Sir Alex. A legend and one of the greatest managers ever. Good luck in your retirement. #respect

He's been manager of United since before I was born, it's so strange now that he's gone, or going to be.

I loved that moment.

Read the rumours on here last night just before I went to sleep. Had very weird dreams all night. short and uneasy dreams I kept waking up from. Then my sister called me as soon as it was announced.

Am in a state of shock. Shock tinged with intense sadness and abit of fear. Though not as bad, reminds me abit of when my dad died. Its in that area.

That does not surprise me. After my parents, the relationship with SAF is the longest in my life. And he has popped into my life several hours every week for 26 years. He inspired and authored so many moments of sheer ecstasy and also disappointment that I experienced.

Its an emotional relationship. And its over.

I have looked upto this man all my life. He has been a key mentor. Genuinely not sure what comes next, and if the bond with Manchester United remains the same. Time will tell.

I can't find the words...except 'Thank you.'

What can you even say?

A simple thank you just does not seem enough but it's all I've got for now.

Absolute legend

Finding it hard to process my thoughts right now, all the threads just seem a blur.

The two memories flashing in my mind are Fergie's celebration of Brucie's winner in the 8 minutes of stoppage time and his smiling face as he stood soaked in Moscow after winning his second CL.

Thank You Sir Alex, there will never be another.

Top manager and top man.

Thanks for everything Fergie. You truely are the absolute greatest there has ever been.

Yep. And what's more, he did it all with Manchester United's traditions at heart.

feels surreal, he has been the manager all my life time and this will get getting used to. It was obvious it would happen soon but the way he had been talking about plans for next season, I always believed he would stay on this year and go for another European run. Feeling very sad at the moment and nervous as to whether the new manager will be able to successfully take over and also retain the players and their trust.

The worst part about that is that they've only reserved 5 pages for Fergie. Surely the entire newspaper should be about him :(

They're releasing a 36 page issue for him tomorrow I think, it's a bit too soon to re write a whole paper in a few hours to be fair to them.

i know there has been the odd mention in this thread but his achievements in scotland should not be overlooked breaking the old firm was something special in it's own right,a very great man indeed.

Terrible front page.

There's a big difference between retiring and quitting. The word quit shouldn't be assoiated with Fergie...

The media, that's going to be a small thing but noticeable thing. We don't have Fergie to keep them in line anymore. Journalists won't be afraid anymore.

I know it's a cliche but it's kind of hard to put a tribute into words when you consider the job he's done. Legendary is all I can say to be honest although that doesn't really sum it up.

Absolutely shocked, nothing less. Always knew this day had to come, but now that it's here it's still completely fecking surreal. I was but a year old when he was appointed, and the club without him just register. It feels like one of my parents resigning as my parent.

Red Is The Man. We'll never see his like.

Stand up, put your hands together and give him a big round of applause! Sir Alex Ferguson is retiring. Congrats for an amazing career!

I'm devastated. What a man. They're never will be anything like what he has achieved in football ever again.

Thankyou for everything, Sir Alex. Best manager in the game ever.

Does anyone else feel like it has not registered at all? I mean the greatest manager ever, the one who has brought so much success to our club and it doesn't feel that different. It's like I can't even accept it until I see he's gone or something.

Keep thinking about those younger supporters who never have known anyone but Sir Alex as manager. As strange as it will be for all of us to see someone else managing the club, for those who know nothing else it has to be even stranger.

I started following and supporting United right before SAF took over, so for me Ferguson IS United. It is just impossible to imagine this team without him.

One of my favourite SAF moments is his reaction to Berbatov's bycicle kick vs. pool (gif anyone?)

I hope that whoever succeds him continues on developing young talents and, as SAF does, looks for the players character when scouting for additions.

BBC America's entire morning news broadcast was about Sir Alex, as it should be.

It seems to have crept into nearly any form of live television today. I found out about it after I flicked on the telly, and ITV came on as Lorraine Kelly's show was just ending, and she announced it. That's how I found out. Great!

I was away yesterday so I didn't even know about the speculation which came out of nowhere yesterday afternoon. I couldn't believe it.

It's just so monumental that anyone who has a platform to announce it seems to be doing so, and the tributes from around the world are just flooding in. It's quite amazing, though still utterly upsetting.

I haven't seen any sort of montage or video tributes yet. Are there any yet? I think I'd just burst into tears if I saw one. I read a rumour that the whole dressing room at Carrington broke down, as Fergie welled up midway through his announcement. That alone had me on the edge a bit.

Crikey, "it's just a game" and all that, eh?

Apparently Fergie was in tears when he revealed it.

There would be something very moving about watching a 71-year-old, working-class (or used to be, at least!) gruff, Glaswegian, authoritarian workaholic crying.
