Not to burst anyone's bubble, but we really don't know if Ole and his staff can develop young players at the moment. It's one thing to say that the club has developed players post-Fergie, but it really hasn't. So I don't have too much belief in them anymore or at least currently. Knowing that Ole and staff, and/or the club has at least identified this method (again) of developing young talents, we should hope that the coaching staff in the club and the first team staff know what/how to develop these players. At least McKenna and Carrick give me some long term belief. With that said, are people ready to give Ole and staff the proper time to develop these players? Three years is plenty of time to see significant progress.
You are mixing the quality of the player and his attitude, he was considered as well as Papin but he was a jackass and had to exile himself from France.
Forum goes from wildly overrating our youngsters, to wanting Ravel back, to wanting to crap on every single player we’re linked to in some way. Some fans should try a tad harder at being positive.
From the little I’ve seen of Longstaff, he’s a very classy player, certainly not the finished article and maybe never a world class player, but lad is going to be a very good player. Seems to have the knack of finding space, very down to earth, hard working. He’d be an exceptional signing at quoted prices, seeing how Rice is going to be 70 million plus. I can see a lot of the comparisons with Carrick in him, not exactly like for like, but many similarities. Carrick was never world class, but certainly was a vital cog in United’s very successful period.
We have had a long period of poor high profile transfers, Longstaff and James are players that excite me and won’t be desperate to join Madrid after a couple of seasons!

We’ve tried to do this post Ferguson and been criticised regardless. That our transfer policy has shifted, as is being claimed largely by those in media, is bobbins.
Martial, Shaw, Bailly, Lindelof and Dalot are all evidence of trying to bring in young players before they kick on. Fred, too. Then you’ve got the likes of Lukaku and Schneiderlin, who were both young when signed, initially described as the sorts of players that move to <insertrivalteamhere> and fit in immediately. When they don’t work out, apparently we just haven’t tried to bring in young players with something to prove. Well, we have.
So bringing in James, Wan-Bissaka and (potentially) Longstaff isn’t exclusively reflective of what ‘Ferguson used to do’. Not really.
I know the quality he and Papin had at the time. But when he arrived in England, no one considered him a world class player which was my point. A player with potential yes, world class no.
Cantona wasn't a youngster when he went to England, he wasn't a player with potential but a french international in his prime and one of the best french players.
France wasn't the hotbed of talent at the time like it is now either.
Cantona was a player that hadn't realised his full potential at the time and that potential had to be unlocked. Howard Wilkinson at Leeds created the environment to unlock his full potential before he arrived at Leeds. He came to England with his career in shambles and he was close to not realising the potential he had.
He is exactly the type of players we should go for this summer - affordable, young with good potential, and won't be tempted to join Real Madrid in future.

Francis gave a long winded interview and denied that was the case. Francis only took him as a favour to the then NT coach Michel Platini who wanted to put Cantona in the shop window. Francis and Platini knew eachother well from their playing days.

Hard working players is exactly what Ole need. Cause it effects the others players. Maybe all players work hard all season, instead of 3 months for a new manager.

This. Not trying to be smart after the fact but I was raging back when Spurs got him for about 5 million when west ham were relegated. I was convinced he was exactly what we needed in midfield at the time.
Was so happy when we got him and Chelsea effectively paid for him with 15 million they had to pay us for John Obi Mikel.
Indeed, hard working players can be anything from Kanté to a technical attacker. So it’s just dumb to compare 2 players just because they are hard working midfielders. My point was the team looked lazy most of last season, and I believe Ole is looking at players like Longstaff for that reason.

I don't think the goal is winning though. I'd be very happy to return to the UCL. With these kind of signings we'll have a very good mix of experience and youth in about 3 years.
Don't think anybody really wanted Rice or Dier when they were linked to us. But this Longstaff guy sounds a really interesting player and wouldn't cost anything near 50-60M unlike the other two. Really worth a punt i think

I know money has gone mad in football, but £20m is still £20m. You can’t make too many of those bets without success and expect to be competitive.
he's asking why you think he wouldn't be tempted to join Madrid. If he develops into a top class player and they come calling you are just assuming he wouldn't join Madrid. Just because he is from the UK? Beckham, Owen, Woodgate, McManaman, Bale all went to Madrid. Could be argued that DM isn't a sexy position and thus someone like Perez wouldn't find him appealing even if becomes a quality player.
