Shaqiri to Stoke city

Let's see how he does. The talent is certainly there but he failed to make an impact at Inter who are quite poor now and Bayern did not hesitate to let him go. Now obviously Stoke standards are much lower than Bayern standards but his failure at Inter points to the fact that he might not be that great actually.
It's all a bit odd with him. I'm a bit worried that his mentality has went downhill and that's why Inter wanted to get rid after only 6 months. I like him, or liked him. He should have left Bayern earlier, because after 18 months it was clear that he won't ever be a starter here. But his reaction, both on the pitch and in interviews was mind-boggling. He became arrogant, showed less and less determination and got worse. And it seems like he totally fecked up his new chance at Inter. Like you say, the talent is clearly there, so there has to be a reason why they stopped believing in him within a few months. I really hope, he fits well into the Premier League and becomes a good player again.

I think Mark Hughes is probably good at selling a club. He's a good manager with a good vision. No surprise he regularly seems to attract relatively high profile players. Stoke can probably pay competitive wages too.

The player rejected them twice maybe? At least once... clearly using it as a stepping stone in the hopes of bigger and better things. This could be a very good thing in the short term for Stoke or an awful mistake if the rumours of his attitude problems are in deed true.

Alpine Messi they said... more like Alpine Ravel Morrison

Balu probably has seen the player at Bayern more than I have but I've long been concerned about his attitude and workrate - there's a long line that forms to the rear of talents who squandered their careers due to lack of a proper work ethic or focus on improving

I also think his lack of pace (not acceleration) will be exposed in the Premiership

Fantastic signing from Stoke! Really like watching him play. I saw afellay against liverpool though and he was extremely average. Am I missing something?

No, in truth Affelay, Bojan and Shaqiri have been extremely average for a while. Bojan had a purple patch last year, but look at some of the clubs these teams have played for.

Edit:

For example Affelay was at Olympiakos and Bojan was at Ajax.

True. But if they start performing then Hughes deserves all the credit for turning their careers around. I doubt it though. Although Bojan did well last season before getting injured.

OK, so what's everyone's thoughts on this transfer?

I still can't quite work out why teams are so happy to get rid.

He's impressed me at both Basel and Inter.

Has he an attitude problem?

He impressed you at Inter? We can't have been watching the same team.

Olympiakos and Ajax are probably better teams than Stoke though.

I saw a few games, maybe 3 or 4, and he seemed to make quite a few nice explosive runs.

To be fair, wouldn't have been giving it my undivided attention due to it being a Serie A game.

Possibily I'm so deprived of wingers actually taking on their marker, that when it happens, I'm totally shocked.

Is he trying to smile in those pictures or what? Really disturbing face.

If it weren't for the increased spending power across the PL, Stoke would be prime candidates to do what I like to call a big old fecking Leeds.

I like the way he chose Stoke immediately and didn't wait best part of the window hoping for a better offer.............

Hats off to Mark Hughes, he's really killing the image everyone has of Stoke. Should be good fun watching them play this year

When Championship sides are prepared to pay £6m to even £12m for the likes of Gayle and Rhodes then Premier League side spending £12m on Swiss international isn't outrageous at all.

He went on a few nice runs for sure but largely it just masked ineffective and insipid performances. He's too inconsistent in games to make a meaningful impact. I fear Stoke fans will expect too much from him. He'll score a couple of good goals and get a few assists to probably win a few admirers from people who only see him on Match of The Day. Other than that I'm not expecting much from him.

What happened at Inter? Was he shite, or just never got a game?

No but they must now have their sights at europa qualification and strong domestic cup runs, I guess. I guess maybe the premier league money really has boosted the smaller sides.

Great signing if Sparky can keep his ego on a leash. I remember watching an interview with Xherdan while he was at Basel. He was wearing a diamond earing in each ear and was just ridiculously over-confident in his own abilities; real Lord Bendtner stuff. There's definitely talent there; pace, two-footed, decent shot on him... but he needs to be brought down to earth and to learn some humility. I still think he could make it at a big club.

That and their multi-billionaire owner

Good signing for Stoke makes you wonder why Inter got shot of him for, unless there hard up and need the money.

If he was United player he could have real chance in shaking Young off from the left wing spot. Talent is there but like it was said in this thread before, he needs careful management over his mentality however I doubt he'll pull 'Zakaria Bakkali' on his new club.

Really interested to see how he gets on. Their fans must be stoked...

If Bojan can rekindle his potential then so can Shaqiri.

If he fails then at least we'll still have strong backups.

Great signing for them really. He's still a young player with a huge potential and talent, but has been inconsistent in recent years and obviously at Bayern couldn't get consistent game time. Think he'll do really well at Stoke though, and Hughes will make him the main man like he is (or was?) for the Swiss national team.
