Smashley Young

I remember Martin O'Neill called him 'world class'.

'Genius'.

This Young stuff needs to stop. I feel bad laying into a United player so often, but playing him basically kills any threat on the left hand side. It means because of our problems between linking midfield and attack that we repeatedly lump it to Valencia who is also in bad form (though not as unlikely to do something as Young).

What happened to this lad...he was quite good...

Why don't see any of that skill, dribbling, pace etc anymore? Surely its a mentality thing?

He wasnt bought to be first choice, the nani saga has basically forced our hand. If we're not going to play Nani, we MUST go out and get a winger in Jan. He's been very average for a considerable time now. Offers nothing to justify being 1st choice at a club like United.

He's like Valencia in the way he's so predictable. The defender knows he's not gonna try to beat and that he will always cut inside.Needs more variety, more feints

Whatever the case, we got absolutely mugged at 17m with one year on his contract. Last year he put in two big performances. I think that he got half of his goals and assists for the season in those two games too. I don't know, he just doesn't inspire at all, that said, I still don't think that I have got over his performances at the Euros.

We'd never have paid anywhere close to the figure had he not been English which makes it worse. RVP at just 7mil more when both had similar contract situation tells you everything really.

I had little issue with him today really. It's the midfield hat made me want to pull my hair out.

Our midfield wasnt great but its not responsible for our wingers being unable to beat their men or put in a decent cross all game. Scholes didnt have a good game but got the ball out to our wingers plenty of times. They did feckall with it though.

In his defense, I feel like he is holding back a little for some reason. My guess is that the coaching staff has directed him not to be too adventurous as he needs to cover for Evra. He hasn't provided much attacking threat in the last two games but the left side, which was an achilles heel last season, has been more secure.

Or may be he is more cautious after spending some time in the IR. He does have the ability to take players on but ain't doing it since the comeback from injury.

Young is a good player, works his bollocks off and normally produces going forward, ideally Nani would be on the left but that boat seems to have sailed. I had doubts about Young last year but he won me over and I'm sticking with him. He's just back from injury, give him time.

He hasn't had a proper run of games since he got back from injury. That video above shows exactly what he's capable of. He just needs to express himself more and his natural ability will return. I expect to see him take people on, mix things up and be effective.

I thought he was slightly hard done by, and if I were to haul one player off the pitch it would be Scholes.

Having said that, you expect more from the amount of touches he got on the ball today. It might be okay to go into hiding when playing for Villa, but when you play as one of the front four at United you need to show some bollocks. See Hernandez for the right way to do it.

3rd game back since injury? Still looking rusty as hell. Nothing really positive to say other than, with the added match practice and fitness....he has to play better than this.

To be fair, he just returned from injury. On a more frightening note, anyone else feel like for certain patches Young was playing like Downing yesterday?

They're like Yin and Yang or something. Young cuts inside a lot whilst Valencia goes down the byline, and both look quite handy when they occasionally do the opposite thing. They're sort of like contrary players in the former sense but at the same time there are similarities and, just as the concept of dark gives rise to that of light, the shitness of Young gives rise to the constant possession of the ball that Valencia seems to have (due to players not seeing Young as a sufficient attacking threat in contrast to Valencia, and because Young cuts inside and gives it to someone to spread the play out to the other side), which in turn leads to the majority our successful attacks.

Bit harsh on Young again (I don't actually think he's shit) but, yeah...Ying and Yangtonio - intertwined, interconnected players integral to the current success of United. Fergie Shui.

He looks lost at times with the ball at his feet and offer little when it comes to attacking. Match sharpness could be a factor as he just came back from his injury

When is the last time he actually ran with the ball? Welbeck is miles better player than Young is, its ridiculous to leave Welbeck on the bench and play young instead.

I really don't understand Fergie's, how many shit games some players needs to have to end up on the bench?

he is fast turning into a defensive minded left winger. when he get the ball, he will run with it for 10 yards, and then a defender came and try to close him down. young will then break, look to his back and then will either pass the ball to evra or someone in the center circle. he doesn't even have the courage or confidence to take on defenders these days.

Thing is in terms of end product he does the job, his stats pretty much mirror Nani and Valencia last season, although the former wasn't at his best and Valencia only really kicked on after xmas. But I just don't think he provides enough of a real threat. He is a good player and being that and playing for united where we give the wingers the ball again and again they will still get the assists over a season but I just don't think he does enough in matches despite being great defensively.

