I think he looks great. I'd already be willing to take a chance on him in the summer.

Glad you’re aboard the Lewis Cook bandwagon too; he’d be a very Ferguson-esque signing and IMO can/will grow into one of the most influencial midfielders in the league. His passing range is impressive.

You know what is funny and pathetic at the same time?

We sign Jose as manager, you get all these anti Jose fans who say he does not promote youth, blah, blah, blah and that Pep loves youth, blah blah blah.

Now he plays our youth on a regular basis, yet, the same idiots who complained about Jose, now they trash our youth players for their mistakes and performances.

Pathetic and disgraceful. True fans support youth through good and bad games to boost their confidence and help them develop.

McTominay is a top prospect and I hope he becomes a legend with us.

Well said sir, couldn’t agree more

Great post. Couldn’t have said it better!

Moaners will be moaners. One thing is guaranteed with these moaners, nothing is ever right.

He grew throughout the game and is making himself a viable option. Fellaini’s injury has given him a great chance to establish himself.

I can't believe what i am reading here. McTominay has carried himself well with his sudden promotion into the first team. Posters laying into him should be ashamed of themselves. Whatever happened to supporting our own academy youths, what happened to patience?

Seems like fans are only interested in players who can dribble and run with the ball. Bloody hell, and do fans have blinkers on or what? More that half of the shit posted here is rubbish I wonder if fans are blind or stupid, or likely both.

Caf is becoming a horrid place, honestly. I don't really understand the need for writing off a youth at this point. Judging by the quality of posts and opinions here, perhaps it'd be similarly appropriate write off most of the posters here as useless bums to society.

I am aboard! Not only is his passing decent, his close control and ability to hold off pressing players is evident. At 20/1 he's already looking the real deal. Bournemouth are constantly outnumbered in the middle due to them playing 2 CMs and most others playing 3 yet he never really looks out of his depth.

Yup indeed

6 out of 10 vs Cloggersfield. Seems like a Henderson type player.

Not sure why you need both him and Matic at home against relegation fodder. It needed a more progressive midfielder, like Pogba.

Moaners are making this forum more and more unbearable, I'm so close to using the ignore function (never had to use it to date). I thought he was good, I like him.

Surprised by the lack of praise in this thread as this kid looks made for United.

Wow! Here I was. Thinking the Lingard situation would have taught our fans a lesson In doubting Jose's ability to spot potential.

I'm confused, what are needed from him?

Stepovers? flicks? Zidane Roulette? What is it? I'm confused with the demands of Caf.

EDIT:
He was impressive last night, I hardly found any misplaced pass, or loss of possession for a kid coming through the first team. A very mature performance and that is how you play football.

Yeah its amazing how high a pass completion a player can have when they play against a midfield content on giving you all the time in the world and you pick the simple pass every single time. At what point did a complete and utter lack of ambition and vision become a good thing?

Again, if this kid didn't come through our academy and plied his trade at a lower prem club most posters here wouldn't even know who he was. He keeps it simple because he doesn't have to ability to do anything more.

Impossible to judge so quickly with relatively so little exposure to first team football. If you strip everything away and didn't know anything of him other than his performance than not sure anyone would be impressed. That said you can't strip everything away and have to view him in the context of him being relatively young with little exposure to first team football.

Rarely have time for the whole 'unless you pretend the performance was better than it was you're not a big a fan as I am' unspoken subtext that saturates all conversations debates whenever someone from the academy gets a game.

Once he's started a dozen games then we can begin to make a decent assessment.

First match i see live, and i think he was one of our better players.
I loved to see an academy player who got promoted to the first team pretty much out of nothing, pushing the other players forward.
He had a brilliant match, should've had a penalty, and deserved to play 90 minutes.
Lost the ball alot less than Matic, and probably every other player out there.

Guess he's just not fancy enough, or cost enough, for some posters on here.

Next Dier? I can see him growing in to that kind of player.

He reminds me of a slightly bigger Fletcher with a little les finesse on the ball (Fletcher on the ball was hugely underrated imo).

That aside he played very well yesterday

Yeah Fletcher was very underrated player, I mean his ability on the ball. He also scored few important and very good goals too.

Don't see him like Fletcher though, Fletcher was all over the pitch, McTominay looks like a sitting type player. At least that's how he played for first team.

