He’s come leaps and bounds from what anyone would’ve expected from him at the star of the season. Apart from the lapse in judgement for Chelsea’s goal j thought he did pretty well to keep Hazard in check and cover spaces in front of the back 4. Hope he keeps progressing at this alarmingly good rate!

Watching live in the ground it felt like the biggest error was from Valencia playing him onside when he did not need to break the defensive line. Replays only confirmed that. I suppose McTominay could have tracked without any downside, but the goal comes about because of Valencia’s positioning primarily. It’s his error.

Mou on him post match was very positive. Even highlighted his lack of goals and assists, but said not to worry because he knows he can do that, that we saw it in pre season, and that he has wanted him to focus on the basics so far.

I was at the match too and concurr! All the defence stepped up and Valencia dropped which caused the massive gap for Willian to walz in to!

Was heavily at fault for their goal but overall very good game from him and hopefully he learns a lot from his mistake today.

Truth be told, at this stage - he doesn't really offer something Ander wouldn't for the most part as regards following specific instructions, so it's quite puzzling that the latter was noticeably sidelined by José ever since we signed Matić, despite being one of our better performers last season, revisionism aside.
I don’t think he’s been particularly sidelined. He just started the season out of the XI and has nothing to suggest that he deserved to be in it when he’s got the chance.

It’s bit frustrating that you’re called revisionist for not thinking Herrera was anything special last season, as there were plenty of us that felt that way at the time. In the player of year awards thread, I posted this:

Wouldn't have been in my top four or five even, but I do love his passion. Still needs to improve a lot if he wants to be a central figure in a side seriously competing for league and Champions League titles.

In my average ratings this season, I only have De Gea, Shaw, Martial and Rooney lower of players who have started a decent amount of games. I like Herrera, seems like a great guy, but his season this year being recognised as arguably the best of any of our players is symptomatic of our dire inconsistency and where we currently find ourselves.

Edit: Obviously, he's been better than I've given him credit for game by game, but I don't think he has quite been one of our best.

For a player with such limited experience with the first team, he's done remarkably well. Ok, so he had a large hand in the goal but apart from that did his job today and pretty much muzzled Hazard.

Still haven't seen anything from this kid that would make anyone want to write him off. He has an air of confidence about him and looks quite tenacious for a young lad.. pulled off some decent turns on the ball, but it's more his all winning which I quite like.. he's tactically sound for a young lad. Early days but it looks promising for him to have a career here.

A Mourinho player. Dependable, workman like and loyal to the cause. He does what Mourinho tells him. Good lad.

People forget that Sir Alex always had players who fit the dependable workmanlike mould around too. We played Phil Neville in midfield at times!
Occasionally Nicky Butt played ahead of Paul Scholes in big games. It's a team game, so having players who are willing to play a supporting role allows a team to be greater than the sum of it's parts.

I think in a transfer world where every half decent player now costs over 30-40 million it is imperative that clubs develop players from their own academy who can come in and do a job when needed , if Herrera leaves now then Mctominay can take his place in the squad and United can use that 30-40 million for some other position. I really like his interviews though, he appears confident but not brash which is a good sign

Don't think he is totally to blame for the goal as there was a few mistakes there ... but maybe what we ought to be looking at is that it didn't play on his mind and he was better after it.

Young player having a stormer and getting praised, where have I seen this before.

Until he has 2-3 poor games in a row then it's "he was never obviously going to make it here".

I like him, we can mould him into something good. Think it's fantastic the way Jose is handling him and the fact that he is from our academy.

The kid’s got guts. Twice in a week that’s been shown. Being a United player isn’t just about talent, it’s about having the confidence to show that talent when needed. McTominay stood up to be counted today. He’s growing in stature game by game.

Playing better in the first team than he was in the reserves.. The step up hasn't been a problem at all thus far...

Even if he makes a mistake, i can understand why, when you watch some senior players and what they do during the game, you cant help it but scratch your head. Hope JM realizes the benefit in putting your trust in young player promoted within.

He had the worst defensive numbers of any midfielder on the pitch (including the defensive powerhouse that is Paul Pogba) so this defensive masterclass narrative is weird.

In addition to that he was largely anonymous in an offensive sense. Overall, it wasn't an abysmal performance or anything but it certainly doesn't warrant the 'new superstar' hype on here.

No one said he was a superstar. He can be a good player.

If you analyse his performance by statistics, i.e. like a computer, then you can say he had an average performance.

If you analyse his performance by watching the game, taking all the factors into account, such he's just had the biggest 2 games of his entire career, just broken into the first team, asked to do very specific things with very little margin for error, i.e. not like a computer, but like a human being then it's fairly obvious had a very good game.

Good temperament about him, which is the key thing in a young player, you can't coach that. The tactical awareness and technical aspects of the game can be coached but attitude, temperament, never-say-die attitude, humility, are all qualities that one should already have before even being considered to play for United. He's got those attributes it seems. Watch this space I suppose, we need to keep supporting him and encouraging him.

In the last two pages alone people have claimed he can be a new Carrick, Matic or even Roy Keane for us.

He's done okay but nowhere near enough to warrant that sort of praise.

It's only one or two people, but yeah I agree, he has a lot to do.
