Sir Alex Ferguson has retired

Judging by the speed with which the Moyes discussions were concluded, I must say that his plans couldn't have been known only to a "select few". Quite a few people had to be involved.

Well Moyes has come out and said he wasn't planning on leaving and was preparing for pre-season so it might of come as a surprise to him as well.

My mate (who is a Man Utd fan) reckons Fergie probably didn't want all this attention and instead of people focussing on the title win everyone is now talking about Fergie leaving and that isn't what he would of wanted.

I have seen a few thing like this on other sites, but this caught my eye.

The 5-1 loss to the bitters that had us calling for safs head

I remember the match very well, but what I am calling bollocks on is the calls for his head, I remember no such calls or have I just forgot ?

that game isnt mentioned in that article at all:confused::confused::confused: and its not a pivotal moment at all, would only have been pivital had he been sacked.

some more reading, the 10 defining moments of his United career.

http://backpagefootball.com/the-ten...lex-fergusons-manchester-united-career/57852/

read thought that list and it was a decent list, apart from this.

Lee Martin scored the only goal in the replay the following Wednesday night and it bought Ferguson some much needed breathing space. For years it was believed that Robin’s third round winner was the goal that ultimately saved Ferguson’s job but former Chief Executive Martin Ferguson revealed yesterday that it was in fact the winning cup final goal that saved his skin.

Did he really say that?

I think that his coming operation/surgery is worse than he thought; and decided to take it easy on his life after that.

I think the Real Madrid game was a huge factor. He was apoplectic afterwards and it probably made him realise that the stress was too much to deal with.

The video in the utd video thread pushed me to tears for the 1st time since the announcement. It'l never be the same without the great man.

Was just going to post this. Sir Alex is fantastic with things like this, right up to the very end.

Wonderful story and a real insight, rarely reported, of just what a humanist Ferguson is. He wouldn't want this reported, because of the nature of the man, but it reveals the true personality and character of Ferguson the person rather than the more cold, hardened, cantankerous image that is propagated throughout the media of Ferguson the Manager.

I do think, after his retirement, we are going to see more and more of this side to him..

It could be. Our games after that were taking a significant plunge: insipid, and just cruise along in automatic gear.

remember thinking that his reaction after the sending off was all wrong. of course a demonstration of anger was appropriate. but he flailed his arms and started raging in the dug out, ran down to the touchline and remonstrated for far too long.

remember thinking feck sake Fergie get them organised quick. before you knew it we had conceded and it was over. he was contributing to the sense of chaos after the decision and the players looked directionless. I would love to have seen him run down to the touchline and start shouting at the players and pointing at where he wanted them before the damage was too much. couldnt help but feel it was all getting too much for him.

Sort of understandable now. Moyes is going to have a huge task to motivate them, especially some of the older players like Giggs Evra and Rio. I doubt they will oppose him but they will be cut up for a while.

Nope, not Giggsy for sure.

Him probably less but I reckon he will still be weird about it.

I don't think he will, in fact I am confident the older players will take it upon themselves to ensure standard don't drop with a change of manager. Sir Alex always made it important to surround himself with players of a certain mentality.

Yeah, in the past, it wouldn't have been beyond us to keep out an insipid Madrid team for 30 minutes. The collapse was not like us at all.

There's this nagging feeling in my mind that's there something not right about this retirement, just doesn't feel right. He jumping up and down and singing 'It's hard to believe it's not Schooooooles' a few weeks back. Maybe the original plan was to bring Moyes in as an assistant but with his operation SAF felt he might as well hand over the keys.

I have the same sort of concerns, but Darren Ferguson says it's not health related so hopefully that's the case. When we finally hear from Sir Alex himself then we might get a bit more insight into the decision and timing.

I reckon last year really did take a lot out of him.

Remember how we felt and multiply that by ten. It must have taken so much energy so get himself up for this season and at his age, thats incredible

I can't wait for the 'Official Sir Alex Ferguson 1986-2013' Triple DVD Box Set!! I'm gonna save my pennies for that!! :) And not to mention the second half of his Autobiography 'Managing My Life'!

the secret footballer has an article today where he talks about a chat with a former united player. apparently this player has his finger on the pulse and is invariably right about things. said this retirement was supposed to happen last season. but with the way the league slipped on the last day, he carried on. would make sense. things have been a little odd this year despite the title triumph. probably due to be announced last game tomorrow until someone close to fergie let it out.

That's what I've been thinking, last season would have made more sense, title 20 and him being 70 would have meant everything was rounded off nicely. But we all know what he is like, he had to right the wrong from last season, and he always has to put challengers in their place

I really hope we get a second book from him.

yeah and what a testament to the man. he could've ended up two seasons trophyless and that much older but he had the self belief and will to win (or fear of failure with city looking like they were in the ascendancy) to carry on knowing he would put it right. amazing. so happy he is going out as a champion.

Finger on the pulse, my arse! It's been banded about for more than a season and Dave Whelan said last year that Fergie would retire after the 2013 season.

The rest of that article is repeating the summation of many writers since.

Didnt Gill say he was surprised when Fergie told him about his plans a few months back?
Why would he lie..
And why would Fergie tell a player who would then tell someone who writes anonymously for the Guardian.

Sounds like bs.

Funny though, how other supporters have hated him over the years yet most of the (normal) people I talk to say they'll miss him.

Because there are a whole bunch of idiots out there who can't seperate what goes on in sport from the person who makes the hard decisions. They purport to understand the person and say he's this and that without knowing shit.

Roy Keane live on ITV. Not bitter this time but still very hurt by how it ended between him and SAF.

...Or we're led to believe Fergie was discussing this and it was overheard by a player??? Where? FFS, in the toilet? It's hard to believe isn't it?

From the BBC live text:

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane on ITV: "I was not surprised when Sir Alex Ferguson announced his retirement. I wasn't as shocked as everyone else. At 71 he'd had great success and there are such demands in the game now. I was disappointed, of course. It's always sad to see a great manager leave the game.

"I have massive respect for what he's done as a manager. I was lucky to play under him and privileged to play for the club. He'll be a big loss.

"I always felt when I played under him, we just never wanted to let him down. That's what great managers do. Sometimes after big games it wasn't the hairdryer that worried me - it was when he was quiet. We worried we'd let the man down. The hairdryer never concerned me - he was just releasing a bit of anger, which we all do.

"He'd have a feel for what a certain player might need. I always felt he got that spot on. He had a feel for the group and what certain characters might need. He made a few mistakes, particularly with me towards the end, but he will still be missed.

"With a great manager you just felt you could not let him down."

finger on the pulse is my interpretation of what was said. sorry if it upsets you. secret footballer writes some great articles. hadnt seen it mentioned on here. I've no problem entertaining the notion that Fergie may have been planning retirement at the end of last season. and the information seems relevant enough to this thread. being about Fergie retiring and all. maybe you know better

I believe its reported TSF was chatting to a mate who played for united under Fergie. when he asked the mate how he knew this he was told cos he has the same lawyers and got his info thru them. I'm sure that will be dismissed by many on here.
