Sergej Milinkovic Savic

Everyone is aware that Serbia have not got it together at a major tournament, don't think anyone sensible will be expecting much from SMS in the World Cup especially considering he was not picked in qualification.

There are no many of those on CAF.

Sergej reminds me so much of Berbatov . All the silky touches and good finishes . I don't know if he will perform well in the English league but he will be a treat to watch . Having said since it has been pointed out clearly that he is mostly playing in exact similar position as Pogba hence its a no go . I know someone pointed out that he can play the right side attacking midfield too but then its the same case as Sanchez where we all thought he would play from the right since he played that position before and we know how it all went down. For all his flair I dont know if he has the stamina to survive the league since the speed and tackles will be quicker than the Italian league . This is my view from what I have seen from the highlight reels and an odd live game so not an expert analysis . Apart from that I don't think Matic has the legs to cover both him and Pogba which will leave our defense quite open .

Another factor is the Pobga . This move is maybe a replacement for Pogba or a motivator for him . But thing is Pogba likes to be the big boss in midfield so I don't think he will like another alpha in that territory . Not to forget his run ins with Sanchez literally coming inside and demanding balls from near Pogba position . This has all the ingredients of a potboiler . Come winter I wouldn't be surprised if Pogba and Mourinho have another stand off regarding all this and the last thing our team needs is a divided dressing room .

All in all I am intrigued by this move . It has its advantages and disadvantages . Its possible Sergej might storm the league and score crucial goals because he seems a better finisher than Pogba who tends to screw up a few of his shots in crucial moments . My personal choice for this position would have been Fekir . He is a good dribbler , shields the ball well , can play in midfield and score a good amount of goals but most importantly he is a confirmed right sided player which we need badly . Anyhow I wouldn't be complaining if we signed Sergej because our team needs more quality players in the squad and he has all the talent and temperament to be one of the best in business .Who knows maybe Pogba and him might click in the middle and we start getting a lot more goals from the midfield which would elevate our season .

Not saw a great deal of him but from what I’ve saw he has a similar build and finesse that Yaya Toure has. Might be a perfect fit for city so they might go after him. From what people are saying on here I hope we sign him. Can’t see why folk are getting too hung up if he’s similar to Pogba as if we could get Pogba to roam and Matic to sit, SMS could do a bit of both. I’m all for players of Pogba quality here at OT. I’m just hopeful we have the budget as surely our first two targets are at right wing and left back because Mata and Young are not quite first 11 regular standard nowadays for a full season.

Too expensive for one excellent season (in terms of goals, number of assists unimpressive) and one decent season. Big risk.

They're both midfielders. From what I read/hear Keita appears to be more highly rated.
It's personal opinion matter. I heard different thing. Heard about SMS way back when Serbie youth NT won, and did well in youth tournament and he was the star of the team. He's highly rated in Italy as having similar potential to Pogba, which in case they meet their promise, we're talking about being among the very best midfielders. Keita is more well known here firstly due to the Kante fever, where people look around for high energetic midfielders, and Keita is one of the best upcoming, and thought he would go for cheap.

But you wouldn’t compare Matic and Pogba would you? They do different jobs.
Alright, I thought they were both offensive minded. Is one of them a defensive midfielder? Because well rounded/attacking midfielders can be compared.

We should be aiming to have both of them operating ahead of Matic. The same way Kroos and Modric operate ahead of Casemiro at Real

Kroos and Modric have better defensive awareness IMO, and are quicker to get into right positions. Pogba and SMS would leave to much work to do for Matic. Swap Pogba for Herrera and i think the balance would be better.

Can only see the logic in buying him if we've given up on Pogba. Way too samey. And if we've given up on Pogba we're idiots.

I think a huge problem has been that whenever Pogba was injured or off form we were total crap. So having 2 of him wouldn't be a bad thing! Especially since we have tried him in multiple roles. 10 and Deep and box to box

I think we all agree our midfield lacks creativity and drive, SMS look like the perfect signing in that respect, who cares if he’s similar to Pogba, isn’t that a good thing? After all aren’t KDB and the two Silva’s similar types of players, and that seems to work.

People forget Kroos and Modric hard to learn to be more defensively aware. Pogba and SMS are just 23 and 24. They can learn. I dont buy this argument that you cant play two similar midfielder's together when a top anchoring midfielder is behind them

Indeed

In PES 2018, if you try the default 4-3-3 attacking formation, it's always an anchoring midfielder paired with 2 attacking midfielders. Based on that, I'd say a Matic, Pogba, Sergej midfield would work. PES never lies.

I agree as we've seen it plenty of times before, but what I'm not sure of his Jose's willingness to try it with these two. If we sign this guy and keep Pogba I'd be pleasantly surprised.

??

SMS is a box-to-box midfielder. He has a crazy work rate all around, specifically defensively which is where everything begins for him. He isn’t entitled to stay upfront like Pogba as he’s not an “attacking midfielder”.

