Manchester United Set to Table £25m Bid For Barcelona Midfielder

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is preparing a £25 million bid for Barcelona’s Spanish international Sergio Busquets, amidst reports the tough tackling defensive midfielder is locked in a contractual dispute with the Catalan giants.
Recent reports in Spanish newspaper El Mundo Deportivo have indicated that during contract negotiations with the club, Busquets demanded wages closer to that of senior team mate Javier Mascherano, but was snubbed by the club.
The contractual dispute will ensure Busquets is willing to listen to any offers that are a mark-up on his current deal, and Ferguson is ready to make a move for the 22-year-old. With the perpetual injury problems of Owen Hargreaves and the advancing years of Paul Scholes, Ferguson views the Spaniard an ideal partner for prospect Anderson in the heart of United’s midfield.
Manchester United chief executive David Gill recently revealed that he is likely to be making just one signing in the January transfer window, with media speculation suggesting the player would be a central midfielder.
“There may be one signing and maybe we'd like to get a good player to the club,” Ferguson revealed. “But it's not easy in the present day climate and I've nothing definite to tell you because we're still assessing whoever's available and the difficulties in terms of who you'd bring in."
Recently linked with Sunderland’s Jordan Henderson, Ferguson may be more tempted to offer big money for a more experienced player, with Busquets suitably fitting the bill.
If the proposed move by United boss Sir Alex Ferguson happens, Busquets’ departure would make room for long-term transfer target Cesc Fabregas, a player Barcelona have been trailing for months.
Caughtoffside.com report that Pep Guardiola will be more willing to listen to offers for Busquets than restructure the wage system at the Nou Camp. Guardiola fears he may set a benchmark for other players to demand additional wages if he submits to Busquets’ demands, something Barcelona cannot afford following last season’s announcement of record losses at the club.
