I'm of the opinion that 95 per cent of sex scenes serve no purpose and could be simply implied. They seldom show anything new about the characters and are far from realistic even in shows trying to be realistic. What's more, they are used to coerce actresses to get their tits out and while it might be nice to see Fit Hollywood Bird's tits, I'm not entitled to them and neither is the audience.

Perhaps thirty/fourty years ago porn was hard to come by so you'd need a free softcore porn scene to get off to, but now you can easily access much better stuff.

So what's your stance?

A) they're ok as is
B) we need to ban them outright
C) fewer but more meaningful sex scenes please
D) every tv show and movie should be nothing but sex scenes
E)boue

I want a blur of action scenes and full penetration until the movie just sort of ends.

my stance is i tend to stand up and then kind of hunch over and crank one out, straight onto the carpet. i used to be able to reach the coffee table but not for a number of years now. for some reason i just can’t get into a good flow if i stay seated on the sofa.

C.

For example sex scenes in Got were completely unnecessary bar few in the first season.

Carpet, coffee table and sofa. Someone is doing well in this Tory economy.

they can’t stop you entering hotel lobbies. well they can, but there’s always new, unsuspecting ones to go in to.

I regularly just fast-forward until a cock or cnut is out and then fall asleep afterwards. Don't think I've seen a film since 2006.

I reject the idea that sex scenes need to be 'necessary' or 'fulfill a purpose'. 'Being sexy' is purpose enough.

i recently watched this french piece, called “anal farmers” without the scenes, it would have just been 2 minutes of very wooden acting about crop failures.

Was this necessary?

I think they are fine but could be used better for character and story progression, sure. a) seems closest

Decent, I like farmers with an attention to detail. Was there much ploughing?

I always wonder why they don't do 2 or even 3 versions. E.g. X rated, 18 without sex and PG without sex and violence. Surely the editors can easily cut out these scenes. It would increase the audience by millions and give everyone the option. Sex scenes should be for when you are on your own or with your missis. You don't need that with family or friends.

I can't decide whether it was the porn or me growing up that ruined them for me. by ruining it I mean not giving a single feck when I see them these days. they seem so cheap and forced and I think in vast majority of cases I see them in bad movies anyway.

Because that costs money.

Not enough!

But seriously, I feel there is still way more gratuitous violence than gratuitous sex on film and TV. I can't say how many times I see some movie where the protagonist with a gun shoots his way through 20-30 "bad guys with guns". It's super unrealistic and I think it causes much more social harm than gratuitous sex because, at least in the US, it reinforces the stupid "good guy with a gun" myth. Super hero movies are sort of the same, reinforcing the idea that only through violence can problems be solved because of "bad guys". I think we could probably use some more sex-centric shows like The Deuce or Masters of Sex and less stuff about people using guns (or super powers - a gun metaphor) to solve problems.

This thread is useless. Let's hijack this into Top movie sex scenes ranked:

1. Original Sin
2. Wild Things
3. Basic Instinct

There's a Korean film called The Handmaiden. There are two lesbian sex scenes that are as close to porn as it gets and they go on forever. I watched it at a film festival and when the credits rolled and the lights turned on everyone was red in the face and didn't know where to look

So yeah, that's number one.

Fantastic film! And a great example of sex scenes that are integral to the plot.

They’re not as full on as Blue is the Warmest Colour. They are very exploitative though.

it’s also a great, great film, and a good example of a great film where the sex scenes add nothing.
