on loan Sahin and Joe Cole for Sneijder on the wage bill would be a fantastic piece of business to be fair. Sneijder is exactly what Liverpool need.

He had a good case for winning a Balon D'or at his peak and but for Messi he would have. There's never been a time when Scholes deserved to win a Balon D'or or even came close to it.

You're way underrating Sneijder at his best.

To be fair to Liverpool, the following isn't a bad spine:

Suarez

Sneijder

Lucas - Gerrard

Agger Skrtel

Reina
