Should Rooney walk straight back into the team?

He had a decent game I thought, his touch was fine and his passing good. His penalty was just shocking though and will get the most attention. He got a goal though, let's hope he goes on one of his runs now.

I thought his passing was pretty bad, when he kept it simple it was decent enough but he kept trying elaborate through balls that didn't ever come off. His touch and short passing wasn't bad though, which is better than a majority of his come backs. Either way, I'm very happy Welbeck played against Liverpool and Rooney didn't.

Got a poor game out of the way tonight and will be ready to torment Spurs at the weekend

He comes off the pitch with something to prove after the 5 or at best 6/10 performance and the wayward penalty

Rooney played fine. No big deal at all - no need to make a fuss about it. It seemed to be as if he just wanted to complete 90 minutes and get it under his belt. Thought he just wanted to stick to a certain low gear just to make sure he doesn't aggregate the injury. He didn't really chase down Jaaskelainen at all despite having a few opportunities to do so for example.

He'll start against Spurs - which he'll be well up for. Glad he got a goal, gutted that he couldn't of bagged the second.

If he is to start against Spurs i'd want to see a more self-sacrificing style of performance from him, helping Clev-Carrick [assuming they are the two] and with and eye to the left wing as he is better than Kagawa defensively.

It's not as though Rooney has suddenly become a poor footballer. He actually had a solid game today. A few rough edges here and there, but that's to be expected when returning from an injury. The pk miss is the huge talking point and there is a discussion to be had as to whether the assignment should fall to RvP.

Roo looked like a player who's hungry and ready to tear someone's anus back up through their throat. Unleash the little boy in Roo!

How many more times....no no no and fecking no. Nobody should EVER walk straight into a Manchester United team. Is it any wonder that so often it takes him 3 or 4 games to find form when he knows he can play like crap and still not be dropped. Players should be played on form not potential, and that goes for Rooney, RVP and anybody else you care to mention.

I think the great thing now is that he doesn't walk straight into the team, for the last few years without Rooney you wouldn't feel confident.

But with RVP now here, Welbeck and Hernandez a few years older and improved and Kagawa and Cleverley who can play the "in the hole" role, we can actually afford to let Rooney slowly get back into the side and into his form instead of chucking him in at the deep end and hoping he has a blinder.

Rooney hardly set the stage alight last night but he scored the wining goal and battled well, plenty of the usual hard work, tracking back etc.

Coming back from 4-5 weeks out isn't easy for any player but we know that Rooney has always struggled to re-find his form after injury and I was actually pleasantly surprised with the impact that he did have on the game.

Either way there's no question that having all of these players coming back from injury is a huge benefit to us whilst we are still competing on three fronts.

If he is fit and fresh enough, he will probably start. Fergie always said that he needs games and doesnt really tire

I've just seen the penalty miss. I can't believe he stamped the grass back in AND did 'what the feck is wrong with my boots' look

No excuses for the penalty that was terrible but his all round performance was ok considering it was his first game back. Id start him against Spurs.

He should go straight back in he's arguably our best player.

When you have a player like Rooney when he is in the team is that he brings more to the table than just how he is playing.

There is a reason why often people say he is the heart of the team - because when he is around it breeds even more confidence that things can happen. There are so many that lament that we don't have a Keano is in the middle of the park but, Rooney provides that type of personality on the pitch IMO and it doesn't matter if it's as a CM or a forward - he can lift the whole team.

His reputation alone will give the other team pause. While the likes of Kagawa / Welbeck and Chicha are excellent, I guarantee you teams are more afraid to face Rooney. His presence on the pitch will means that it will make it harder for teams to focus on shutting down RVP.

So while Rooney may not be in top form, just being in the team adds a lot in itself.
