Should Rashford make the England squad?

On performances and fitness, its a simple no.

England are at a stage where they have a wealth of very good attacking players who are in great form... with a few more who are knocking on that door.

If he gets in there it will be on past merit only. But we know Southgate is one to pick players on that

I don't watch many England games but I seen the Ukraine game last year and and he came on as a substitute and he couldn't have looked less interested if he tried, I don't know if that was a particularly bad game for him or if he's always like that but no point bringing him if that's his normal form off the bench for England because he obviously won't be starting.

Basing it off United performances this season he should he nowhere near the England squad

Yep he should be dropped and if he has an injury, he should go get 100% fit and start repaying that huge United contract next season!

If the names of Rashford, Henderson, Philips are announced today then you know that it’s going to be a painful summer……

If Southgate picks any of these then him being linked to the Utd job would make us an even bigger laughing stock…..

I really don't think he deserves it, but Gareth will pick some players that he has trusted for a long time.

It's 26 players, right? So, I think he might sneak in as that 25th/26th player, but if it was 23 he wouldn't go. I don't want to derail the conversation too much by listing a full squad even though I think it's relevant to. However, if we assume it's 3 GK, 9-10 DF, 6-7 MF, 7-8FW... He has a chance still. There's a bit of overlap with players who can be considered a midfield player or forward such as Foden etc.

My picks for the forwards would be Foden, Gordon, Kane, Watkins, Saka, and Palmer. There is room for a 7th out of Grealish, Rashford, Sterling, Toney, Bowen, and Eze. Maybe an 8th if Southgate prioritizes having more attacking options from the bench rather than a versatile defender for example.

England don't have many players with pace out wide who try to run in behind.

Saka, Foden, Palmer etc all want to occupy similar positions. England need someone like Rashford or Gordon for that.

If it was a 23 man squad there is no way he would go - with the 26 man squad there is a chance though.

He absolutely doesn't deserve to go though no.

Not at the expense of Rashford.
Alright? You originally said he wouldn't go at all, i very much disagree unless his injury is bad. Rashford also only played 15 mins against Brazil and didn't even play vs Belgium. I think if he is in the squad he won't be starting and he will be a bench option.

He doesn’t deserve a squad place over others mentioned already. He is also highly unlikely to play much even if he makes the squad. So best for everyone if he takes some time off instead rather than bench warming and helping others train.

I don't think he deserves it. Although he's mainly been pretty good with England and could be an experienced superb.

If you look at players in the wide positions they've got so many performing better than him. Most of them are left-footed RW though, but I have no doubt Southgate will try to force them all in and lose some shape and balance.

Saka, Foden & Palmer are all in the squad. Bowen probably deserves the call-up too. That's four. He'll probably pick Gordon.

I probably wouldn't, but I'm not surprised if he calls up both Rashford and Grealish.

I tend to agree. I don’t think either Rashford or Grealish have done enough, but I expect them on the plane. I can’t see Rashford getting starts though, he’d be a regular 70th minute sub at a guess.

It would do him a world of good to be left out and have a summer to think about his entitlement and application.

To be honest even when he was wildly inconsistent as a starting youngster with us (before his mostly very good and then entirely terrible last 2 seasons - both actually quite consistent!) he was a dangerous sub for England.

I remember thinking at the time we would be better off using him more as an impact sub too, where his pace and unpredictability (even to himself) seemed quite effective for England against tired defences.

So I think he might still make it, even if he doesn't deserve to.

Doesn't sound like he will make it.

I applaud Southgate if he makes these decisions based on form and playing time. That being said picking Shaw strongly goes against this. But as mentioned they've got plenty of attacking players on form and not many left-backs, so I guess it's fair.

Bowen, Foden and Gordon should all be ahead of him and there’s an argument for Sancho as well but we all know Southgate plays favorites so it wouldn’t surprise me if he finds himself on that bus.

He doesn’t deserve to be the United squad, let alone the England squad

Not a chance should he make the squad.

Southgate bringing loads of defenders sounds about right. Usually plays with 7 defensive players at tournaments anyway.

It's probably going to be back to 5 at the back, 2 sitting in midfield and Kane, Foden and Bellingham filling the 3 attacking roles.

Yeh sorry, the context of the conversation seemed to be Rashford or Gordon. I meant I don't think he'll go at the expense of Rashford. I also don't think Rashford would be a starter, as he wasn't in the last tournament, but if it came down to one or the other I think he'll go Rashford.

He offers something that nobody else in the squad currently delivers. But I'm sure that, with a bit of training, someone else would be able to frown a bit and point at their own head.

Might do him good to have the summer off and spend some quality time with his twitter account.

The front 3, if everyone is fit, will clearly be Foden - Kane - Saka. I don’t think anyone thinks Rashford will be a starter. Palmer will be back up to Saka and it’s then a question of who is back up to Foden.

I personally would take the player who was England’s best forward at the last championship, who makes a habit of scoring against the best teams, as being the best impact bench option, especially as it will probably be Shaw at fullback. If instead we want someone to scurry up and down the wing tracking a full back then, yeah, Gordon is your guy.

Eze is in

looking increasingly likely he won’t make even the initial squad.

Good if true. He doesn’t deserve it

perhaps a summer off might do him the world of good. Given his body language this season, he’ll probably spend it sulking

We aren’t stacked at all at LW. It’s either play Foden out of position or play Gordon, who isn’t at the same level.

I’d prefer him not to go. I think a summer off will do him a lot of good and should also fire him up for next season. I suspect Southgate will want to take him though, as he is a great option to have and can produce a moment of magic in a close match.

You made some good points on Gordon and Foden. But what moment of magic can Rashford make? He is totally out of form and out of sort the entire season. Pick anyone from the mid-table teams, including playing out of position, would still be better option than Rashford.

Stupid question, he shouldn’t make United‘s squad for the cup final let alone England.
However should Southgate take another one of his favourites then hopefully he gets plenty of game time plays a blinder and some silly European club makes an offer Utd can’t refuse.

Only a weak minded clueless idiot would select him….

It would have been cruel for either Gordon or Bowen to miss out because of Southgate’s misplaced loyalty in him. Now it’s up to rashford to rebuild his form and if this isn’t enough of a kick up the arse, I don’t know what else could be.

Big news him missing out! Even though most would agree it’s a deserve omission.
