Lies. Matic is one injury away from being shot behind a barn.

I used to rate Matic very highly but he's as done as Sanchez. Even if Longstaff is overhyped as you say, I seriously doubt he wouldn't be an upgrade over a player turned zombie.

I’d be stunned if you’ve watched Sean Longstaff play for more than 45 minutes. Yet you know he’s better than Matic?

I haven't. And I'm not doubting your statement that he's overhyped. But I don't think someone who's finished as a Premier League player would be Newcastle's best player.
Your opinion on Longstaff might be spot on. It's your assessment of Matic I disagree with.

If we did this deal are we likely to sign a second cm ? Fred matic pogba mctom longstaff ... really feels like we need another player even ignoring quality of what we have.

Unless we switch to a double pivot and have a front 4 with martial Alexis rashford Mata lingard Greenwood James lukaku with gomes and chong giving cover. You can see go some extent why we need to sell to buy, it is a bloated squad.

Interesting thread on Longstaff. The distance covered and pressures stats the most interesting.

Need to watch more of him but I've got a feeling he'd be really good.

Having watched his Youtube videos the last couple days, which is a very limited and biased sample size, I'm really impressed with his abilities. Good in the tackle, impressive passing range, reads the game well, and is very mobile with a lot of upside potential. Given the current instability at Newcastle I think he should be very attainable for 25m with Newcastle probably asking for add ons.

Yep. These are the sort of signings Fergie used to make and would turn them into world class players.

I'm glad we're trying now instead of waiting another season until he explodes and then is chased by the rest of the league for a crazy fee.

my mate at work, who is a Newcastle fan, just said this verbatim to me. Fully concur.

Watching his YouTube videos reminds me of Matic. Hard to get excited about it but manager should be allowed to bring in the players he wants I suppose.

Which players are you thinking of that we signed with 8 PL appearances at age 21 who went on to become world class players?

Oh yes, Fergie was damn good at such buys. I was getting worried we were gradually turning into a galactico chasing club like Real or PSG. As much as it has worked for them, I think it is important for a Club to stay true to its own DNA. Fergie always found the right balance between mostly buying players with potential and the right 'galacticos'.

My only issue with thut potential signing is it is going to make no difference whatsoever to us this season. Matic will still be stinking the gaff out for 90% of the games. Add to that, we've lost Herrera and could potentially replace Pogba with Bruno Fernandes and our midfield is looking much weaker than last season. Which is terrifying

Really? People could easily have seen him in their Chelsea, City, Wolves or Spurs games last season, let alone any of the ones against lesser lights. It's not like he was playing in a low profile league against low profile teams, even a casual PL fan could have caught him in a few games. Not that it would be enough to judge him properly off anyway but still.

I think it's splitting hairs to say that but low profile players many had hardly seen before they came to us back then included the likes of Solskjaer, Irwin, Cantona, Schmeichel, Kanchelskis, Sharpe, Bruce, Phelan, Vidic, Evra etc. They didn't turn out too bad.

I disagree. I think this chap will be (along with Pogba) our most important CM. His positional sense, composure and passing from a deeper role will be a upgrade on what we currently have and he's gonna improve further. His performance against City was proof that he can bang with the best in the land.

Cantona and Schmeichel were world class. Both had made hundreds of appearances and won major trophies before we signed them.

Was Cantona considered world class before he signed for Leeds? Because if I remember correctly he even spent a short time at Sheffield Wednesday hoping to get a contract after his troubles in France.

No. He went on to become world class for United, which was the question.

I don't remember Fergie signing any players of the profile and experience of Longstaff who went on to be world class for us. I'm not saying he can't do well for us, but he really isn't a "typical Fergie signing" like people are making out.

What's the point of spending money on this lad? We need someone who can walk in our first team, this guy is at a similar level to McTominay and neither of them should be anywhere near the first 11 of a team who wants to challenge for the title or that fancies itself a European giant.

Walked away from Wednesday when Trevor Francis wanted him to have a second trial.

The point was that Leeds signed a troubled player whose career looked in shambles and he turned into a catalyst for them by helping them win the league. In that case the manager was Howard Wilkinson and not Fergie of course.

He's extremely highly rated, Longstaff. Newcastle coaches and fans seem to rate him highly and he's been very impressive in the brief Premier league apps so far.

I feel many of our fans should wind their neck in. The same fans that complain about this sort of deal would have complained when Spurs got Deli Ali, asking why we didn't go for him.

Cantona was seen as one of the best french players.

Agreed.

Plenty of the younger fans have a holier than thou attitude that think they're better than everybody else. Only the top stars are good enough.

That's the sort of mentality that's got us buying names rather than actual players we need.

He was seen as a brilliant troublemaker that hardly anyone dared touch...there were quite a few epsiodes in France :) He was at the time referred to as L'enfant Terrible - the terrible child

We’re neither a team that’s prepared to challenge for the title, nor a European giant as things stand; we can’t act like signing one or two players (who will walk straight into the first team) will fix the problems we have. We’ve tried that, it doesn’t work.

A signing like this one, and with Dan James and with AWB too shows that we’re focusing more on a project. I don’t get the entitlement some fans have towards challenging and winning. We need to start doing things properly and rebuilding in the right way. Clearly we’ve chosen to focus on young talent that we can nurture, and I’m all for that.
