Search for the Chosen CM to bring balance to The Force...errr Formation

He came off the bench in their Europa League tie last week too. By the way, anyone got an idea why Nainggolan wasn't even selected for Brazil 2014?

No idea, guess the reason was just simply Wilmots rated his other options in midfield (Defour, Dembele, Fellaini, Witsel) higher as he was fine. But Nainggolan looks like a beast, the next Vidal?

He wasn't a regular starter for Roma untill Strootman got injured and he had De Bruyne, Witsel, Fellaini, Defour and Dembele as competition. He's done great in the absence of Strootman though and he'll be included from now on I assume.

I cannot see Real letting Modric go, he would be perfect for us.
We missed the boat on him I think.

I agree ravi just saying if every midfielder was available he'd be my first pick.

No more "good" players. Let's get the best and in this position that is Pogba.

We need to shop exclusively at the high end right now.

He would be my #1 pick as well....I wish SAF paid Levy the £40M he wanted for Modric because Modric would have been worth it to us....he is that good in the CM and is used to playing in the EPL in a 2 man midfield if needs be.
Gundogan would be my #2 choice....its a shame about his back injuries.

Nainggolan didn't start yesterday, did he, which is a surprise considering he looked like one of Roma's better players when I've watched him?

Nainggolan came on in the 2nd half and played really well...even the commentators were surprised he didnt start.
He is a fantastic box to box midfielder and was instrumental with Roma getting the draw, even with 10 men.

Pogba imo is not currently the best Kingminger. Yes he's a great prospect granted. But guys like Modric, Shweinsteiger, Verrati & Kroos would make a bigger impact for us right now.

I'n glad Koke is unobtainable. Too small, not mobile enough and would get bullied in the premier league. We need a 6ft plus, mobile player that is not going to get bullied out of it and is willing to get stuck in whilst also being able to play. Our equivalent of Matic essentially. Whether that is Schneiderlin or Pogba or Strootman i don't care, but adding a Spanish techno-midget will not help us.

Koke is almost 6ft what are you talking about?

I must be only one on here who thinks he is overrated
He could well be, I'm not the best judge of players. But he's a good package and is already playing in a possession based system, league adjusted and adds some leadership and drive to the midfield. That's why I think he's could be a good fit

5 ft 10... so a comfortable 6 inches smaller than Matic, 4 than Wanyama, 5 than Pogba, 2 than Schneiderlin, 3 than McCarthy, 4 than Henderson. He currently plays in a league where the slightest touch allows for a yellow card. Look at the way that Di Maria got clattered in the first half against Sunderland with no more than a talking to. He will get bullied imo. I would want a player that is not going to get bullied and that is able to get around the pitch making his presence felt but that would still be able to play plenty. Not saying that there are many of those players around mind.

Its not just about height though, even though I hear what your saying. Not too sure Koke would be bullied, hes not exactly a lightweight.

Schneiderlin would be a great option for us because he fits the bill as to exactly what we need in the midfield... a strong, box to box CM. With Strootman crocked and Vidal not 100% still, he is looking like a very solid option IMO.

I think Di Maria will be the right winger, with Memphis Depay as the left one so I fully agree with you. But for this season he certainly is an option in midfield so I just put him in there.

LvG loves multifunctional players so he can probably switch it around a little bit depending on the opponent. I guess it will all depend on who's leaving and who's not. The only fact that remains is indeed that he wants a BTB midfielder foremost. I'd be happy with Schneiderlin.

Ah I see, sorry I was already in to next season. :D I think for the last 11 games of this season we'll be seeing a combination of Ander/Blind/Herrera/Carrick making up our midfield though, with Di Maria/Januzaj/Young in the wide areas.

Yeah the box to box CM is the priority I would say, but I think if we are going to use a midfield 3 regularly we really need two CM additions to cover for form lapses and injuries. Schneiderlin ticks a lot of boxes, I don't think he'll ever be regarded as world class or anything, but he plenty of strings to his bow to be a valuable asset to the team.

After all the depressing player links over the last 24 hours this is more like it! All action true box to box CM, he'd give us the bite we lack and is good in possession and can drive the ball out of midfield.

The Italian media must write more transfer stories about us than they do about any other club.

Like who?

On topic, I'm beginning to like Granit Xhaka more and more, especially as he would fit into van Gaal's ideas.

Nainggolan or Bender would be fantastic. I like the midfielders we get linked with in the last few days

What's he like? Is he box to box?

Yeah, I think so. From what I've seen he's able to make things happen, while he also works hard defensively. He's good at keeping possession and in general a good passer. His physicality is another asset. He's just 22 years old and seems to be a leader for Gladbach. I've said it in the Strootman thread, he might be the closest thing to what van Gaal likes in Strootman.

Naingolan loves his slide tackles doesnt he? I can see him picking a lot of cards when he first moves to the Prem.

Ings, Berahino, Kenedy and Lars Bender.

Still a little raw and reckless but he has a lot of the qualities I imagine LvG would like to hone.

Oh okay, missed that, I can see why that's not inspiring. Bender wouldn't be that bad though.

I would have agreed with that last season and he's reckless, yes, but he's been very consistent and he has played well for Gladbach. Some toughness in combination with skill wouldn't be too bad IMO. I'd prefer him to Bender, too.

I just think Lars Bender lacks too much in his overall game, I've never been overly impressed with him as more than a basic CM.

He certainly has leadership and a physical presence in midfield the times I have seen him this season, plus his passing is good, I can see where the Schnweinsteiger comparisons come from, my worry is temperament but I'd pick him over Bender as well.

Another midfield target who has been linked with a move to Old Trafford for some time is Borussia Dortmund's Ilkay Gundogan. The 24-year-old's contract expires in 2016 and reports from Germany suggest he is ready to move.

According to SportBild, Gundogan won't be signing a new deal and is also set to snub advances from Liverpool and Arsenal. Instead he will accept an offer from United, with Dortmund likely to take £20m for the deal.

I still say Blind - Herrera - AdM could be a great midfield 3.
Although I would not say no to someone in the vein of Koke or Gündogan.

I wouldn't mind mentioned MF3 considering we upgrade our defense,

New RB-------XXXX------Rojo----Shaw

If at all we are after MF, i love to see Schneiderlin here, PL proven, physical strong, technically flawless, good work rate.

-----------------DDG----------------
Rafael/RW-----New defender----Rojo-----Shaw
----------Schneiderlin----Blind------------
Januzaj--------Mata/Herrera----------Di Maria
------------------Rooney/NS----------------

We have obviously no hope of getting Pogba or Koke so realistically

Hector Herrera, Nainggolan, Bender, Carvalho, De Jong, Schneiderlin, Gundogan

One isn't enogh - Schneiderlin AND Gundogan should getable.

How's his back doing these days? Any sign of any problems relating to it? I don't even have a clue how his form is to be honest...

No recurrences, he had a minor muscle injury that kept him out a couple of games not long after he came back which is common after a lengthy lay-off. Form-wise he's getting back to his best, the passing and ability on the ball in tight spaces was still there but over the last few games you can see his engine returning as he regains full match fitness.
