Sir Alex Ferguson has retired

Reading that, it's clear Fergie trusted Gill implicitly. Wonder when that Friday morning was exactly?

Doubt he told them 'officially' that early because of the Stock Exchange rules. But he may have hinted it pretty early.

Yeah of course. That's when that meeting was supposed to be, not sure if its correct to be honest but I've read that somewhere and I can't think where now!

Just catching-up on SSN tonight, and during the break they ran an ad for Sunday's matches, going on about Chelsea or whatever that I wasn't really paying attention to - but then they got to our game, and the voice-over says something like "And then... Sir Alex Ferguson's final home game" and feck that cut right through me :(

Such a simple thing to hear, but it damn near set me off. Sunday is going to be ridiculous :(

If he feels this is the right time to say goodby there's no need to doubt his decision.

He'll stick around to ease Mosey in, and if he thinks it's the best for the club then it really is.

Can't put in the words how grateful I am for everything Fergie did for United.

For me, and think few others, he's best manager there has ever been. Privilege to witness his era.

Hope he'll enjoy his retirement, can't think anyone other that would be more deserving than him.

Every single one of us loves Alex Ferguson! Loves Alex Ferguson! Loves Alex Ferguson!

Mosey is to Moyes as Frogie is to Fergie?

Christ this has been a tough tough week

I hope the players put in a performance on Sunday

I think the fans should start clapping or do some sort of special honour for Fergie once the fourth official raises the board to show how many minutes of extra time are going to be played.

Stand up and clap for the remaining minutes of the match.

It does move on to tears, we will forever be greatful to Sir Alex Ferguson for everything that he has achieved with Manchester United. We wish him well in his retirement.

Robin van Persie:
I am really sad to hear that the manager sir Alex is retiring, but I'm really happy I have had the opportunity and the honour to work with him. He is a great manager and above all even a greater person. I have to thank him for an amazing year and for making my dream come true by winning the league. I wish him and his family the very best.

I fancy the WBA fans to join in his standing ovation at the end of next Sunday's game.

I'm glad these next two games are against teams whose season ended months ago and fans don't consider us "rivals". Just imagine the amount of venom if we had to end it at Anfield.

Anyone else surprised by the lack of reaction from our current players? Just seems a bit quiet from them.

I read somewhere that the players have been told to refrain from tweeting about this retirement.

ALEX FERGUSON is furious that his farewell plans were ruined by a leak, writes Alan Nixon.

The Manchester United chief planned to break the news of his retirement on the pitch at Old Trafford on Sunday when he made his end-of-season address to the fans.

The Scot saw it as the ideal way of bowing out in front of the Sunday worshippers – with his 20th title trophy in hand.

But Ferguson’s idea – known only to a select few – came out in the media and spoiled his fun. A source close to Ferguson said: “Sir Alex is raging that someone very close let him down.”

I hope this is welcome here, but I just wanted to say how exceedingly grateful I am for such a gesture and let you know that you should be proud of your club.
A couple of weeks ago, my younger (17) cousin was killed in a tragic road accident. Her 12-year-old brother was distraught and numb with grief. Nothing we could say or do could get him out of his shell. Even his light-hearted jibes to me about RVP being at a "proper" club lacked heart.
Two days ago, on the very day of the big announcement about Fergie's departure, my uncle answered a phone-call from a gruff Glaswegian voice, asking to speak to his son.
It was the man himself, who, to my United-mad cousin, is akin to a deity. Right up there alongside such mythical figures as Santa and Rob Lewis. He asked my speechless-relative how he coping, how he thought the season had went, who he thought should succeed as United manager and gave him tickets to the final home match of the season, against Swansea.
Ever since his call, my cousin has been star-struck and -more importantly- now seems to be in a much better place and is recovering from the mental trauma of his sister's death. He has come out of his shell and seems more like the care-free, footie-mad boy he was before.
So thanks to United, Sir Alex, and the staff from the very depths of my heart for making a young boy happy again. And to the fans - take pride in following such a classy club.

Capello says his decision to retire might be down to the stress of the job. Not surprising really as you get older it gets harder to cope with that aspect of the job. He has won the title and some fans weren't entirely happy with that. I think that is evident looking at this forum and how much criticism he has received this season. Once a manager brings success the fans believe it is their divine right to win all the time and believe it gives them the right to criticise his every decision.

Judging by the speed with which the Moyes discussions were concluded, I must say that his plans couldn't have been known only to a "select few". Quite a few people had to be involved.
