Funny, reminds me of what we used to hear about Lingard. "Great without the ball"

No wonder we struggle to do anything with the ball when we're training academy lads to play better without it

I think thats unfair on Lingard. He is good on the ball and he would be good enough for a top premier league team if he played every week like he did for West Ham last season. But he has never managed that at United

McTominay is not good enough, not unless he has the absolute best midfielders playing next to him and he just has a job to do winning the ball in the air and ball winning using his strength

Do we think his middle finger nose scratching was on purpose during his post match interview?
Looked blatant to me!

I genuinely don’t think it was intentional. Wouldn’t go along with how well he spoke. He was clearly touching his nose a lot just as a bit of awkwardness.

McTominay gives his all? Let me guess, united DNA and all that Brexit crap right? Did you notice how the lazy McTominay strolled back several times while city were on the counter? Did you forgive him for his lazy non contribution for City's first goal?

This myth that he gives his all is needs to stop when the evidence points to the contrary often. Pogba has contributed more to this club than McTominay, it's not even close. Brexit players like McTominay and Maguire are getting us nowhere. I'll say one thing, the useless chap didn't get his customary yellow today. Matic would've served us better in wresting control of the ball from deep

Suprised me that he didnt get a yellow, he was mad when Cancello tried to do a trick (the moment he shouted at Cancello near the corner flag) so i fully expected him to get a yellow card after that. The 'revenge' and show that he has passion type of yellow. McT isnt good enough so he needs to make up with plays that get him a yellow card. Same for Maguire, i saw a tweet about Maguire that he is the most booked player in the league since joining Manchester United.

Fully agree about Pogba, Pogba has been top scorer and top assists some seasons. Doesnt matter though, fans have been influenced by the media into hating Pogba and giving our English and Acedemy players more leeway.

He's a squad player, should never be a starter for club with any iota of ambition. He's the sort you bring on when the game is done and dusted.

They are all s**t.

He's been starting in midfield for 2-3 years straight yet we have been poor during that time, too. He's just not good enough, same with Fred. Just compare him to the actual top midfielders or our former midfielders, the gap is huge. Same goes for Fred. In a few years time, we look back and think how the hell could they field these 2 and expect a great midfield performance

I agree. They can't protect the back 4 and cannot initiate attacks. What is the point of them.

Nobody likes you, Toby.

I actually think McTominay's weakness is off the ball. Always hiding and losing his marker in defense. He is at his best when he can run with the ball, in a box-to-box role, most notably against Leeds every time. But yeah, he isn't good enough to be starting for United but it's nothing new.
That's what she said.

I also agree about the off the ball comment.

Terrible decision making over time got us here. How Ole couldn't see that is beyond me
Well the club wouldn't give Jose Maguire, so he left us with these. Think he is having a good laugh, especially now he had a lucky escape with Maguire as well. Rumoured Jose didn't want Fred anyway.

This is Scott McTominay, and has always been Scott McTominay. How he snuck out of the academy and into our first team is a mystery in the first place. In his defence, we have barely had anyone else in the last 3 years to play instead, but he is not even close to being good enough. He doesn’t look after the ball nearly well enough for a central midfielder, and his defensive contributions are massively overstated too, he is just a fouling machine.

No one understood why we bought Fred for 50m. Maguire would have been a blessing in disguise but Ole got him, and now we stuck with some bad decisions as well

Wasn't it rumoured City were after Fred, well the club couldn't have that could they. Jose might have been good for Maguire, as you say it was Ole instead who couldn't coach a defence to save his life.

Mind boggling that McTominay has featured prominently under three managers. One can forgive Ralf, the interim manager, and could even
forgive José, but Ole cannot be forgiven for believing in McTominay.

He fell lucky being parachuted into the side by Jose because he is tall, because that is all there is.

The other options not being good enough to force him out is not on McTominay.

His positioning and passing is just terrible. At least Fred is mobile and covers space well.

Maguire + Lindelof + McTominay is why we lose games.

