Cantona and Schmeichel were world class. Both had made hundreds of appearances and won major trophies before we signed them.
And both Bruce and Phelan were captains of a very good Norwich at the time.

He wasn't considered world class though, especially after his troubles in France. Leeds basically signed him without any challenge.
He's extremely highly rated, Longstaff. Newcastle coaches and fans seem to rate him highly and he's been very impressive in the brief Premier league apps so far.
I feel many of our fans should wind their neck in. The same fans that complain about this sort of deal would have complained when Spurs got Deli Ali, asking why we didn't go for him.
I think it's splitting hairs to say that but low profile players many had hardly seen before they came to us back then included the likes of Solskjaer, Irwin, Cantona, Schmeichel, Kanchelskis, Sharpe, Bruce, Phelan, Vidic, Evra etc. They didn't turn out too bad.
I know the quality he and Papin had at the time. But when he arrived in England, no one considered him a world class player which was my point. A player with potential yes, world class no.You are mixing the quality of the player and his attitude, he was considered as well as Papin but he was a jackass and had to exile himself from France.

France wasn't the hotbed of talent at the time like it is now either.Cantona wasn't a youngster when he went to England, he wasn't a player with potential but a french international in his prime and one of the best french players.
Francis denied that..
Very encouraging reviews about him from the Newcastle fans themselves. I like what i was reading. Like Daniel James, definitely worth a punt at over 20m odd
We’re neither a team that’s prepared to challenge for the title, nor a European giant as things stand; we can’t act like signing one or two players (who will walk straight into the first team) will fix the problems we have. We’ve tried that, it doesn’t work.
A signing like this one, and with Dan James and with AWB too shows that we’re focusing more on a project. I don’t get the entitlement some fans have towards challenging and winning. We need to start doing things properly and rebuilding in the right way. Clearly we’ve chosen to focus on young talent that we can nurture, and I’m all for that.
Francis gave a long winded interview and denied that was the case. Francis only took him as a favour to the then NT coach Michel Platini who wanted to put Cantona in the shop window. Francis and Platini knew eachother well from their playing days.Cantona never retracted.
Where was that then? Curious.Francis gave a long winded interview and denied that was the case. Francis only took him as a favour to the then NT coach Michel Platini who wanted to put Cantona in the shop window. Francis and Platini knew eachother well from their playing days.
If these are the type of signings we will be making, the only thing we will challenge for is 8th place.
Looks to have good technical ability too.Hard working players is exactly what Ole need. Cause it effects the others players. Maybe all players work hard all season, instead of 3 months for a new manager.
Still remember the cafe mood when we signed Carrick for 16m .
Not saying he is next carrick but just tells how we feel means feck all.

People keep making lazy comparisons with Mctominay but he's a different type of player.
Every transfer thread is a Cantona thread. Unless it's a Ronaldo thread.Am I on a Cantona or Longstaff thread?
He is exactly the type of players we should go for this summer - affordable, young with good potential, and won't be tempted to join Real Madrid in future.
If we were not linked to this guy would anyone on here be saying, "I tell you who we should sign? ..Sean Longstaff"

that's why clubs actually pay scouts. If we were not linked to this guy would anyone on here be saying, "I tell you who we should sign? ..Sean Longstaff"
You will never win anything with kids.......

Why’s that?
Our scouts should be on commission only.that's why clubs actually pay scouts.
Carrick had made over 160 PL before we signed him. So if we were sceptical about him, imagine how sceptical we should be about a 21 year old who has made fewer than 10 PL appearances.Still remember the cafe mood when we signed Carrick for 16m .

I know money has gone mad in football, but £20m is still £20m. You can’t make too many of those bets without success and expect to be competitive.Very encouraging reviews about him from the Newcastle fans themselves. I like what i was reading. We have a history, you know, for our best player joining or wanting to join Real Madrid in the past...
