People here should know by now. JM would never play any player leave alone a kid for the sake of it. Brutally honest manager.

What pleased me the most is that he has that line splitting pass in him. he used it a few times and may not have come off, but he's spotting it which bodes well.
he hit 1 or 2 such passes. Matic hit some 4 or 5 such passes. Overall, he kept it simple and played well. I think he needs to define his role, as in he has to take on a specified role as in if he is attack minded, defensive or box to box. Many youngsters who seem to do okay generally gets played here and there in different positions, ultimately not becoming top in any particular position.

So far , so good for Mctominay, but i see him more as a backup.

Well he obviously should be with the first team considering the situation we are in. He’s far better than Herrera in a two man midfield already.

I’m just curious to where these other 20-22 year old CMs are in the Premier League that are better than Scott.

Lewis Cook, Harry Winks, Tom Davies (arguable), Chalobah? Solly March also looks very good this season too. Loftus Cheek but not sure he is classed as a CM anymore

I think he looks great. I'd already be willing to take a chance on him in the summer.

We we're linked with him before he went to Bono, if he progresses I hope we still follow him and maybe take him

Not really into it so far, let's see what the story is by the end of season because I think he'll be playing quite a bit.

Kick a ball at a brick wall and it comes straight back at you. Any player can do what he has done today when the other side is camped in their half. He needs to do more to play for Man Utd.

«He always plays simple. Against opponents like Huddersfield, with so many bodies around ball, simplicity sometimes is genius.»

Mourinho after todays game. The important point here is that he does what the coach wants him to. You can hardly ask for more.

Of course you can ask for more.

Yep therefore never ever ever made a mistake or misjudged a player like Salah or De B?
They left because Chelsea wasn't a club where opportunities were easy to come by for developing players. Mourinho is at United now. Which is why McTominay isn't going to join your list, even though you want him to.

Thought he had a mare of a first half. Kept losing possession or having a bad touch which usually ended up with him getting clattered. 2nd half he played better.

Depends on Mouronho's tactics in a games; Jose loves a double base pivot to sit.

So many people quick to write off our 21 year old midfielder.

I wonder how good Matic was at 21? He signed for Chelsea for 1.5m and was Awfully weak and offered very little if I remember rightly.

This forum has no patience for late developers

He's very mature for his age. Could have done a bit better with his passing, but he kept it simple and stuck to the plan. I wonder how he would cope with being pressed though. If he can handle it then I would start him the big games over Herra

I think that he can really improve in the next year or two. It is clear that he needs to bulk up to not let himself get bullied like today. I can see him as an excellent box-to-box player in the future.

Is it just me or he had a good game overall.
Got a lot if beating from Huddersfield players too.

Apart from a little mistake at the beginning of the game I thought he did well, I wonder if he could play in Herrera's role in a 3 man mid.

I thought he grew into the game as well and I'm not a fan of him.

He's not first XI material, but maybe he could be a squad option. Maybe.

Played it very safe. Not very expansive in his passing. He's young and likely not yet confident enough to make those passes. Time will tell.

Given this must have been an unexpected start, thought he did very well. Hopefully he gets some more game time soon.

Solly March is a classic wide player

There's no real reason to think he's a late developer, is there? He's quite big and moves well, doesn't seem to be a dribbler or have a great 2nd foot. The Fergie quotes about Lingard being a late developer make sense since he was so small, but you can't just assume every player is a late developer.

I really enjoy watching him play, he moves the ball very quickly and always seems to make the right choice for such an inexperienced player. I don't really have an issue with him playing it simple, building on each performance is a good way to get into the team, and he got bashed around the field today yet maintained his composure. Also like the way he always seems to have a wander forward towards the end of games, could be on the end of some crosses or through balls in the future.

People expecting a youth player to come out of the academy and play like an experienced professional within 10 games? The caf is a crazy place at times, Mctominay hasn't finished developing as a player yet, he was a #10 up until recently and is learning a new role, being 21 doesn't mean anything, he's still a young pro as he hasn't had first team experience.

A lot of people in this thread need to realise no player comes out of an academy a finished product and to give him time to see how he develops.

I like him. He's not a flair player, but not everyone needs to be. Seems to have good positional sense and a reasonable passing range. Would be happy to see him get the occasional game over the next year or so to see how he develops. I think he makes an adequate backup for Matic at present.

He's more mature than Pogba as a player, which is pretty crazy. What makes me laugh is that Pogba is capable of doing everything he can and more, yet Pogba 'can't play in a midfield two'. Utter rubbish, Pogba needs to sort himself out.

As for McTominay, I like him and don't mind seeing him in the team at all. Reminds me of Fletcher, a player who I originally didn't rate but proved me horrendously wrong. I think McTominay can have a similar influence over the coming years.

I see, the transfer muppets are up in arms if another academic player makes the proper brake through into the first team.

Good post. If pogba was asked to do a job in a midfield 2, he should be able to do it.

He clearly doesn't have the technique and touch to withstand being pressed. I think that's fairly obvious.

He's just a taller Tom Cleverly. Get rid for a good fee.

Young mature academy player with a great future in front of him but that’s not the problem. In a two man midfield he isn’t creative enough. If we use three midfielders then he’s maybe too similar to Matic. That’s Mourinho”s dilemma IMO.

With Fellaini injuried we have limited options. 4231 isn’t working. I think it’s clear as daylight that we are a much more balanced with three amigos. It gives Pogba the licence to roam around that we so desperately need in order to unlock teams who parks the bus and without sacrificing our defense. The question is who’s our best option next to P&M.

Maybe these latest injuries will give Scott plying time and experience to be a serious option even when Fellaini comes back. Against better teams I expect Herrera to be further up in the pecking order, or if Carrick is fit enough to take part, but I can’t see Scott McTominay as a serious option if all our midfielders are available.

You haven't watched him enough, if there's something that stands out its his ability to retain possession under pressure. I don't think he has ability to change the game in the final third but as a casimiro or fernandinho type player he is definitely good enough.

For years people on here have been asking for a big physical mobile ball winner in midfield and now we produced one and now they want him gone. When cleverley was here i always said if cleverley could win the ball in midfield some role could be found for him, turned out he couldn't. Mctominay clearly can so you arnt even comparing like for like.