Bailly + Varane + New DM would fix all our defensive issues. And allow our offensive players more freedom.
The Offensive players have lots of freedom.
They don't have to track back.

Good to see Keane calling him out yesterday. He too often gets a free pass while Fred gets slaughtered.
Nine 6/10 performances and one Captain America level performance every ten games just isn't good enough.

One game in 10 he has a very good game, the rest are a mixture of bang average mixed in with a couple of totally crap… yesterday was the latter.
Squad player as cover for injuries is his true level. Lucky boy to be a Man United regular. It can’t go on another season.

Can’t believe how many games McTominay has started for United considering his level, sums up the club’s decline.

I can't believe how many United fans still think that he is "good squad option".

Indeed. There’s actually no such thing, unless on the rare chance you have exceptional luck with injuries. For years I’ve read that players like Scott or Lingard are okay because they are squad players, and I’ve also seen them starting every week in these spells. If a player isn’t good enough to compete for a starting place, they aren’t good enough to be at the club. The only way you should be condemned to second choice is if you have a generational talent ahead of you, or are too old/young to play with regularity. Anything less and you are simply not good enough. ‘Squad players’ start, and they start a lot too. If we have agreed that these players are ‘not good enough to start’ - then we simply have a weaker team than we should.

Feel sorry for that lad honestly. Never good enough to be a DM for man UtD. In a SAF team he would be the type to come in to carry out a particular task when needed and would do it well as he very good at following instructions.

Yeah City have good squad options - like Gundogan or Gabriel Jesus where they’re pretty much as good as the first team. McTominay would be significantly worse than a world-class DM so what important games would he play instead of that DM that he would fit fine?

This./

He wouldn’t make the bench for the elite sides & he’d be making the bench for sides outside of those. It’s this weird, we only need [insert here] to transform into a top side syndrome. The facts are a number of the players we rely on need to be on the fringes/gone if we are to become a top team again. Maybe Simeone will take him at Atletico after his high praise.

More like nine 4/10 performances and one 6/10, with some absolute stinkers and 1 or 2 top performances over the whole season.

This. The club keep throwing players under the bus because they don’t want to spend money and can’t get their recruitment right.

cannot wait for the day we have a matchday squad where this lad is nowhere near it.

no where near good enough to come off the bench let alone start, there isn't a scenario where he would be needed.. people may argue holding on in a game but with the reckless fouls he makes not a chance. thankfully he will be replaced over the next year or two not only by new signings but the likes of hannibal/garner will outplace him for minutes

Totally agree. We come on here to debate, share and challenge views some of which will never change no matter what. Just look at Neville and how strong his influence is on hordes of United supporters no matter how misplaced and downright wrong some of his views are. This world is all about perception, you build an idea or image that resonates with certain people and the truth won't matter to them.

The clubs powerful PR machine has built this perception of McTominay being the fearless British warrior/leader the team desperately needs and has been longing for since the days of Keane and Robson before him. Except he's everything they weren't. He's the antithesis of anything you'd want starting week in week out in a club vying for top honors

True. Both of them were world class footballers while McTominay would not get into any decent sides at all.

Not his best game, he struggled against City's crafty midfielders. He has still had a few MOTM awards this season and he is a crucial member of the squad.

Nah that's too far the other way. Mentally he's good. He does put a shift in and isn't afraid of a big game.

He has limitations but to say he's the antithesis of what we want is a bit much.

He played every week for half a season. Then Bruno arrived. I guess west ham suits him.

Not playing in his best position.

People who don't see that says alot.

Please take this weak piss troll attempt somewhere else.
It was a genuine post. Everyone knows Scott's limitations, he is a robust combative midfielder but he couldn"t get near the ball. He might not fit into a perfect Utd midfield and if Utd sign a new midfield then he will probably still play regularly as a squad player.

What a weird thing to take out of all context

If he played every week at the level he played for West Ham, not the level he played for us where he was poor. Read

Apart from his height and occasional good shot on goal I don't see anything in him to be bench option let alone starter for United.

He's below average player who mastered art of making himself useful when he's everything but that.
