It’s not even about a team aiming for the top.

Let’s do a comparison between holding midfielders in the PL:

1) Man City:

2) Liverpool: Fabinho

3) Chelsea: Kante

4) Arsenal: Partey

5) Spurs: Hojbjerg

7) West Ham: Rice

8) Wolves: Moutinho / Neves

9) Brighton: Bissouma

10) Crystal Palace: Kouyate

11) Villa: McGinn

Literally every single team has a better DM than McTominay. He’s lower mid-table quality at best.

Romeu, Phillips and Ndidi are also far far better than him, you could debate Doucoure also. So there's 14/15 teams.

Fred's position is always awful. The first thing he will do is vacate space in the middle of the pitch running towards the ball even if other players are already there.

That's how it works. One midfielder presses whilst the other takes up the right position to cover and get the loose pass. Fred is doing his job, McTominay isn't.

He's defending for their goals was criminal yesterday.

True, I just stopped at Villa because the next team is Brentford and I have no idea who their midfield is

ETH surely would have been watching recent games and noticed McT doing his usual hiding and being terribly bad at positioning.

There's no way he can start next season.

He surely must be up there with our worst players in decades who have played at least 150 games for the club. Absolutely no ability to play as a midfielder at this level. Unfortunately can see him hanging around for at least 5 more years, someone will have to take Lingard's spot after all.

He needs to be loaned next season in hope he can salvage some value to sell on, rangers or celtic would be ideal destination.

I will write off next season and ten hag if this guy is still getting regular game time next season.
Yeah, because loaning a ‘first team’ player really worked for Lingard and Van de Beek. Loans are fairly good for young inexperienced players to get minutes, McTominay needs to just be sold for whatever we can get for him.

It did work for lingard, his value went up a lot but ole wasted the chance to get a decent fee for him, in no way did I say loan mctominay in hope he can come back and be valuable united player, the intention would be to boost his value a bit and move him on

I say it again, he will end up CF for a league one or championship side sooner or later
He's not as bad as that. He's kind of got that look of a player who will end up at West Ham.

Fred is a poor player but 2x the player McTominay is.

Anyone trying to equate the two doesn't have a clue.

I've always thought he gets a rough time from our fanbase but after yesterday that was it for me. All he does is foul, offers hardly anything. When he does get the ball it's always a five yard sideways pass.

Somewhat about time that his hardworking shtick, which in reality amounts to doing a whole lot of nothing more than fouling, is running thin with fans.

He might get protected by talking heads/pundits but he can't hide from the viewing public the way he hides in possession.

Caicedo ran circles around him showing how a true PL holding midfielder should look like.

Fletcher is probably going to be in his ear telling him that Mctominay is brilliant and deserves a chance.

Haha.
He probably will be a first team regular next season. I believe that managers pick him because he works hard, doesn't give up and follows their orders. Basically, he has a good attitude.
The problem fans have with him is that he does not possess the skill set to run the midfield of a team aiming for the top.
He doesn't though. He works harder than Pogba and Matic, but that's very very different than actually working hard. There's the odd big match where he really digs in but in the vast majority of matches he's actually quite lazy.

Certainly not good enough for west ham. They are pushing for Europe. Bottom half club at most for him and even they could do better.

Seems to be a Fellaini situation, everyone sees he is shit yet starts games
In fairness fellaini could be useful, rescued points for us in games on quite a few occasions and knew how to play dirty when it was needed, mctominay is often a ghost on the pitch

If we put McTominay up for sale for £20m not a single team in the league would buy him.

If we put him up for loan even on his relatively modest wages he'd be lucky to get an offer.

Never did it for me even when people kept telling me he was a belter. Hope he is part of the clearout.

This has long since just become another McTominay performance discussion thread, so merging into the main one.

I wouldn't mind if they just paid off his contract in the morning or let him go to a championship club for 2 million. He seems like a decent person but he's just not premier league quality and never will be. I'd actually be delighted this summer if we got in three good young hungry midfielders and a winger. Once the center midfield is sorted I think the defense will come together.

The realistic possibility of Mctominay still being a starter for United again next season is giving me a lot of worry. So, so vital that we sign 2 midfielders this summer but no idea who we are getting.

If we sign a proper DM it could be Bruno-Fred-New DM

Mctominay isnt top4 quality, He is a hardworking player that could stand out in a Burnley team.

He is one of the main reasons our defence always gets exposed and has to defend 1v1s 10 times in every match.

I cant believe he is still being considered as an important part of the team for next season.

Absolutely atrocious player he legitimately shouldn't even get a sniff at any top club.

Hilarious that people defend him, he's absolutely horrific. Burnley or Bournemouth level player, Ten hag should look to sell him before anyone else.

oh please. If he goes hiding in games it should be easy to give one example. All I got was situation where it was borderline at best that he should show for the ball.

He does it so much that Tifo did a whole video on McTominay hiding:

Whether he intentionally hides from the ball because he knows he's not good enough to receive a pass under pressure, or whether he's simply so bad with his off the ball movement and positioning that he ends up effectively hiding, the result is the same.

Trying to get this out of the Ten Hag thread and into here where it belongs. @Tarrou @UNITED ACADEMY @Grylte

The reason why people said he goes hiding is because he's not giving himself as an option to receive a pass, but instead he moved into the spot where opposition players were blocking the passing path. There were spaces there where he could move into to provide better passing options but he didn't because he didn't want to take responsibility. As a midfielder myself I had done this before when I was younger for one of the example when suddenly I felt like I was about to have cramp if I make another pass. So instead of giving my defenders an option, I purposely went hiding to spot where the passing path was blocked so my team-mate won't pass the ball to me.

I think he’s just poor at positioning. I’ve watched all our games and that’s what I think. If you think otherwise that’s fine. And by all means, show some examples and I’ll take a look.

It is bad positioning. McTominay's spacial awareness is truly dreadful. I've seen it during Scotland matches. This is why Steve Clarke plays him in a back three. That way he gets more space.

Is spacial awareness trainable? Yes. McTominay strikes me as a player who takes advice of board and is receptive. Character wise, McTominay is a manager's dream.

I hope ETH can improve him.

People who say stuff like "hiding" are just dumbing it down and trivialising it. No professional footballer "hides" from the ball. Even to suggest such a thing borders on insane.

McT didn’t even ask the for a pass, that shows he didn’t want to receive the ball. He was well aware of what he was doing.

Poor positioning is normally more in defensive situation not in that situation that shown in the clip. Poor positioning in that situation probably should have been him not knowing that he’s in poor position but he still asking for a pass in that poor position.

Why didn’t he ask for a pass then? May be you can give me a different answer for that.

BUT he is not, never should have been and never will be first team quality. Bin him to the reserves then...I don't care.

Thanks, this video perfectly explains my point. No idea why you thought it was a video about him hiding. I’ll directly quote the video.

“The problem Is not really Scott McTominay. Scott McTominay is a good footballer being played in the wrong position”

I wouldn’t play that pass to Scott as he isn’t a player who can receive the ball on the half-turn. I don’t think it’s clear the pass is on. If you think otherwise that’s okay, we’ll just agree to disagree.

You've said in as many words that he does. The only difference is whether you see it as a) intentional or b) shit positioning. That's just splitting hairs over language used to describe the same thing and to me it makes zero difference.

yes I think it’s shit positioning, that’s my entire point

it’s not splitting hairs over language, these are very different things
