Sergi Roberto

Giggs and Scholes were quality players but they weren't flair players. They were excellent technically but they were proper "English style" footballers. That's what I mean. You wouldn't see Giggs do a rainbow flick, would you? They were very much "simple" footballers.

Roberto isn't exactly Ronaldinho or even close. But he has been trained to play the Barcelona way and we need players who play the Manchester United way. Give me someone like Dele Alli or Ross Barkley over him anyday. Those guys might not be better technically but I gaurantee they would be better for United.

Not at all. I'm just saying they weren't flair players. They kept it simple and were "tough guys" who worked hard and got stuck in. That's what we need more of. That's why I always said Matic is perfect for us.

I disagree. He's absolutely a "Barca style" player. He wouldn't fit in here. We need more British players or experienced Premier League players. Matic and Lukaku know the league and that's why they look so good off the mark. If we're signing a backup CM, I would rather buy Barkley or even Joe Allen who I always rated.

Oh look, Jaybomb talking crap again...what a shock.

Big fan of Roberto. Apart from his quality which is obvious he showed a lot of bottle in important games last season (that winner again Psg, his run against Real). He is also very brave on the ball and not averse to taking on players. Would really love him in our midfield.

He would fit right into your midfield.

Fortunately for us United fans, our standards are much higher.

Well, I can guess you've seen like 0 minutes of Sergi Roberto playing football

The problem this guy has at getting minutes in Barcelona is that he's not a "fantasista", not some kind of Xavi/Iniesta compossed player with pause in his game and godlike ball control to get the ball glued to his foot.

Sergi Roberto is, in a way, a positional Barcelona player, but his better traits are that he's a direct player, fast and strong. He likes football being easy (get the ball deep, run to the other goal) and has one of the better engines in the Spanish league, he also has fuel in his tank to cross the whole field after a 92' clasico for example.

I don't think United should waste 40M on Sergi Roberto, your midfield is good enough to limit his role as a rotational player, and up front you still have Lingaard who can do what Sergi does when playing there, for 40M there has to be better options to find a sub for Valencia, but we're not talking about a tiki-taka player here, he could thrive in a fast and direct league like the PL

He's like a Puyol and Messi mix in that vid.

SIGN.

This is Ryan Giggs.

We've said it about Rio, Vida, Scholes, Keane and many more players over the last lot of years, but right now, in this current team, just how amazing would it be to have a prime Ryan Giggs? Currently the missing piece of the Jigsaw. Actually, I hope Martial can fill that role, certainly has the speed, dribbling skills and finishing. Hope he gains the character and attitude.

The only potential 'prime Ryan Giggs' in world football is at City, named Leroy Sane. The other arguably is Bale

How new is this high standard, about a page ago you were recommending Joe Allen for your team... A Liverpool reject I might add.

Sergi Roberto would displace Herrera from the team within a month if he joined United. At least as much workrate and more technically gifted.

I would be furious if the Paulinho transfer actually made him leave us though. He's my second favourite Barca player after Leo.

Within a month?

Yes, because he's better than Herrera.
Herrera was voted our best player last season. Roberto hasn't shown anywhere near enough consistency and quality to suggest he's flat out better than Herrera and would replace him within a month. Roberto is yet to establish himself as a midfielder.

He'd good for us imo

He was very good against Real when Barcelona destroyed them 4-0. Whenever he's played in midfield, he's been generally good lately.

I think he could be an upgrade on Herrera, albeit a slight one.

Remember when they first tried him at RB, he looked very impressive.

Sergi Roberto would be an excellent addition. Super intelligent, good vision, good on the ba, good defensively and 5ft 10. He'd fit in well with Jose's giants. Beefing up our midfield and right flank at the same. But I can't see this happen. Not when Don Balon are behind the rumour.....

Is 5'10 really 'giant'?

there certainly a reason why Barcelona wanted Hererra
We also wanted (and got) Paulinho and Gomes. Our board is stupid, we know that.

With all due respect, it's a lot easier to be voted player of the year for a 6th place United side than it is for a side which has Messi/Neymar/Suarez.

