Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney | Wrexham AFC Watch

The average team promoted to League One hadn't just come up from the National League though.

Budget-wise, they should be looking at a playoff push, but as others have pointed out, they'll likely need significant squad overhaul. Mullin's stint in League One wasn't at all successful, so even he's not a guaranteed performer next season.

No but they were one of the strongest NL teams ever in history.

Apparently Mullin's numbers at other clubs weren't great because he was often playing out wide. I think he's definitely good enough for L1 but obviously he'll be up against better defenders, better GKs. He'll have fewer chances etc..

I think the core of the current Wrexham first team is definitely upper L1 already - the likes of Lee, Mullin, Evans, McClean, EOC, Cannon etc are quality players.

I think they'll be looking to add real quality to the first team also.

They'll need real quality for basically each position in the spine of the team i.e. CB, CM, CF and maybe WB.

They'll have one of the highest revenues in L1, if not the highest, so signing players shouldn't be a problem.

Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised if they finished just outside the playoffs even next season. It's really difficult to gauge right now.

The top 6/7/8 teams in L1 are very good, but beneath that not so good.
That's why I think they could sneak into 6th place, but also they could fall short at 7th or 8th or 9th.

I think top 10 would still be a good season.

Weird career path.

League Two loan at Crewe, recalled in order to be loaned out to the 2nd best team in Austria and wins the cup.

Back to League Two again last season where you'd think he might be playing in Europe for a similar sized club as Sturm Graz or something like Championship standard. Guess he couldn't have been very good at all in Austria?

Now get released by Arsenal.

that would be a massive coup for them to get this kid for another year

They'll certainly have to improve in the back 5 and probably an additional CM and striker but if they can finish in the top 10 that would be an amazing season.

Financially it looks like they aren't going to be shy of getting sponsors and making it easier for them to purchase higher quality players

They’ll probably get him for longer than that, considering Arsenal have released him. Based on McElhenney’s comments they’re close to completing the signing.

Apparently he has lots of areas of his game which need improvement such as playing out from the back.

Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney has not given up on signing Gareth Bale, saying "the offer is still on the table".

McElhenney has previously tried to coax the former Wales and Real Madrid star out of retirement via social media., external

Bale stepped away from football in January 2023 as his country's record men's goalscorer, after helping Wales to a first World Cup appearance in 64 years.

McElhenney, who alongside fellow actor Ryan Reynolds took over Wrexham in February 2021, has stepped up his efforts to sign the 34-year-old following the club's promotion to League One.

"Gareth Bale is still technically available! I don't know, I made the plea last year and I'm just going to tell Gareth that the offer's still on the table," he said.

Cheers, makes sense otherwise I'd have thought Sturm Graz would have wanted him back after helping them to win the cup seeing as he was available for loan again. They loaned a Dutch 'keeper from Brighton instead this past season and they won the double, dethroning Salzburg after 10 years.

There's always the chance Okonkwo was homesick I suppose.

Their sporting director said at the time they wanted him back and were trying to get him back so yeah could've just wanted to be closer to home.

I haven't seen enough of him but apparently he's a good keeper but isn't PL quality.

So Wrexham are competing with Championship clubs for him.

I'd imagine he'll sign for Wrexham anyway but I guess the question is wages.

He seems happy there and is guaranteed to start so he should sign. He's still young for a keeper so no harm playing in L1 for a year or two.

They were recruiting players for League Two when they were in the National League though, and likewise last year they were recruiting players for League One when they were in League Two. Few wise additions this summer, and they will easily finish in the top half/potentially push for the play-offs.

Lazy BBC writers again.

It’s a throw away comment and they make an article from it. They could grow but the main one will be The Kop which will add a few k and is in progress. After that, it’s get harder, especially the Mold Road stand which is right next to …. the Mold Road.
Being so close to the road isn’t ideal, and personally I don’t think they’ll touch that stand until last as they might have to knock down the Turf as it’s so close to the stand
. They could do the other 3 sides no problem though, if they buy the land off Glyndwr and fill in the 3 other corners.

got to do the Kip first though, still no sign of any work going on yet, as development consent hasn’t been reached yet as far as I believe.

