Sir Alex Ferguson has retired

My words would do no justice to what Sir Alex has achieved here. He's an eternal legend and an inspiration.

Can't wait for Sunday, but it'll also be the sad end of an era.

Have to say despite all the speculation last night I really thought it was hot air, with the way he's talked about the squad and it's potential I really thought he was here for at least a season more. But he earned the right to call it a day on his terms a long time ago. The best club manager to date, no doubt about that.

A little bit of information:

During Sir Alex's tenure:

Real Madrid had 24 or 25 managers
Chelsea had 18 managers
Arsenal had 8 managers
Liverpool had 10 managers
Barcelona had 14 managers
England had 12 managers'
and US had 5 presidents and two of them were George Bush

Barney Ronay in the Guardian says SAF's last match is Swansea on Sunday. Is this confirmed? Sorry if it's been mentioned already

I thought it was a load of balls too. Got to work and started chatting about it and noticed it was 0925 and checked the Cafe, and broke the news - 2 seconds after saying it was a load of balls.

Legend. I'd give anything for a ticket to the match on Sunday.

After the news has begun sinking in the illusion of SAF's immortality has worn off and I am left marveling at the fact that he was still managing from top to bottom the biggest club in the world, at 71. It's phenomenal that Ryan Giggs is still playing, but to take on the responsibility and everything else that comes with managing United, and keep winning and rebuilding his teams, through-out his 60s and into his 70s is just outrageous. What an incredible example of drive, determination and ability in abundance.

I hope he maintains a strong involvement as a director - I would love to see the job stay within the group, which pretty much only leaves Ole. But I'd prefer Mourinho to Moyes for a multitude of reasons and Mourinho's only uncompleted challenge is to take on longevity...

The Glazers surely do come into it, in the sense that he might be too hot to handle for them, whereas Moyes has worked on a shoestring budget for the last 10 years and might appeal to them for that reason

I always hoped SAF would outstay the Glazers though

Thank you for everything Sir Alex. It was an honor to watch manchester United under your great reign.

Couldn't believe it when I got the call this mornin'. Was only discussing on Sunday with a couple of mates about the hip surgery and how that might affect him, one jokingly chirped in 'imagine he retired next week!', we all laughed. Not so funny now!

If you'd have said to me this time 24 hours ago we'd have Fergie's successor appointed and waiting today I'd have had you sectioned. Football, bloody hell.

Someone posted on reddit and RedIssue has mentioned it on Twitter: David Meek went on TalkShite today and suggested Fergie could have been "nudged" out against his will.

I didn't hear it, but did anyone else? Was this just a misinterpretation of what was said?

Growing school of thought that Fergie eventually got nudged out slightly against his will - more in Sunday's new RI.

Whaat..

Yep, we kicked him out after he just won us the 20th league title, so that we can land the most sought-after manager in world football, David Moyes.

I'm not saying it happened. Just wanted to know why David Meek might have said something like that, if he did. He's Fergie's ghostwriter after all.

Unfortunately I think that now qualifies as gospel truth. :(

David Meek is a respected journalist around Manchester. Would only add up if it was mourinho and not Moyes. Can't believe the club would do that to him though.

I think there are going to be 1001 suggestions as to why today was the right time to retire.

Has there been any reaction to SAF's retiring from Jose or other managers linked with the job?

Ffs, why would he want to stay as a director then?

Talksport were on about it this morning, I don't necessarily believe it but the timing seems odd, plus when you think about what he was saying only last week about transfer targets and not walking away from something he believes is really special only for him to then announce he'll retire...it does get you wondering. But by not walking away he probably meant staying about the club like he will do as a director.

There's no way Fergie was "nudged out" of anywhere. He fecking runs this club from top to bottom, nobody can say anything to him.

Well, I'm in denial, I won't believe we have another manager until I see them managing the team. And even then I won't believe it, becuase Fergie was supposed to miss a few games at the start of the season from this hip injury anyway.

Watching the football's greatest episode of Fergie now on Sky Sports. Even though I've seen it before, I cant help but feel down:( We'll never see the like again. Absolutely love the man.

He probably could've and may have even wanted to carry on, but he's a man of his word and unfortunately chose to do the most unselfish option and chose to retire. He forever stated his goal is to leave his successor a great squad and he has. He's built a back 4 for years to come, has one of the best strikers in the world at the moment and has positive locker room influences like Rio and Giggs to carry on the traditions he set forth when he's gone.

I think he knew had he stayed a couple more seasons, he wouldn't have the time to build another great squad to leave to his successor and that's why he said it's the right time to go.

Just seems so surreal. I thought with the way he was talking he'd be here a couple of years yet.

I could understand if he was stepping aside so the club didn't miss out on a certain manager, but with what looks likely it just doesn't make sense to me.

It's gutting.

I heard it, I think TalkSport are hamming it up somewhat.

"There is a scenario that he was blissfully going to carry on for at least another season, true to his programme notes, but then there was a top summit and the suggestion made [that he quit].

"I don’t think it would have to have been made forcefully, if he felt that the owners no longer had 100% confidence in him then I don't think he would have hesitated."