Roberto's game against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu when we won 0-4 was a great performance all around, he's shown time and time again that he can be excellent when he's given a run of games in midfield. He's been vital in clutch moments like his run which created Messi's winning goal against Madrid last season, or his goal against PSG.

He's a better player than Herrera, and 3 years younger too.

£40 million for a 25 year old guy who has not even played 100 la.liga games. No thank you. We have enough average players , don't want another lingard esque player. Better spend that money on seri or fabinho.

If he is so better than Herrera, how come barca were after herrera and have bought paulinho instead of giving sergi roberto chance.

He just told you.

Their board is awful lately.

They also let Thiago leave and didn't go for Asensio when he was available.

I don't think sergi roberto is better than Herrera. Just because a player plays for barca doesn't mean all their players are better. He is no thiago, neither he is asensio. He is average hardworking player who can put in a decent shift.

I don't see what he will bring to our side , yes he could be a solid back up player in midfield or in rb but no way can he replace herrera.

Fair enough.

I didn't even imply all their players were better. I just think Sergi Roberto could be better than Herrera. Though I will admit I'm not one of Herrera's biggest fans and think we'll need to upgrade that position in the future. I don't think there's a huge difference between the 2 either way. Both good, but will never be a top tier midfielder.

I think you're underrating Roberto by saying he's just an average hardworking player. Watch back the 0-4 Clasico at the Bernabeu.

Now this bulge between my legs I just got from that idea won't go away in a couple weeks, thank you

LOL.

Superficially there's something about his ruggedness off the ball that resembles Puyol and his running gait/direct style that looks like a right footed Messi.

It's uncanny.

Feck off is Sergio better, their midfield is the weakest of all the top sides yet their jack of all trades sub is better than Herrera?
Get the feck out of here. Herrera would sail into their midfield like nobodys business

When I see him, I can see the latest version of Fabregas at Arsenal.

Effective with the ball on his feet and fast. A very Premieresque midfielder.

Barca board may be stupid but sergi has been there for more than 6 seasons , if he was that good surely their managers (Enrique, Tata, pep, and Tito )would have made him their primary starter but none did. He couldn't even dislodge Andre gomes ffs.

I will honestly admit, I may have not seen sergi play week in week out but I have seen him on number of occasions and he never struck me a top draw or a player who can walk into our side and that to replace herrera.

I saw some saying sergi will walk into our side because we finished 6th, never heard something lame like that. That's why I said just because a player plays for barca doesn't mean he will automatically walk into.our side.

Jaybomb is either a wum or liverpool/city fan in disguise as no one is that feckin stupid giggs not a flair player!?

Herrera looked clueless against Madrid in the Supercup. Sergi Roberto tore them to shreds when he played midfield at the Bernabeu in our 0-4 win.

Go figure.

And part of the reason to why our midfield is so poor is precisely because Sergi never gets a run of games in that position.

Yeah Messi looked clueless against Juventus, Perisic and Icardi tore them a new one when they beat Juventus 3-1 or 2-1. So yeah Icardi is better than Messi.

So let me weigh in. The things I like about him are he has excellent close control, makes bursting runs whenever in space, can pass really well, decent tackler, has zero nerves (that run in the El Classico, winner against PSG), lots of stamina. He'll be better than all our other options at RB if Valencia is out. He'll actually contribute more than Valencia in the attack. In midfield, his passing and close control is way better than Herrera.

The only reason for not wanting him is our midfield is already packed and I think we'll continue playing 4231 most games. There's no point signing someone for 40m and putting him on the bench. We should only sign him if Jose thinks he is better than Valencia at RB.

Sergi Roberto would be a more than capable utility player to fill in at RB or LB or even in midfield. He's got terrific close control and he would be good on the break. With the inflation, 40m for a 25 year old who could give us depth and strengthen the squad. I don't think it's a bad investment at all. The guy at 25 is experienced at playing the big games. Barcelona would be foolish to let him go but United could actually pick up a really good player. We need to stop comparing him to Herrera. Herrera offers tenacity in midfield whereas Sergi with his close control offers more flair. Although, this would set Andreas Periera a step back and I was really hoping for him to get some game time.
