Manchester United are ready to table a fresh £40m bid for Inter Milan midfielder Wesley Sneijder when the transfer window re-opens, according to the Daily Star.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was left stunned following their 6-1 defeat at home to Manchester City and the Scotsman is ready to act quickly and break the bank for the Dutchman. Sneijder has been a long-term target of the Premier League champions all summer and now, Ferguson is ready to pay whatever the cost to bring Sneijder to Old Trafford.

Sneijder’s asking price had proved a stumbling block in the past, as had the £200,000 a week wages the Dutch international pockets at Inter Milan. Sneijder recently spoke of his affection for United and claimed that he was open to a move when the timing is right.

United are looking for a midfield playmaker that can provide a cutting edge to their attacking play following the retirement of Paul Scholes in the summer. Sneijder has been identified as their number one target and the transfer could be possible this January.

Does this really need a new thread? It's the same old rubbish, brought back around by a shit performance on Sunday

I agree.... but there is no old thread :P This'll be gone soon aswell no doubt.

Excellent, after Sunday's result, I knew it wouldn't be long before the papers mentioned Sneijder.

There is no chance of us signing Sneijder in January and I would think our chances of signing him at all are limited at this point, and I was really freaking confident he would sign in the Summer.

He will be six months older and CL cup tied in January. A year older in the following summer - unless the fee involved and, more importantly, wages drop very significantly I can't see United going in for him again.

Certainly not a January target - we'll be looking for players able to play in the CL, if we are looking for anyone at all.

The time for us signing Sneijder has passed

Lock thread

I like how people think he is not what we need right now, who exactly do we need right now? because we sure need a midfielder- not just as a result of Sundays debacle but ever since Scholes retired we simply do need have a world class CM and teams who do have will find it easier to walk through our midfield than it should be.

Where was this 'story' when we were steamrolling all before us at the start of the season?

We've suffered our first defeat, a heavy one at that to our local rivals, and suddenly the Sneijder 'stories' are doing the rounds again

The concern with our midfield is how it gets overrun against quality opposition. Sneijder behind rooney will worsen it rather than solve the problem because sneijder will not help the CMs as much as ronney does. What we need are midfielders who can tighten things for us and not let any half decent opposition midfield totally pass by us. Sneijder doesnt provide that.

He is cup tied , so he is no use in the CL.
FFS we have a bad result and people are screaming to spend £40 mil on a player , who yes is good , but I have my doubts if he is the sort of player we need.

Starting threads based on stories from the Star should be a banning offence.

Hope we get him in for saturday. Everton's a tough place to go and if we need a 4th goal this year then who better to create it other than Wesley himself...

Fergie pointed out the weekends problem but absolutely nobody on cafe has taken any notice. Wing backs both bombing forward at the same time leaving huge gaping holes behind them. Senior players not doing their job.
We weren't exposed in the middle, we were exposed around central mid.
We have a world class cm in the making if we are patient. Cleverely has already shown what he can become. A massive amount of money on sneijder is just a knee jerk reaction.

Fergie has to take his fair share of the blame for this imo. Yes he is a brilliant manager before anybody starts, but he is also very stubborn and arrogant at times. We have all watched our defence getting progressively worse over the last few weeks, and he has done absolutely nothing to address it.

On top of that, for possibly the biggest derby game ever, he picks a midfield which offers absolutely no protection for the defence whatsoever. Anybody who looked at our line up before that game must have been at least a little surprised, that he showed City such disrespect.

We have been exposed in the centre of midfield on many an occasion yet he has done little to address that either. We have needed a DM since Keane retired, which is why we bought Hargreaves. We may not have had much use out of him, but the need for a player like him is now more evident than ever.

People shouting for Sneijder must be smoking some strong shit imo. How would Sneijder have coped in a 2 man midfield against City or Barca? No better than anybody else i would suggest.

A player like him always plays with at least one recognised DM or holding player, for him to be able to do what he does to the greatest effect. Since we do not have a DM who Fergie trusts for big games, what would be the point of signing him? We would still have exactly the same problem, and Sneijder would be forced to operate in areas where his talent would be completely wasted.

We already have TC and Ando who have shown the way offensively in the middle. All we need now is a specialised DM with more combative qualities than what we have now, to give the defence the protection it needs while we are attacking. It really is that simple.

I'm over Wesley. Moved on. That ship has sailed. Bring on Javi Martinez, Banega, Schweini, etc.
