I haven't seen enough of Longstaff to decide - but if Carrick and OGS first sign AWB, Maguire and James - and then decide Longstaff is the player they want….well then I assume they have seen something worth signing.
Already been found out with Matic: press him. That doesn't work for McTominay because he turns the ball over a lot faster. I'm curious what you think McTominay's big weakness is? I don't see it.
If in Ole's opinion, the only central midfielder he wants is Longstaff, given that we have already lost Herrera and Fellaini, I am sure this is happening.

In our current situation - what we should do is offload Lukaku ASAP - even if it means accepting £5-6 million less than we hoped for and simply get a midfielder in. If Carrick and OGS want Longstaff and are convinced he is what we need … well pay the £50 million - he will still look a bargain compared to Fred.

Are we having the 2.0 Carrick-Fletcher combo? If so i trust them to be a good base for our attacking players to do their things. The problem is that our attacking players need to be a lot more consistent and productive in front of goal.
What we are lacking the most important thing in our midfield is the basic. Communication, tracking your players, & not ball watching.
It’s nice to have quality but if you got quality but not the basic then the midfield will always look poorly organised. Only Mctominay looks like a midfielder in our team who understands the basic.
That’s why many people are referring to how Liverpool can do so well with such a non talented with no top quality technique because they know the basic.
Signing this guy could potentially a massive upgrade of Matic who has been ball watching midfielder since last season.

I don't get it. We are playing a 2 man midfield one of them is Pogba.. we then have Mctominay which you would hope Is the other starter as he's on form and progressing well. We still have Fred, Andreas and Matic. Surely we dont need Longstaff. If we bought him in and got rid of Matic then fine but not as extra depth.

Whilst he can't start every game, Gomes is ready made for that role. I hope we use him. Would much prefer to get Longstaff so Matic doesn't get anywhere near the team.

Whatever you think of them, and I agree to a point, they are here to stay. Andreas got a new contract this summer and Fred has 4 years left on his. Matic is not good enough and we all can see his decline.
For a 2 man midfield, the numbers we have for those 2 positions are good. Not needing another player for depth is what I said. If it's to replace Matic then great.
Pogba, Mctominay, Longstaff, Andreas, and Fred would be good quality and good numbers.
They are very different players though, I think we would get an AM to replace Pogba.

Agreed - so my vote is to get Longstaff for £35m or whatever and use Gomes as an attacking midfielder. Its going to drive me crazy when Mata/Lingard start ahead of him regularly if Ole does that. I can see it happening though.
