It was really only Ole who truly chose to keep picking him. He didn't actually play under Mourinho that often (from memory he only started about 10 league games with a couple of those in the defence when Jose was trying to make a point after not being bought yet another defender), and Rangnick didn't really have any other options. This season he's played decently well so ETH has kept him in the first team for now (helped by Casemiro not getting going yet), but it's very early days. If it's still the same after a few months then that'll be a different story. Personally I doubt it but I'd love for him to prove me wrong by actually playing consistently well.
Mourinho literally brought him up from the academy and tipped him for great things. Only reason he wasn't starting week in week out was because Fellaini was here and did everything better. He was Mourinho's favourite.

Mourinho talked him up publicly but hardly showed that when it came to playing him. Most of the time he wasn't even on the bench, let alone starting. Personally I feel the public backing was just Jose responding to the 'Mourinho doesn't bring through kids' criticism, combined with that clip that went somewhat viral of Fergie telling Mourinho about McTominay.

Regardless though, I was responding to somebody saying (and it's a comment that others have made quite often) about multiple managers utilising Scott as their first choice. In reality Ole is the only one who has really chosen to do that.

Omonia Nicosia 2:3 Man Utd
Came into the game and immediately terrified me. Chaotic bad.

How many matches has McTominay started in?

And how many of those matches have we actually dominated/controlled the game?

We CANNOT control a game with someone of his calibre in the middle.
How many did we win ?

McTominay and Bruno start nearly every game and people still wonder why we are shit.

Did you notice the run of games we won ?
McTominay played well in those games.
We were showing a bit of form and consistency.
The ball burst against Man City, who are levels above us.
That's obvious. We knew that already.
Let's try and make some positive comments where appropriate, rather than repeating the usual criticisms.

I swear he didn't touch Gray at all for the tackle which he got booked for?!

The ref only thought to book him after he saw that Gray was rolling around dramatically.

We got worse when he came on. Think he made one pass that i can remember in just over 10 mins of football

He did catch him, not as bad a Gray made it out but definitely a foul and given it was high foot too, a yellow was deserved.

Impressive how he did manage to pick up a yellow card again despite only being on the pitch for a short period. Scott is really trying to be top of the yellow card list

Customary yellow card. He is a very poor tackler in the main, he’s either dangerous with it or just climbs on opponents and pulls them down.

Just out of curiosity, did you post anything positive when he had his run of good games?

You're making it seem better than it was. He attempted 3 passes and had a 33% pass success, so 1 complete pass in 10 minutes. Full details are needed.

Man Utd 1:0 Omonia Nicosia
Saved us from a huge embarrassment.

Saved us from a huge embarrassment.

And himself after his penultimate effort. Really nice feet for the goal and really he should always be looking to shoot around the box, he strikes the ball sweetly.

That was genuinely great feet from him, excellent first touch and then great movement to work a shot

Good composed finish. I'll forget about his decision to shoot and blaze the ball over with 2 men free to his right.

Important thing is he got the winner, so well played.

Decent first shot, awful NFL field goal effort and a winner. Fair play.

Obviously not brought on to score. At the time I honestly felt we needed something different in attacking areas, so was surprised it was only him and we opted not to use our one remaining sub.

I have imagined the scenario that McT plays as CF in absence of Martial, rather than Ronaldo. It can’t be worse I think.

Yep, that shot was awful with the options he had.

I think he overthought it instead of just trusting his instincts to shoot, the whole movement for that effort was just out of rhythm, shown by the over extension and twist on the follow through.

Great timing for goal but his stupid fouls deep in oppo area when we press are pissing me off. Can he do simple pressing without foul?

I always maintain he is more natural and comfortable in the attacking third than defensive. Was surprised to see ETH essentially having Scott and Casemiro fighting for a single spot, since for me Casemiro is exactly the kind of player who I would want alongside McTominay, allowing Scott to play his more natural box to box game.

I’ve yet to see anything to change my mind that our best midfield is Casemiro - McTominay - Eriksen

Aye, he's much better as a B2B player.

That would require dropping Bruno which I am totally on board with, but hasn't been part of ETH's plan.
