Jesus . he was horrendous . keep losing every ball and one after another foul. we were lucky referee was blind and didn't saw his hand ball.

Defensively solid and important in keeping a clean sheet. But replace him with a ball playing CM/DM and we're probably not in a position where we even need that kind of player/performance in the first place.

He is shite, they should have had a pen x 3 with him deciding to juggle it.

And when it comes to playing football, he hides EVERYTIME.

Lobs a couple of tackles in though and heads the ball away once or twice and he's ok.

As an outsider, I've been impressed with Mctominay in both this game and the Liverpool match.

Been your best midfielder in both for me.
It's unlucky for him that Ten Hag doesn't really ever have a "box 2 box midfielder that can get stuck in as well" role in his sides, but you never know how Ten Hag adjusts things to work with what he's got, and he doesn't have a De Jong type at this moment.

Thought he was good today.

He’s going to get much more game time than expected due to height alone. We’re a small team and it’s a factor when defending whether we like it or not.

He's not the player for our midfield if we want to control games at all. Can't pass, won't show for passes. Is definitely a fighter however.

He was superb today.

This place is a joke with people ignoring what's happening in front of their eyes in their rush to stick the foot in on him. 5.9 average rating is absolutely ridiculous.

I thought he was good. Challenging for everything, get around second balls, making loads of clearances and generally just being a nuisance.

Not great on the ball but barely anybody was.

Thats where the balance of him and Eriksen comes in. Felt Eriksen was class in the first half but very quiet in the second which, as a result, meant we suffered on the ball.

You came into say that when the lad had a solid game for us? Jesus!
You mean talk about an instance that should've led to an obvious pk and probable goal for SH based on ddg and penalties? Yeah my bad let's overlook Mctominay offering nothing going forward and instead applaud basic defending in midfield yay. No wonder people are happy with this shit we just watched

I thought he was great. Which is strange, since he can't really pass forward. He has his moments passing. But his game is more than that, and his dirty work cannot go unnoticed. Fair play to him.

He did well for what he's capable of and helped us get a gritty win. The issue is that I think if we want to move past gritty wins and become more dominant then he's not going to be up to it, for all the good he did we still had no control of the game.

There’s not much he can do to win over some of the supporters at this point.
He’s been crucial today, I don’t know if we’re winning the game without him, few important clearances from their crosses, read the game well, passed the ball well.

If it was Rodri or Fabinho or someone people would be praising what a great player they are.

He’s been excellent these past two matches, well done Scott.

I thought he was good considering he wasn’t given a lot of help until Casemiro came on. I hope we keep him and don’t sell him on. We’re going to need him throughout the season.

Superb? Come on. He did ok, but on the ball he is still very poor.

8 while not on the ball. 4 while on the ball. Or 9/3.

It wasn't a pen.

His arm isn't in an unnatural position, the distance between him and Adams was too small... And it might have been outside the box anyway.

He ran around but as always was not really showing any impetus to get the ball and do anything.

Bang average player.

Definitely did a good job defensively today, playing even deeper than usual meant he was actually in the right place to win the aerial duels and make challenges, rather than being ran past and jogging back as we've seen before.

Has limited passing, but today was solid defensively. Won the ball a few times when Southampton looked dangerous. Well played today.

Yep, you've definitely got an agenda. As you were.....

I mean come on, such grudging, condescending bullshit. Being in the right place(something he has struggled with in the past) at the right time, working as defensive group is important part of his role, and he did it well. Now maybe he is just a stopgap until Casemiro is up to pace and the football will evolve but he has done a great job for his manager for the last 2 games.

Rodri and fabinho help to control games for their clubs, mctominay doesn't. Southampton were all over us and that should be a big warning sign for us. When we needed a goal he can't help us get on the front foot, if we need to defend he's just alright.

Ofcourse he looked good today because we were defending in our own half for most of the 2nd half. Anything to do with the ball at his feet, he's rubbish at it. If we going to play like the underdog team every game, defending deep, he's our man.

Fantastic performance today. If not for him Soton would have steamrolled through our midfield today. People moaning on here that he doesn't make Hollywood Gerrard-esque passes need to understand not every game is made for those players.

When those two have a great game it consists of goals (Rodri, more so), creativity, midfield control, dominance, and quality passing. Their great performances are not solely based on their defensive contribution, which is what it is for McTominay. In the end, midfielders need to be able to do both, especially at the level we want to be at. He had a good game defensively, but we can't forget that McTominay was a key part of us not being able to control the midfield, also.

Obviously asked by ETH to play a defensive role, which isn’t his strength, but he did a very solid job of it. It would be unfair to criticise him for a lack of attacking input when he was practically a 3rd CB for much of the match

He was far better on the ball than that.

It's just lazy, agenda driven nonsense that people were spouting before he even touched the ball today. The lad played the dirty role behind two lightweight attacking midfielders and for some reason he's getting the blame for our lack of footballing in the midfield.

He did his job, often as one man facing 3 especially in that second half. How about pointing fingers at the lads who went missing for large parts instead of picking the easy target every time?

22 accurate passes for a United central midfielder against Southampton, 76% pass completion.

Sorry, but I can't praise that.

Exactly. Jesus Christ people are so desperate to pump him up after any little decent game. But any pointing out the obvious flaws and it becomes "agenda"

Without McT in midfield it might be possible to control the midfield so all the tackles, headers and batteling his does wouldnt be needed. Picked up his third yellow already. Missed out on being top of the leagues yellow card table last year i believe. Might win it this year.

Decent game by Scott standards but if we want more dominating performances he is not the player for us

He won the ball over and over again - it's not his fault that the 5 attacking players in our side generally were awful
