Smashley Young

The charge levelled against Young has always been that he looks quality for part of the season and then goes completely missing for months on end. It happened with Villa as well. He had a few months were he was excellent and then suddenly his form dropped.

It's been a massive disappointment because along with Valencia we have two wingers who bring nothing to the table when they are out of form.

He's looked such an 'Aston Villa' player recently, right now, he looks out of his depth to be honest.

He started brilliantly but has been poor since the Chelsea game. One issue I have with him is his lack of willingness to take on the defender, he always seems to want to come onto his right foot and slow the game down even though he has the pace to beat the full-back and whip in a cross with his left.

I think he'll prove to be a good signing, but right now he is playing poorly.

A really average player.

Too predictable like Valencia.

How much more did Mata cost than Young?

Young is just a bag of average.

He really is an utter waste of £16m, or whatever we paid for him.

Thing is, we were told he could cross a ball, and yet that's been one of the worst parts of his game.

I don't rate him at all and don't think he's going to step up to the mark.

He showed in the beginning of the season that he is capable of playing at the required level, however briefly. Hopefully he regains some form soon, he does not deserve to be starting right now. Who else can we play though?

This isn't a kneejerk and a "told you so" post, but unlike most posters here, my thoughts on the Young signing back then was: meh. He didn't impress me at Villa.

His United career started brightly, but the last few weeks confirmed what I was already thinking: he's an above-average player and his set pieces aren't as good as they say.

Jesus christ,

from Ronaldo to Valencia to Ashley Young.

If he doesnt start, who starts on the left? Park? He was just as shite

Nani is better on the right and today was another performance showcasing why. He put in half a dozen brilliant crosses, he doesnt do that from the left

He's been worrying poor of late. I really hope his early form was a better indicator as to his actual ability rather than this one dkmensional, clumsy player that weve seen since. He's looked frightened of the defender, the ball and his crossing has been crap.

Ive said that before - i really dont rate him ( nor Valencia).

Yup.

First we had Ronaldo, then Valencia, now Young.

How we have fallen. The new holy trinity btw (Rooney, Ronaldo, Tevez) seems like a distant memory as well.

Confidence player who looks low on confidence. Sure he's predictable but he's not beating anyone even with pace and he's not making quick decisions with the ball. He'll come good again as the season progresses.

Sounds like alot our players are confidence players!

I've heard this being said about Rooney, Young, Anderson and Carrick.

At the beginning of the season he looked a refined specialist right footed left sided player. We'll just have to hope that he gets back to that form again

the same ashley young people were creaming over with his fantastic 2 goals against arsenal, now he is shit and a poor signing.

Well they are human, Rooney isn't a confidence player though he's a purple patch player for me as is Anderson to an extent they need to develop the consistency.

 Knee-jerk central.

Young was great till his injury then he returned into an uninspired side playing average football and it's hard to settle into that when you're new at a club. No matter how old you are.

That's why we should have left footed players on the left. We don't. The only left footed wing players are evra and giggs, but giggs plays in the center these days...

I would sooner have played giggs on the left, he's still creates more than young in that position.

What's your opinion on where Fabio should be played? Just checking out something...

White text: I actually agree with you that we should've moved Giggs out, at least in the second half. Even said so in the Giggs thread!

It's not like Young is 21. He has been in the Premiership since ages. If you have bothered to watch him more when he was at Villa, periods like that for him are not surprising...

Settling into United isn't easy, not even if you're youngs age is what I meant. Every player has slumps, I'm not saying Young won't. All I'm saying is the critism he gets right now in this thread is pathetic and not warranted for.

This. If we really wanted to add another winger, why not look at a left-footed option, considering that all our other are right footed. Didn't really understand his signing from the off.

I've got a feeling that his bright start at United was down to eagerness to impress. Perhaps now that he's had that run of good games, he's become complacent?

Obviously I don't know Young, and I can't read minds, but I'm just throwing it out there as a possibility.

Young is not someone you can rely on consistency. Since he can't be consistent in a small pond what is the guarantee he'll be at United?

You get what you pay for. And Young is a utility player just like Valencia. It's not someone who you can rely on winning you the deciding match. Yes he can, and sometimes utility players stand out, but you can't rely on it every time...

Or maybe he's just not that good.

He started brilliantly but has been poor since the Chelsea game.

Did he though?

He along with the entire team was quite meh against West Brom.
He did okay against Spurs but nothing else.
Scored twice brilliantly against Arsenal but was he really anything special?

I for one didn't think he was good enough prior to him signing, I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt though and after the goals against Arsenal I was willing to eat my words but it hindsight he wasn't that great even then.

Unless he seriously ups his game he'll be no more than a squad player come next season and to think we were saying last summer we didn't need anymore wingers...

I don't feel he is anything special. How quick is he as he seems reluctant to go past his marker?

Never wanted him at United in the first place and was a bit pissed when we got him. Thought I was proven wrong (and very happy about it) during the first few weeks. After that he got injured and since he came back hes been the player I feared we would get. A left winger version of Valencia. Capable of having a good day, and definitely a good squad player, but too predictable and not adding that cutting edge that we need in the important games. Cutting edge that players like Nani offer.

This pretty much sums up my feelings, I hoped if we brought in another wide player it would be Sanchez or Hazard, younger players with world beater potential. Young is a solid player, good to have in the squad but his bright start was fairly short lived, but in fairness the whole team isn't really firing right now.

Young has only had one really outstanding game in a United shirt, against Arsenal.

His crossing which is suppose to be a strong suit has been a source of constant frustration for me, since day 1.

He's been too "kick and run" for my liking. We need a lot more guile in our forward players. I think we've become a little too reliant on our wingers for our chances and when Young and Nani are in poor form it really hurts the team.
