Shaqiri to Stoke city

Good signing by Stoke's standards but I've question marks about him. Never really bought into the hype. Yes he got the WC hat-trick but you're looking at a player who couldn't make it at Bayern, then couldn't make it at Inter and is now at Stoke.

What does that say about him? Always felt like if you needed someone to give it that extra 10% and make the difference when you need it most, he's not the guy.

Also imagine his ego is insane. But I like Stoke as a club, so power to them and if it works out.

If he gets his mind right he should do well in the PL. The league suits his style of play and might mask some of his weaknesses.

Effenberg . He was 23 when he left Bayern and signed for Fiorentina, after Fiorentina finished 12th both previous seasons. I'm sure he did it for the good of his career and money wasn't important at all. They also got relegated in his first season there and he left a year after.

What went wrong at Inter? they paid around 12 mill, he played for 5 months and now he's out the door - yet we slate Di Maria.

He comes across as a self-assured ego-tistic money grabber. He didn't even blink an eyelid at Stoke in January, and did the same again when the offer was accepted by Inter a month back - claims he was 'keeping his options open'... and now he has signed.

Surely bigger clubs than Stoke have steered clear for some strange reason.

They didn't, though. He was on loan there with an option/obligation to buy him now. Stoke agreed to pay that fee to Bayern instead.

Always been a good talent, albeit pretty overrated due to some good CL performances. I felt the move to Bayern came far too soon for him and he was competing for a staring spot against two world class players. He's still only 23 and if he impresses for Stoke over a few seasons, he will most likely get another chance at a big club. He was hardly going to turn down Bayern, but he would have been far better off taking a route similar to Xhaka, who looks destined for a big move in the next year or two.

Really? I can't find that anywhere. Every article on him says he moved to Inter on a four and a half year contract in January 2015.

Checked again and now I'm not so sure anymore. Some german and swiss articles I found claim that Bayern had to give their OK for the transfer to go through because of some contract clause loan stuff, some articles don't mention anything of the sort...

He definitely was on loan for 6 months with a clause that Inter had to buy him for 17m Euro at the beginning of this transfer window. I've no idea how they worked out the move to Stoke, but it seems like he was sold for the exact same price Bayern and Inter agreed on. So it could have made sense to cancel the deal between Bayern and Inter and let Stoke buy him directly from Bayern. Transfermarkt has it as two seperate deals in their database (17m Euro to Inter, then 17m Euro to Stoke) and they're usually well informed about something like that.

In the end, it doesn't really matter. Inter didn't want to keep him and were happy to let him leave without making money, that's obvious.

/edit:
just checked again, Bayern sold him for 15m. But I think Inter already paid 2m in January as a fee for the loan. I'm sure I read that overall number of 17m before. Then I guess, Inter just bought him July 1st for the remaining 15m and sold him to Stoke for 17m Euro now.

Good signing. Stoke is looking good, but so is many mid-tier (on paper at least..) clubs these days in the Premier League.

That's due to premier league tv rights that sold which is an est. £5.14 billion. So some of that is shared out between clubs, which shows the mid table teams are now splashing the cash abit to buy some decent players like Shaqiri to Stoke for 12m. Its good thing in a way, it just makes the league even more competitive. Great signing for Stoke, sure contenders for top 7.

I know some folks in football are worried about the sheer financial clout of the Premier League, but I gotta admit, the idea of having players like Shaqiri at midtable clubs is a bloody awesome one. I want a super strong league from top to (almost) bottom.

Oh, and I'm also glad we've already played them

Saw him a few times for Inter. Was pretty shit. But if Bojan can turn his career around then so can he.

I hope he does really well at Stoke with the exception of 2 games of course!

He's got a lot of talent and a few years ago I'm sure him playing for Stoke was about as likely as Gerrard playing for any team bar Liverpool!

Obviously it didn't work out with Bayern as they have so many similar players in attack but he's still got time to get back on track.

Stoke have one hell of a front line now though.

Suspended for the Spurs game because of a red card he recieved in a Coppa Italia game.

Bit ridiculous.

Xerdan Shaqiri signs for Stoke and becomes the first person ever born in Albania to end up somewhere worse.

:cool::D:D

Bit harsh on Albania I'd say being compared to Stoke

I think he will do well. Always impressed me when I've seen him play (probably around 30 times).

Was he not good at Inter or did Manchini just not give him a game?

Stoke will be pretty fun for a FIFA career mode now!

He was a massive disappointment whenever given a chance. I would say more miss than hit.

Charlie Adam was asked for a reaction to the signing of Shaqiri and for some reason basically just decided to give a chronology of the deal.

'SHAQIRI A SURPRISE'

Charlie Adam admits it was a big surprise to see Xherdan Shaqiri join Stoke City but says he has been impressed with the Swiss international so far.

Shaqiri completed a £12m switch to the Britannia Stadium from Inter Milan last month after a lengthy pursuit by manager Mark Hughes.

“Very surprising, coming from Inter Milan. He was at Bayern Munich after going there for big money from Basel," he told Sky Sports News HQ.

"Roberto Mancini went to Inter and never played him really and he's been frustrated there. I think we've been chasing him for a number of months. I think we tried to get him last January and it fell through and the manager has done a lot of homework and put a lot of hard work into getting him.

Interesting that he calls it a big money move from Basel to Bayern. We payed significantly less back then (I think 12m Euro) than Stoke did this summer (17m Euro?). Anyway, has he played for Stoke yet? How's he doing? I only saw parts of the game yesterday against England and thought he looked as bad as he has been in his last year at Bayern.

I hope he finds his form again and does well.

I'm there on Saturday, looking forward to seeing him for the first time since the WC. Surely he's still got the pace and power to impress in the PL?

Though I've no idea where it's all gone wrong for him at club level, haven't really followed his career.

All started to go wrong for him after he started dating Pique.

I think he has good burst but limited top end pace - he's like a dragster. But the Premiership having more space and players with pace will force the player to do more than rely on his left leg and occasional burst of acceleration. As I have mentioned before, I think he's plateau-ed in development largely due to laziness or arrogance

The Suisse NT need Shaqiri to fully realize his potential for them to make the jump to one of the elite NTs so I am hopeful he can develop at Stoke