He got better as his game went on but sans the context of his experience 'very well', might be stretching it. This is where I think the academy tinted glasses turn a 'not bad' into a 'very well'.

Reminds me a bit more about Matic than Fletcher.
Think he'll be a decent player for us whoever he reminds us of :)

Yeah not sure how good he will end up or whether he will be in PL, but for a young player he is doing well enough when given chances. These are the kind of players who will save millions we usually spend on squad players.

If he ever turns out to be as good as Dier, then that's around 50m saved for us. We were after Dier in the summer I think, I can definetely see the resemblance in playing styles off the two.

I'm happy for the kid. I'm glad that bringing through players from the academy is still part of the club's DNA, despite the financial possibilities and impatience that seems to be ingrained in modern football. And this isn't an LVG "let's throw on every young player possible" thing either, McTominay's getting playing time under a manager who hasn't been known as the biggest youth promoter and in a time period where having success is essential for the club after some dire years.

I never thought McTominay would have played 90 minutes in 6 competitive matches this season by early February, half of them coming in PL and CL. And I never thought people would moan about it either, since, you know, promoting youth has always been a big part of that club. I hope he follows the likes of Lingard and establishes himself in the first team.

«He always plays simple. Against opponents like Huddersfield, with so many bodies around ball, simplicity sometimes is genius.»

Mourinho after todays game. The important point here is that he does what the coach wants him to. You can hardly ask for more.

So he did what Ander is criticized for by our fans but got praised for it by Mourinho.

He could turn into quite a decent player - still needs to impose himself slightly more, but he is starting to show his quality

Against Benfica he won the ball 4 times and made 65 passes at 86% accuracy

Against Bournmouth he won the ball 4 times and made 46 passes at 91% accuracy with 1 key pass

Yesterday against Huddersfield he won the ball 1 time and made 94 passes at 91% accuracy. Someone is going to tell me that we had more of the ball so there was less defensive work to do. Well Sanchez made 5 tackles alone, thats not the case.

So by his own standards he was less effective defensively than his previous full matches, but did more of the "water carrying" simple possession keeping that Ander and Matic are sometimes criticised for.

Id like to see us adopt a 433 with him as part of the midfield three. I think it would suit him more, get him some experience next to better players, and let him do what he does, keep it simple and keep it moving.

I agree. He has been decent, but need to impose himself more. I think he will as he develops and gets more experience.

There's no real reason to think he's a late developer, is there? He's quite big and moves well, doesn't seem to be a dribbler or have a great 2nd foot. The Fergie quotes about Lingard being a late developer make sense since he was so small, but you can't just assume every player is a late developer.

McTominay finished growing last year, did he not? When a player grows until he is 20 I would argue he is a late developer.

To be given a start at one of the biggest team in the world and to not lose any cool when holding the ball for the attackers. It's massive responsibility for me.

Yes the oppo give the possession freely but it's such a big responsibility to be the bigger team and control the game.

He did well in that sense and full credits to him and Matic.

To be fair Alexis is always aggresive when chasing the ball back. That was my point, he was effective last night given his "simple" responsibilities.

You don't need a Zidane to be a water carrier, he may be our next Fletcher and that isn't a bad thing at all.

Yep no disagreement from me. If anything I think his previous games werent given quite enough credit. But I'm still yet to be convinced that he's someone who should be starting over our other options at this point. He looks like a squad player in the making and those are still very useful.

What I like about him is that hes unfazed by what must be a quick change and sudden change in his short career. To go from u23s to first team starter playing ahead of Paul Pogba is a massive step. Not just that, playing for a United side led by the infamous youth player destroying monster, Mourinho, would also add to the pressure as he has a lot to prove. However, nothing seems to affect him, he does what has been asked from him, its simple but effective.

You’re 100% corrrct Very well for his status as a Young’s kid playing for the first few times is what I’m judging him from. Hence the very well part, if Matic gave the same performance I’d say he did ok. I thought that was what everyone does? Just like a foreign player being given leeway and time to settle.

Perhaps, I just can't see it though. There's no x factor about him, no outstanding ability. He just does the basics well enough and very little else. I think to accommodate a position in our squad, a player needs to offer more than just a solid foundation.

Meh, nothing special, he will become one of those former players we see playing for a bottom premier league club ( which isnt a bad thing may I add)
