Show of hands....

I can see a Premier League midfielder like Tiote or Fellaini coming in.

If Fletcher can't come back we will be seriously lacking energy and steel in the midfield. I just have a feeling Fergie won't sign a foreign starlet or Modric or any of the expensive names out there.

If Berba leaves then I think Fergie will buy a fourth striker too.

I think if berbatov goes we def need a 4th striker because if Rooney got injured we would be toiling with Chico and Danny who are great as 3rd and 4th choice who could really improve but Utd should have a couple of top options in this position IMO

I dont think things are that bad;

Replacement for Scholes? Undoubtedly
Replacement for Giggs? Nah, surely in Valencia, Nani, Young & now Kagawa we have enough to cover for him
Replacement for Berbatov? Again not for me, if after this season Hernandez flops again and Welbeck struggles then maybe until then though a striker isn't needed. Berbatov at the moment doesn't look like leaving either
Replacement for Park? See Kagawa
Replacement for Evra? Not for me, if he has a mare of a season hopefully Fabio will return having had a blinder for QPR
Replacement for Rio? See Smalling
Replacement for Fletcher? Undoubtedly
Cover for Carrick? Undoubtedly

Personally I think we're one top midfielder away from being truly great again. Probably 2 or 3 players away from having one of the best squads in Europe.

Once again though I think we're done for this summer and I think it's looked that case since we missed out on Hazard and finally confirmed Kagawa (ignoring the Powell signing)

I think we need 4 players to be top dogs again you think 3 so we are not far off? The replacements that are needed for Giggs Scholes Rio Berbatov Evra Fletcher (hopefully not) even if they are within the squad right now ie Smalling Jones Fabio etc well there slots will have to be filled if they all step up! It's still 4 players we need IMO and I would rather see us get ready made players as we have enough potential already in this squad we need players to carry our youngsters onto the next level. (sorry this was on my iPhone)

maybe 2 or 3 times out of 10 (barca that is). you make it sound like modric is a robbo+zidane+maradona hybrid.

luka modric or his ilk alone is not going to cause barca to shit their kecks.

Dembele ffs. sounds like a musical instrument. Europe is frozen in fear.

Personally I think we're more than capable of beating Barcelona on our day right now so yes a player like Modric who would improve us massively would give us an even better chance

The difference I think in our opinions is I think the 2 or 3 players we need are all in centre midfield area whereas I think you're saying we're in need of improvements/replacements all over the pitch? I disagree with that.

We need a new CM to compete at the level Utd should be competing at, it's bloody obvious and has been for near enough three years. It's got to the point where it shouldn't even have to be said, it's like continually having to point out that the Earth isn't flat.

I fear that we will go yet another season relying on other areas of the team to compensate for our weaknesses in the middle of the park. What makes it so frustrating is that we have the makings of a great team but by continually skimping on (for me) the most important area of the pitch we are wasting the talent we have in other areas.

I really hope we have learned a lesson from last season. At the moment we have only one relyable midfielder who can play against all competitors. It would be madness to hang our hopes on Scholes, Clev and Anderson, and I don't even include Fletch and Giggs.

I fully expect us to sell Berbatov. Based on last season's performance I can't see where and when he should play. Kagawa is his replacement.

Giggs is now our fourth choice as a winger and maybe a back up in midfield if we are short of numbers. Against weaker teams he's a perfect choice and he will get his number of games. I hope Powell can be ready when Giggsy steps down.

Scholes and Ando is our playmakers. If we are lucky they can play 40-50 games. But if we sell Ando we need a quality replacement pronto. If we are unlucky this can be our achilles heel against the top teams.

Fletch is IMO so far away from fitness that he's basically out for the season. Sad but hard reality. If he comes back we shall be happy for him but I think the train has left the station. We need a new b2b player immidiately as a replacement/cover. You don't need a brainstorm for this decision.

Carrick is our rock in the middle but has no cover what so ever. We can't even rest him in the run in if we fight on all fronts. If we don't get a back up before the seasons starts someone is not doing his job properly. Give the old man some serious money and hit the market. What is it they don't understand and why are we waiting?

So all in all in a perfect world we should buy two quality proven mf. I'm happy with one but I fear none. Come on Fergie boy! Don't let the massa feck this up again. Take your chunk of the IPO and BUY!!

I think we need a left back to compete with Evra (I think Fabio is a mile of at left back although he'd be a decent right back somewhere) 2 centre mids needed (doubt Fletcher will get back to his level before) and a centre forward to ease the burden on Rooney!

If we don't sort out the midfield then we haven't a chance in Europe again, and we'll be reliant on City to not be as good in the league as they were last season, which I can't see happening.

Kagawa is Park's replacement?

Not sure whether to laugh or cringe at this idiotic comment. We know why he's calling Kagawa Park's replacement though.

You do? I was merely comparing them positionally from where I suspect Kagawa will play (from the left)

Yeah, okay. Park is a defensive winger, from what I've seen from Kagawa he plays in just behind a striker. But yeah, he's Park replacement.

.... Who thinks our spending is over for this summer?