I’d probably get a season ticket (price permitting) if there was enough space and take the kids.

Just don’t see how you get construction equipment on it, when it’s a pavement width from a main road in/out of Wrexham. Not sure about opposite either with the student flats quite close.

Kop has been slow, got formal permission last year (?) then did the temp stand short term, but that’ll have to come down soon too.

Big season coming, think it’s a bigger jump from 2 to 1, than Conf to 2.

Are you from Wrexham or nearby?

I'd imagine they're contemplating buying the student apartments. £11m is obviously a lot for a L1 club but isn't for a PL club or a big Championship club, particularly since it's an investment which increases revenue.

Exactly.
They're probably the strongest NL team in history and last year they finished strongly despite a slow start.

We'll have to see what signings they bring in, but top 10 or playoffs is a realistic target.
But there's definitely 6 to 8 very strong teams in L1 this year so it won't be easy.

I wonder what kind of attendance this league 1 match would have got in the US, it would have to have been a big one to make it worthwhile.

I have no idea. I presume they’ve done some market research and concluded it would be worth it financially, though I’d imagine Wrexham would be carrying the bulk of the attraction there. I’m glad it was shut down though. What a nonsensical thing to request.

Yeah I live in Wrexham. Although I'm not from there, and don't support them, I do get to the odd game when I can be arsed or get a ticket.

Rename Birmingham City to Peaky Blinders FC and they'll be huge in the US.
I reckon they should list all the big name stars who have played in USA and then get the biggest name they can possibly attract to join their club in some capacity.

Off the top of my head, Wayne Rooney. Rooney to Birmingham, you heard it here first

He was their manager last season and a decent part of the reason they went down.

Playing league games abroad would be the death of the sport in this country. It'll start off with "just" one game and before you know it they'll be shoe horning American soccer franchises into the English football league system.

What English football has is completely unique in world sports. A league system which has existed for 150 years, made up of over 100 well supported historic professional clubs. The fact that you can go 6 or 7 tiers deep and still find clubs with attendances in the 0000s is remarkable.

Honestly its the envy of the world and no small wonder the Americans are so keen to dig their nails in and make it their own. Don't let them. All the money in the world can't buy what we have.

I like to think this was satire instead of just pure ignorance of any football outside your own nose

Some of the their key players in the promotions have been released.

Aaron Hayden, Rob Lainton, Ben Tozer, Jordan Tunnicliffe and Luke Young all released at the end of their contracts.
They've now discovered that an admin error means Tunnicliffe still has 12 months on his contract

7/2 odds of them getting promoted to Championship is utterly wild for a newly promoted team - but i suppose doing it once already means its justified.

Would be absolutely wild to see them in the Championship. Big admiration for the work they've put in over there.
It would be interesting to see if they can get a deep cup run this season.

Probably a lot of money being bet on them due to their name value. The odds simply adjust accordingly.

Saw one of the players from the women's team got a bit of stick from Wrexham locals the other day. There was some red carpet interview where she said:

"Have you seen the amazing looking cars and the buildings and the people? It’s beautiful! It’s not like Wrexham. You know, I was walking down the street and there are these flowers, cactus. You wouldn’t see that in Wrexham because unfortunately it would get destroyed. Out here, there’s so much respect. And I’ve got a lot of respect for people who respect their country, you know?"

Never been to Wrexham and I don't imagine it's great but it's probably not a good idea to be critical of the place you're representing. Also obvious that they're in a bit of a bubble on the tour, lots of shitholes in the USA too. Understandable to a degree I suppose, getting to visit places and do things she mightn't have dreamed of at one point and getting a bit carried away with the experience. Add in no media training etc.

They don't appear to be very good, got beat 9-0 by a team that plays in the regional California league.

That's hilarious. Imagine if Bruno did that on United's US tour.

"Nice out here isn't it? Not like Manchester, that place is a right shit hole".

I moved here 18 months ago, and can fully agree with her. The villages around the town are really nice, but the centre is skaghead central.

I'm going to the friendly tomorrow against Fleetwood, me and 4 kids cost me £35, which isn't to be sniffed at.