...Pogba can’t play box-to-box effectively because it’s not his position. Box-to-box however is literally what SMS plays and would definitely fit alongside Matic with Pogba ahead of them both lol.

If we had casemiro operating behind them I wouldn’t have a doubt

We wouldn’t need a Casemiro. SMS plays box-to-box and his home is truly at CM/helping defensively where he then makes runs accordingly on the counter.

He isn’t another Pogba in that sense / he really does have the flexibility to be the perfect linkup CM. Would definitely start out alongside Matic or could start alongside Pogba if need be. That’s how good he is. Not this notion he’s not a box-to-box or whatever people are running with here :p

Is he better than Keita?

I've actually watched Keita play and not just on YouTube, which I think is what some are judging him on. He's really raw imo. Has good moments and really sloppy moments, if you just watched his YouTube video you'd think he was amazing, as I did when I first watched his YouTube video. A box to box kante that is equally good in attack is what I thought. He's not as impressive live.

It could be Fred operating behind them.

;)

Way I see it, Fred is brought in as Matic successor so we don’t have to rely on him like we are with Valencia till the very end. He’ll take Herrera’s starting spot regardless.

SMS comes if Fellaini fecks off (please do ) and Fred-Matic-SMS alternate 2 starting spots between the 3 of them game to game depending on opponent/tactics.

I don't understand why we can't have Savic,Pogba,Matic,Fred,Herrera at United next season?Surely competition for places can only be a good thing.

Possibly but we have an example that it can be a bad thing. Rashford became the most greedy player in the world after we signed Sanchez and he clearly doesn't want teammates playing in his position to score.

Check this out if you have time,

Overview
> plays in Lazio’s counter attacking system
> a deep lying target man
> works defensively to help the team gain control of the ball and then makes his runs up the field
> dominant on the ball/in battles and a high work rate/motor
> very hard to get the ball off him and just as talented with the ball at his feet as he is aerially
> makes the simple, efficient, impactful plays which you often times don’t see the likes of Pogba make who holds on the ball and end up losing / a quick thinker

This sounds like Jose giving a sporting director list of characteristics for a player he would like to have.

However, I am worried if this part is true.

Here’s what one user posted online:

Coming to his weaknesses, his decision making is questionable . He isn't completely press resistant. Often makes pathetic choices and his short passing ability is questionable. Perhaps why he won't be successful as an attacking midfielder .

And I wouldn't mind it if we didn't have Pogba alongside him. Who will control the tempo of the game with both of them? With the short passing ability questionable and not so press resisting that means we certainly won't have a control in the midfield against top teams. You are also asking from Savic too cover Pogba ass all day and run up and down the field which while he is probably able to do could make him not so efficient higher up the pitch.

In terms of balance, it doesn't look like the best combo imo.

We can.

People just make it seem like Herrera is for sure starting material when he simply isn’t (with all due respect) - at least for a club like United. Matic although is, is getting past it which you could see this season and he’ll only begin slowing down more now as Father Time catches up. Best to have his successor up and ready to ease the transition.

Pogba for sure starter. SMS-Matic-Fred would alternate the other 2 starting spots (CDM + C[D?]M) depending on the opponent and how we line up tactically. The one who’s left out becomes 1st priority sub and Herrera simply gets lesser games. And knowing United’s luck, we’ll have a couple injuries to them anyways so not like there’d be much time we’re they’re all up and healthy to pick and choose from hahah

Some on here seem to forget it’s a squad game, we need more than just a quality first 11.

You don't buy 80-90 million squad option. He is the first name on your team sheet. Like Pogba was for a year and a half, even when he didn't play well.

Hehehe :p

On paper sure I get why some might say it doesn’t seem like the most suitable combo but it’d definitely be an upgrade on what we have and there’s only one way for everyone to find out how it turns out and that’s if you get him first off.

Why don’t you? It’s not my money, I don’t care. City, Barca and Real pay loads for squad players, zero reason why we can’t.

...they have exceptional starting Xl’s, something we’re still trying to puzzle together since SAF’s departure. We’ll get there eventually

We have better than that. We have Matic. People on here also need to stop pretending Pogba is useless defensively. There is no way if we had two of him plus Matic in one midfield that we'd be overrun. This is a guy at Juve who in tandem with Marchisio/Vidal used to do all the defending for Pirlo. Its not like he operated in a free role with zero defensive responsibility like British pundits on tv constantly lie about.

Who? Name me one squad, rotational player that they paid close to 80-90 million that is quoted for Savic.

Even if that is true if Jose buys you for that amount you will certainly play in first 11 as it is the case with Lukaku, as it was with Pogba for a season and a half. Bad form or not.

Let's be clear, I don't mind going for Savic, I just think if we buy him he will have a certain place in the starting line up and questioning how he will work with Pogba.
