Silva to City

Yay. Lets write off a quality player after one poor game. I see it worked wonders with Tevez last season.
An even better example would be Evra's first game for us.

You have to admit he was abmysmal today, though. If I didn't know he was playing I'd never have guessed -- as invisible as it's possible to be while still remaining on the pitch.

He's a genuine quality player and will probably come good at City, but I allow myself a quiet snigger at his wet squib of a debut, I must admit.

The problem wasn't Silva though. He looked quality on the ball. The problem was City's midfield were incapable of keeping the ball and getting it forwards to Tevez and Silva. Silva barely saw the ball because of this.

The odd thing was the whole 'playing on the left, then playing as support' bit.

He clearly is going to take time to settle, but what exactly will his role be?

Gutted Spuds didn't win today after the way they started. I love to laugh at them but often end up cheering for them on the side due to comic circumstances.

You have some high standards Waltraute!

He was nothing less than ok, he's really tidy on the ball

Most advanced of a midfield three.

He is a very good player. I don't think he is suited to playing wide left though.

Also, the idea that Tevez is slow and has a poor first touch, I still don't understand. He looked very sharp today.

Maybe I've been expecting too much, or just remember his very best games, but I honestly thought he was a shadow of his Valencia-self today.

I do think he'll show his true quality once he's settled in, as I mentioned upthread. I just thought he was a disappointment today.

Tevez has never had a poor touch, I still for the life of me begin to understand where that runmor came from, he's always been known for dribbling skills

He's gone faster since he moved to city, but he's by no means fast, a decent pace

Those times he was playing for us and the ball would come in and hit him and fly straight up in the air?

The thing is, I've never rated him That highly when he was at Valencia, he's a very very slick player but there's not too much substance to his game to be mentioned as world class.

It was more of the same today

Tevez is like Rooney. When he's playing badly his touch goes to shit.

Unfortunately, he played badly a LOT in his final season at United. Which is why he got a reputation for having a poor first touch.

Fair play, maybe playing with lads like Gareth Barry makes his touch stand out more than ever

I'd say on Shitty it's only second to Silva, but Balotelli has a better touch than both of them

eh? He looked slick as feck on the ball
but still rusty

If slick is passing the ball backwards and sideways all game sure. It was a typical Silva performance but too easy to write him off after one match for City and then look stupid. He'll need time whether he ends up being a success or more likely a flop.

They'll need all of their defensive midfielders in the side if they want him to play in midfield. Valencia got raped both times he played there. Not saying he cant do it long term, but its going to come at a cost as he learns the role.

City cannot play de Jongh, Yaya Toure ad Gareth Barry in the same side - That's why we saw Tevez and Silva getting hardly any of the ball.

Silva and Tevez got plenty of the ball. The problem was it was 30 yards from goal and neither did anything brilliant with it. Their link up was almost non-existant.

Two of them should do it.

How many fecking defensive midfielders does a team need?

Admittedly their back four isn't great but do they really need that much protection?

I was never on the 'world class' bandwagon, but I expected a lot more than what I saw today. Especially in the first half when City were more or less reduced to simply reacting to Spurs, no game of their own at all.

I do agree 'abysmal' was an overstatement, though. I also admit it's difficult to make an impact in your very first game, especially given the general lack of creativity of the City midfield.

Regarding the first touch of Tevez I agree with Pogue. To once again use a bit of hyperbole -- when he's 'on' it's almost like Berba's; when he's 'off' it's like Kuyt's.

I didn't watch the game. But what exactly were City's tactics, 433 with 3 dm's? Or a diamond and expecting one of Barry, De Jong or Yaya do more than they aren't capable of doing?

With Balotelli in the ranks, they have a pretty good setup for a 4231, just except it'll be with two DM's and no deep lying playmaker. Silva should be used in the centre AM position, he's kinda wasted on the wings, especially when you want Johnson and Balotelli starting as well.

:lol:That's the problem though! When people think of Tevez touch they compare it to Berba's, and most players in the world would look inadequate in that comparison.

Compare it to the normal footy player it looks pretty good. I mean, it's clearly one of the best in the Shitty team, just look how slick he was on the ball today, that one point where he skinned that lad on the counter with the defest of controls was an example.

It can never be Dirk Kuyt, he has the touch of a rapist! (footy banter)

I guess Toure and De Jong should be enough. But then it pretty much means that Silva is their entire midfield when they have the ball. So close him down and problem solved. He'll continue to pass the ball backwards and sidewards in non-threatening areas like today.

You know what Italian managers are like. Very few just set up for attacking football. Its all about being solid defensively and trying to control the game. Thats why the diamond is so popular with them. I guess Barry, De Jong and Toure was "better safe than sorry" today.

Toure's more than just a destroyer though. Or so I thought. I don't really watch enough La Liga to be certain.

He can pass yes. Same as Mascherano. But he's probably not going to open up a defence even if he's given space. It'll happen now and again but not enough imo for this to be City's setup.

Silva will be one of the front three if they play one. Or in the hole in a 4-4-1-1 if they play that. I think there's more chance of us seeing Milner or Balotelli playing left wing longterm than Silva as well.

I posted earlier in the thread about Unai Emery, Valencia's manager saying his team is now more flexible with tactics now that they dont have to play a certain way for David Silva. He seems intent on playing 4-3-3 this season... Which spells danger for Silva's new club if they want to play 4-3-3, because his old manager obviously felt he couldnt be a part of that.

:D I actually love the expression 'touch of a rapist', and it's the perfect description of the first touch of Kuyt, and sadly also Tevez when he's not playing well.

Not quite as bad as Kuyt, of course, but both Tevez & Rooney seem to lose their first touch & control when they're hitting a bad patch of form. So in general I think we agree Tevez got a good first touch - I've even seen control from him I'd deem brilliant - but it goes totally to pot when he's off his game.

Berba's in a class of his own, of course.

I used to think Mascherano was a bit better than your normal DM at doing the passing and creative stuff....but in the past year, he's proved he really isn't and passing it off to Xabi Alonso or a Riquelme is just really really easy.

Still think he's the best DM around when he's on form and not a tit though.

Ran the game for Argentina the other night, playing next to Banega and Gago.

No doubt he'll get a bit more credit when he's playing for Barcelona or whoever.

Silva was alright - but nothing more. He didn't really do anything, but saying that he didn't really do anything wrong. Once he settles in a bit and we see more of him, we'll be able to tell if he flops or not.

Indeed, judging him as a flop after one game in a new league is well, kind of pre-mature
