MELBOURNE (AFP) - The futures of Real Madrid stars Sergio Ramos and Cristiano Ronaldo are secure and both will remain at the club, vowed manager Rafael Benitez on Thursday.

Spain international Ramos has been linked with a move to Manchester United in a swap deal with Spanish goalkeeper David De Gea, but Benitez made it clear the defender was going nowhere.

Ahead of Madrid's match against Manchester City in the final match of the International Champions Cup in Melbourne on Friday, Benitez said: "It's very simple, De Gea is not our player so nothing to say about him. The update about Sergio Ramos is that he is our player and he's a key player for us.

"He's the captain and I would like to see him at the beginning of the season because I think he will be crucial for us in the season."

Reports have suggested that the 29-year-old Ramos is unsettled in the capital and that he was keen to move after the Spanish club failed to offer him an extension to his contract, which expires in 2017.

Ramos scored Real's injury-time equaliser in their Champions League final win over Atletico Madrid in 2014 and has made 445 appearances for the club since joining from Sevilla in 2005. He has 128 caps for Spain and was in the starting line-up when they won Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012.

But Benitez, who took over from Carlo Ancelotti in June, suggested otherwise.

"Yes, for me (he is) 100 per cent (staying). I insist that it is clear for both me and the club that Sergio will be here.

"Football is a curious world, but Sergio will be playing for us this season," he added. "I have a lot of respect for (Manchester United manager) Louis van Gaal, but Sergio will stay with us."

Croatia midfielder and teammate Luka Modric said Ramos was an important part of the team. He said: "We hope that he stays. He's a very important part of the team. He's our captain, our leader, both on and off the pitch and he's happy where he is. He's the best defender and he wants to stay at the club."

Benitez also dismissed speculation that his relationship with Portuguese captain Ronaldo were strained.

"Luckily, I have had the opportunity this week to spend quite a few days with him," noted the Spaniard, who has coached previously at Liverpool, Inter Milan and Valencia.

"And I can say that he's competitive, he likes to win, and for that reason he is the best in the world.

"I would like all players to have that desire to win and to compete. You've all seen him train today and I think his performance will be up to scratch.

"I talk to all the players a lot. I have had the opportunity to talk to him, too. We talked about football and yes, he is competitive.

"Seeing Ronaldo up close training, I can see that he's doing very well."

The End

Not that I think it will happen, but Benitez wouldn't have say, so he's only giving his opinion on what the board have hinted to him probably.

Ah, Ronaldo's now 'the best in the world', apparently. Poor old Rafa's obviously been poked with a stick.

Clearly Ramos is going to have to push a little harder (publicly?) if this is to happen. I still think it will...

I think its clear now Ramos isn't angling for a new contract. However RM are having the same stance as us. Issue is they can get De Gea on a free next year....

Ramos must hate having to play for Rafa. He's had some of the best coaches in the world, and apparently got on great with Ancelotti. To go from that to this clown.

"As per AS Manchester United have reached a ‘verbal agreement’ with Sergio Ramos, which discusses how much the Spaniard would earn, should he move to Old Trafford this summer.
"

I'm a little worried that we'd nailed our flag to the Ramos mast and decided not to bother with Otamendi.

Ronaldo is the best in the world in the eyes of many. This includes G.Neville, Ferdinand and myself.
I don't know if ex-teammates and United fans can really be counted on to be fair judges.

Messi is obviously the best player in the world, it's just debate for the sake of it to argue Ronaldo.

You forgot Ronaldo's mum.

I didn't know about that.

It's our opinion. That's your opinion. To each of us our opinions are "obvious".

Well most neutral people probably rate Messi above Ronaldo. Seems to me anyway.

Myself, I prefer Ronaldo but probably wouldn't if he had not played for United.

Most neutral people voted Ronaldo the better player in the last 2 years, or are all those ex-team mates as well?

Arguably a distinction between voting for a player who has had the best season as opposed to voting for a player who you regard as the best. You could vote for Ronaldo but still believe Messi is the greater talent.

As @PickledRed said. Ronaldo might have had the edge for a season or two but over a span of 5 years or their whole careers my interpretation is that more people rate Messi higher.

Since I rate Ronaldo higher myself, I am not too bothered if I'm wrong :)

I'm a little worried that we'd nailed our flag to the Ramos mast and decided not to bother with Otamendi.

You are assuming;

A - We are not still negotiating with Valncia over the price
B - We are interested in Otamendi

Otamendi and Ramos are 2 very different players, both in terms of achievement and playing styles. It would not surprise me if we are only in for one and not the other.

Doh...I just know this is going to end up with Ramos and Perez shagging beneath a massive Bein logo, using Rafa as a condom. "I never wanted to leave (honest, guv)!" "And I never wanted to sell you! Let's never fight again!"

Geez, thanks for the mental picture chief!

I'm not sure if we should go after Ramos and even Otamendi for big bucks. I say we just use them all for striker/forward (e.g. muller or/and pedro) and just outscore our opponents.

Im still at the feck off ramos stage..

Reading the ibra shite too is making me sweat in places I didnt know sweat.. two overrated feckers

who knows? There are millions of people who rate Ronaldo higher and millions who rate Messi higher. Wrong thread for this debate. My point was just that Rafa saying Ronaldo is the best player in the world doesn't mean he has been "poked" by anyone.

You just elevated the word 'overrated' to a complete new dimension. Please elaborate how Zlatan (i assume you mean Zlatan with ibra) with 340 goals thus far in his career is overrated. Stage is yours.

Zlatan hates LVG. There's no chance we'll be signing him.

Well there has certainly been an awful lot of smoke around us and Otamendi for there to be zero interest,

And Ramos at 29 who has been first choice at Madrid, under every coach there, has over 120 caps for Spain and been a key part in winning almost everything possible in his career so far. Overrated

Hope he headbutts Sterling the day, gets sent off and sticks the finger up at Rafa as he walks off the pitch.

They had a little trophy presentation at the end and Ramos as captain wasn't there to pick it up.
Instead it was Ronaldo and I'm guessing the longest serving Spanaird outside of Ramos in Arbeloa.
Probably nothing but it was strange to see
