Smashley Young

He was excellent when he came on today. It's taken over half the season, but someone finally made a run to that part of the box where ALL of Ashley Young's crosses go.

That's not true.... a lot of them hit the first man as well

For what it's worth that was Young's first assist since the home game with Chelsea back in September

He'll aim for the back post if he has a player running on from the back but from that position (pause the vid just before he takes the cross) he'll have been aiming to put it into the danger area just infront of the keeper for one of the 3 attackers in a central position, giving them a header infront of goal. He's definately overhit it slightly, Giggs has done well to get onto the end of it to poke it in. As i was saying, i dont give a feck, we scored!

You don't put the cross back post you don't score.

Not sure how you've come to this conclusion

It's about the trajectory of the ball when crossing from such a position. Near post and centre of the goal makes the defender favourite. It would take a great header to score. Go back post and all it takes is a touch.

With 3 men in a central position in your final attack, a cross to the centre of the goal in the hope that one of them gets their head on it is more advisable than hittin it deep to the far post nearly missing everyone. Its like hittin a shot across a keeper, your allowing more possibilites than shooting near post.

Try heading a cross that is still rising and then try doing when it is coming back down and tell me which is easier. That's why most goals from crosses will be scored either at it's highest point or when it's coming back down as it is easier to get over the top of the ball. A cross near post in that situation makes the strikers job more difficult than knocking one back post.

Right, but who said anything about near post? I know i'd rather compete for a header infront of goal with the whole goal to aim for than try and prod in an effort at the back post with a small part of the goal to aim for. The only time i'd aim for the back post if i see a player making a run in from that position, if Nani had been running in unmarked say. He's taking 2 of our attackers out of the game with that cross, but Giggsy's rescued it. Alls well that ends well.

It was the right cross. Cross it centre of the goal and the ball is still rising and more difficult to get on target.

Jeez man your hard work. You whip a ball into the centre of the box, how is it still rising by the time it reaches it. Giggs has done really well to rescue that at the back post, 9 times out of 10 the player wouldnt have reached it or poked it into the side netting and we'd all be cursing Young for wasting our very last attack when we'd 3 players looking to attack the ball in the middle of the box.

Anyway, we'll agree to disagree. Main thing is we won. I'll continue to aim my wicked deliveries into the centre :)

Go and cross a few balls from that kind of position. Try and hit the penalty spot area with a cross with any pace on it and see how you get on. It amazes me how people can care so much about football yet fail to understand it.

Doesn't it depend on the type of cross? I mean if its Evra kind of cross where he just whips the ball then it will still be rising by the time it reaches the penalty spot whereas nani kind of cross won't be.It was a good cross though, all you can ask of a player is to put a decent cross in a decent area which he did.It wasn't spectacular or anything but it was a good cross.

It amazes me that people claim definites still, when one thing the game of football has taught me is that nothing is written in stone.

Is there anything you feckers will not argue about? Young’s cross was excellent. It was a typical Young cross that he has been doing for years.

There probably is a reason why the clever people - like Giggs and Scholes have a tendency to be where the ball ends up..hardly a coincidence....

I can't understand why people appear to be so keen to hate Young and adverse to praising him, if it's just a case of you never wanting to us to sign him then it's too late, support our player rather than trying to enjoy the fact you were right.

He's been average this season but he's shown us what he can do at times and hopefully he can get an injury free period to do that again consistently.

Who the he'll hated him? It frustrates me how much we paid for him and how high his wages are, but he's good to have here. Not many backups as good as him when Antonio gets injured.

How often would we score from the kind of cross Evra provides?

Young just needs to get used to our style of play in the box. He's used to having taller players in the box like at Villa. He should take a leaf out of Nani and Valencias book, keep them low and look to avoid opposition players rather than get the ball over their, and our players heads. He's definitely capable the sort of cross that Nani pinged into the box for Scholes goal.

Although they're harder on the left for a right footed player.

May be 1 out of 10 times but the point is the cross wasn't rising as you were saying.

I don't think you've understood the point I was making. It would still have been rising in the middle of the goal but had dipped for the back post.

What really impressed me with Young yesterday was his winner's mentality when we conceded. He looked like a Manchester United player those last 10 minutes. He kept his cool every time he got the ball and made the right decision every time.

It was a good delivery, we need more of that from corners. Have to say though I wish he'd take more imitative on the ball. He always seems to want someone else to do something first, like evra overlap before he'll do anything. Wish he'd just take on players himself sometimes.

I think he has been one of our better players today. I like his tracking back, and he does a lot of it.

Except Rio, Evans and De Gea, we have no good player on the pitch by first half performance.

Watch opinions of Young in this thread suddenly change after his 2nd today.