I've thought we'd be done following the completion of Kagawa for a while but the fact everything has gone dead in terms of speculation has only strengthened my opinion so I guess a second question would be how would you feel if we don't sign anyone else this window?

I fear its over.

Didn't our defence cost us the league last year rather than our midfielders?

That's how I see it IMO.

I completely disagree. While our defence wasn't at its best last season, it was still good enough. True, it had a rotten day vs Everton, but it was partly because when we were 4-2 and 4-3 up, we weren't able to hold on to the ball at all. Everton just kept getting it back and piled on the pressure. Any defence would end up crumbling when it faces wave after wave of attack. Wigan, different story, but again - midfield was terrible, couldn't keep the ball, etc. Didn't create anything and gave Wigan confidence to attack.

It didn't look that terrible in midfield last season, compared with 2010/11, because Carrick was on top form and Scholes was fresh in the second half of the season. But we were also helped by being knocked out of the cups early, because we didn't have quality backups for them. And even then, looking at matches we won like Norwich and Spurs away, it was amazing how we just could keep the ball at times. It still happens too often.

Is all very much spot on.

Nail on head.

Europe especially was down to how poor our midfield was.

Baines seems like the most realistic next transfer target for us and perhaps then we'll try to bring a midfielder. It's mid-July though and we've usually done our business early in the window in the past so if we get to the end of July with nothing concrete then chances are we'll be done in the market once the season starts.

We need a midfielder badly but I reckon Ferguson is a bit stubborn on this one, as if he wants to prove he can win with current set of midfielders.

When SAF is done he usually says he's done so that all the spasticness can stop.

I think he still wants players, whether we get them with our 'value' policy is an entirely different story.

Just reading on another forum that Steve Bates (journalist) met with Sir Alex whilst he was on tour. Apparently Fergie said there will be no more signings and that if the fans want big name signings then they are going to have to wait. Was on MUTV Press Pass.

I'd be of the opinion that our club is well and truly fecked if we actually don't sign a midfielder or left back.

tbh when I started this thread I thought we were done full stop, we may still be but at least we've been in for players since - Lucas and RVP

I reckon we'll get one of them....

Fergie said publicly at the time that those wanting a big name can wait but he wants at least 1 more signing.

 we lose the title to our bitter, bitter rivals and get completely embarassed in Europe.

Our answer? One good quality signing and one for the future who has not played above League 2.

Excellent.

Really sends out a message that.

FWIW I think IF we being anyone in it will be a left back. Makes you wonder what's going on though. Publicly Fergie's saying we're "working hard" too bring in a few more players yet behind the scenes allegedly saying that's it.

Perhaps the conspiracy theorists re Lucas and RVP were right?

What do you mean by that? We're obviously going to be good enough to challenge for the league. We're better than last season after all.

Ando, Cleverley and Vida back fit again would help I imagine.

DE Gea
Rafael-Rio/Evans-Vida-Evra
Valencia-Cleverley-Ando/Carrick-Nani
Kagawa
Rooney

Lindegaard
Smalling, Jones
Scholes, Giggs, Young, Powell
Welbeck, Hernandez
Not a lot of wrongs there. We finished level on points with City despite injuries wrwcking havoc to our squad throughout of last season.
But your hatred for Glazers blind you, like the rest of your kind.
Idiot.

^ It isn't Cleverley with either Carrick or Anderson. It's Carrick with either Cleverley, Scholes, Anderson, Giggs etc etc. Make no mistake. Carrick is the main man in midfield.

I reckon we want one or two more but we won't end up paying the money and Fergie won't sign someone he doesn't really want.

I'd be of the opinion that our club is well and truly fecked if we actually don't sign a midfielder or left back.

Yeah, Old Trafford getting demolished by the Germans was nothing. If we don't get a big name signing then this club really is OVER!

It's whoever Ferguson wantsto put in midfeld regardless of who we think is the main man.

Whilst that's true it doesn't change anything. Carrick is the main man.

I thoroughly doubt that happened. Would have been all over Twitter I reckon.

Well we'll see wont we? I for one cant see Fergie not playing 2 strikers....

I think you will be in for a shock. The type of players we are looking at, combined with the lack of interest in signing a CM, in my view can only suggest a possession based game, with considerably more players operating in central areas, rather than out on the touchline.

Nothing else makes any sense to me. Scholes and Carrick were overran at times last year, especially in Europe. SAF is not a fool, he must have seen that too. So the only logical conclusion i can draw from considering all the factors, is that he is not overly concerned about a 2 man central pairing, because there will not be only 2 players operating in and around that central area next season.

But you know what? This time i won't be mocking these comments. Hazard, Lucas' or Modric fees/ wages are just ridiculous. I just hope SAF told Sao Paolo board to feck right off in response to their demands.

i wont be surprised if there are no new arrivals. re: midfield - perhaps fergie feels that one of cleverley, jones, anderson or tunnicliffe would step up. Or else, with kagawa creating chances, he thinks that all we need is someone to cover him - carrick or jones would do.
I think the left back position is more of a concern - we cant afford evra to have another rotten season.