To be honest once Kagawa is back I'm sure he'll slot in on the left not to mention increased competition from Welbeck and Hernandez. Then if Nani does stay and finds his form you'd think Young would be down the pecking order. He's still a good player to have, particularly cause of his defensive strength but if others find their form and stay fit I don't think he'll get a big number of games.

he's an awful player. I would sell him - getting anythign above 10m would be good business. He is truly a limited player.

17m on him but not on a midfielder shows Fergie love for wingers.

Well I don't agree with that. Welbeck looks like Bambi on ice with the ball. Especially on the wing he more often than not looks lost.
We really have a lack of options on the wings atm.

We really should play the diamond more often.

Nani out injured.
Valencia off form.
Young is rubbish.
Welbeck is a striker playing out wide.

Yet we cant help playing wingers even if it means Rooney out wide.

I'd say its one of Fergie's worst signings. I honestly don't know why we bought him. Surely if we were wanting depth and a squad player, someone cheaper than £17m would have been a better idea.

Sometimes he does look like that, but you would expect that from a player who isn't regular starter. Once he gets run of two or three games as a starter, he will prove his class.

I know he works hard defensively but first and foremost he is supposed to be one of our 4 primary attackers when he plays as in 4-4-2 our 2 tend to stay pretty deep.

Nothing to do with the crowd, he's been poor for a while now and was dire for the entire Euros.

No idea what Fergie's going to do with Young because presumably he needs to play his way back into form and get some confidence back, but at the moment it's just a liability playing him.

His mentality is poor, he just seems to have given up. When you watch him he rarely takes any risks or tries anything remotely adventurous, to the point where I think he's 'hiding' by shirking any offensive responsibility.

With Nani out of favour, this is the perfect time for him to stand up and convince SAF that he's a first choice Manchester United winger. We're probably going to buy another winger soon, Young's performances until January will dictate whether it's going to be someone first choice or another squad player.

We should never rely on him to be our first choice when everybody is fit, he doesn't have required quality, it's obvious both Nani and Valencia are better players than him, and from what I have seen from Kagawa(playing for his NT), he is better player on the left than Young too. He can be a good squad player, and that's it.

Does 'squad player' mean much in a team that's constantly rotated? Fergie's attitude seems to be to give everyone a turn - except Berbatov, of course.

Ashley Young 'in danger of turning into a one-trick pony'

Ashley Young was booed by the Aston Villa fans who once loved him and then 'hooked' at half time by Sir Alex Ferguson.

It wasn't the best return to Villa Park for the £17million forward, who has been struggling to recapture his dazzling early-United form.

And now Young has been heavily criticised by ex-Villa and former Chelsea forward Tony Cascarino, who scored 11 goals in 46 league games for the club.

In fact, it was only when Young came off and Javier Hernandez came on did United step into top gear to win 3-2.

Sub Hernandez scored a hat-trick as United increased their lead at the top of the table.

Writing in his column in the The Times newspaper, Cascarino says: 'Ashley Young is in danger of becoming a one-trick pony.

'He is a full international, signed for a lot of money. He needs to a do a lot more than cut inside and lay the ball off.'

Young has been involved in five United games this season, but hasn't scored yet.

In a perfect world he wouldn't start many games in the expense of Nani for us nowadays but considering NaniGate he's not a bad player to go to. Also, as I said before, he'll be now what Berbatov/Evans/Gibson have been at this club - getting bollocked after every game, even if didn't play.

He was no worse than Valencia or pretty much any United attacking player in that first half, got subbed cause we needed Chicharito. Valencia on the other hand, despite having been off-colour, is too good to be taken off in such circumstances. Suddenly it means Young had a particularly terrible game.

Exactly this, either he steps up & shows he can do Nani's job if/when he leaves, or we re-sign Nani & get him back playing to his full potential, or we have to sell Nani & spend big on a replacement.

We really need to get Nani back on board & firing on all cylinders.

It's fairly simple. At his best he's an effective performer who'll pass well, provide assists and some goals.

Bereft of confidence he'll work quite hard, get the ball and pass it to one of the two central midfielders.

He's bereft of confidence ATM.

Agreed. Given some more games, he will improve.
