I know.

Rooney was being hyped at 14 and broke into the side at 16. He is so great that he was unable to secure an England cap or get Newcastle games in hi career so far. He is like the next Jack Wilshere yeah? 9 league games for a shit team at 21 and he is the next big thing. Doesn't quite strike me as Cesc Fabregas here does he?

Have you seen him play in a game? Have majority of posters in this thread? Probably not. The negativity about this lad is ridiculous. To play centre mid at such a young age is exceptional, he’s clearly got a massive amount of potential. If city or some one else bought him or linked to him everyone in here who knows nothing about him or seen him play would all be going mad cos we didn’t. If we get him- let’s support him and get behind him.

Too late, they've all lost the plot.

Yup - remember the rumours about £65 million for Wan Bissaka ? And he of course ended up costing a bit less. Newcastle don't want to sell Longstaff - so of course they will try to scare United off. But at the end of the day, if Longstaff tells Newcastle he wants to go - he will go. And the price will probably be someplace around £30-35 million

Which would still be an insane price for someone with less than 10 PL appearances to his name. Game's gone.

Appearances really aren't THAT important though are they.

If you've looked good in the 10 games you've played then that's enough to say you're good enough for this league.

It's not like he's had 5 minute cameos and looked average.

Is it enough? There's hundreds of young players who've had a good 10 match run - very few are good enough for United or worth £35m

Sure people will be moaning as well if we get him a year after for £70-80m when he had a full good season under his belt, and I'm sure there will be questions asked if he's a one season wonder

Newcastle were always going to demand £50m+ after we leaked to the papers that we were willing to pay up £25m for him. He'll end up moving for closer to £25m.

Once again we’ve fecked up another summer window. At least two senior CM’s should have been signed to add the quality we’ve lacked.

Longstaff should be an additional signing, brought in as a prospect.

The very thought that this lad is being targeted as a first 11 player is absolute lunacy.

As things stand, Matic, Lingard, Mata, Jones and Young are all going to be key players again next season when not one of them should be anywhere near the team.

But don’t worry guys an average winger from the Championship with mediocre stats and a rookie with about a dozen appearances, who’s recovering from a serious knee injury will save us.

It is not ‘harder’ to play in central midfield at a young age, as opposed to any other position. I wouldn’t be put off by him having only broken through now though, it happens. Some players just don’t get the chance earlier.

I hope we don't sign him. All the geniuses in this thread moan that our scouts don't spot talent and sign players before they are mega stars - and then here we are looking to sign a player after his first 9 games and the redcafe geniuses don't like it, 'he isn't highly thought of enough' 'if Newcastle will accept 25m then he isn't good enough'

I don’t see the point in signing him unless it’s with a view to being in the first eleven, sooner rather than later. I’ve not seen him play, but a good player is a good player - him having limited appearances in the league doesn’t really matter.

Were Mata and Jones key players last season? And we’ve signed a Young replacement so I don’t see how he figures particularly prominently next season.

Just because you/we are judging him solely off a ten match run that doesn't mean the club are.

Our scouts also had all Longstaff's time at youth level, Kilmarnock and Blackpool to assess his potential before he broke into the Newcastle first team.

I don't think he's played double figures for Newcastle so the £50M fee is surely where we walk away, this is a weird transfer given the midfield needs a bit of proven quality added to replace Herrera and Matic.

This.

So we are flying out tomorrow and if we are really after this guy then we have failed to signed him despite that the season ended two months ago. From the outside it is a litlle bit difficult to understand.

Yeah if he was our target from the beginning, this deal should have been done long ago. But I think this is still easily doable as none of the other top clubs seem to be interested in him.

Not really, he's more of a DLP.
Ok, Matic replacement then. I hope he's not seen as the solution for our midfield woes by himself. We need more established players and good squad players that's going to challenge them. He fits into the second category.

He will probably rotate with Matic next season if we don't sell him, apparently Inter are interested him. We need an AM regardless if Pogba stays or goes.

We have not even bid for him yet and now they are saying no less than 50million. This for a player with only 9 games played. Ridiculous, we should be going for Partey or Ceballos.

Forget what they say. They won't be able to make the price high. The loss of Rafa will also make him determined to leave. He has like a year and a half left on his current if reports are to believed and he isn't even fit at the moment. They will be lucky to get anything above half what they got for Ayoze Perez in straight cash. I bet they know it too.

Just a strange signing if we go for him. Especially if we end up paying silly money. We could get players like Tielemans, Cabellos and Olmo, who are around the same age, for around the same amount of money. Also these guys have played a lot more first team games.

If City signed a guy for 50 M's after 9 Prem games I would die of laughter. Imagine buying Rashford for the market striker rate based off his break out under Van Gaal. It's nonsensical because it's literally a handful of games. You would think Rashford was the next Owen because he scored 8 in 11 and 3 years later cannot get higher than 13 seasonal goals. Its an absurd price at 50 mill. 25 mill and I have no issue as that's pocket change and worth a punt. City bought Bernado feckin Silva for 40 odd mill and he is world class.

I know nothing about Longstaff but are he and Tielemans a similar playing style?
Tielemans is a playmaking #8 that isn't good off the ball hence being poor defensively. He also isn't very mobile at all.

Longstaff from the small sample size is very mobile and has shown he could play as the #6 or #8 and is described as having amazing endurance to boot. People within the Newcastle setup have likened him to Michael Carrick due to his composure and passing ability from a deeper role.

I'd say Longstaff would be the better longterm signing due to being more well rounded.

my worry is: is he good enough to compete agains the best midfielders in the PL, in Europe? I admit I haven't seen enough of him to be sure eitehr wy but I do know there are guys out there who can and who have... we can't base everything on planning for the future

Replacing Pogba with this lad is like replacing Ronaldo with Valencia all over again.

Have we not been preparing a bid since the start of summer?

Preparing FC

I'm going to throw my hat in the ring and say we get him and it will be for 35+5 mill in appearance bonus.

It's difficult to say due to the small sample size. But his performances against City and Chelsea were better than i've ever seen from Matic playing for us against comparable opposition.

United will have a dossier on him from all the way back to his youth days I suspect. Marcel Bout is someone that must've given the thumbs up to this potential deal which bodes well for the ability of the lad.

I don't think he's a Pogba replacement at all. I'm pretty confident we'll sign a more established CM in this window too.

He obviously wouldn't be replacing Pogba though. He would (at worst) be replacing Herrera or (at best) be challenging and eventually replacing Matic.
