Russian War Crimes in Ukraine

I'm not the news, with all respect i don't need to have pointed out all the Russian crimes (from who it is expected) to then discuss a Ukranian one. No one has made any such claim about equal weighting so the balance point is moot.

I know you've mentioned you have family there and I'm aware others do, I'm sensitive to that but you won't succesfully gatekeep the discussion by demanding such conditions.

There is no justification for any war crime. Anyone trying to add disclaimers or qualifiers really needs to self reflect because that's a slippery slope.
Usually I'd agree with you but one side here has openly talked about committing genocide and the pictures back it up. In that scenario of seeing your people killed , it's not easy to just walk away . For us sitting and talking about it it's easy to say "no war crimes" but there has never been a war without war crimes and here with civilians being clearly targeted I understand but don't agree with the UA side here

Sure, but try to have the same energy for every single war crime we have evidence for on both sides. If so, we’d discuss the Russian ones from midnight to 23:58 then spend two minutes on the ones from the Ukrainian side.

People are placing a disproportionate focus on the odd pieces of evidence on war crimes from the Ukrainian side, whereas most of the individual Russian ones get swept up into broad brushstrokes.

Reminds me of things like climate change debates, where they have the scientist debating one-on-one with the denier. The format completely fails to take into account that a fairer picture would be 99 scientists vs one denier.

If by gatekeeping the discussion you mean that I challenge people – especially those who claim to want to provide equal attention to all the war crimes and uphold them to actually do that – then I am happy to own that tag. At the moment you are just looking at the heavily lop-sided scales of crimes, then commenting that there’s “very fine people on both sides”.

You’ve proven yourself here. You have way more energy for that one video of a Russian being shot in captivity, than you do for the thirty-plus civilians killed at a railway station in Kramatorsk or any other number of Russian atrocities that have been documented in the last week. Why? It’s false balance.

Jesus, the pictures coming out of Kramatorsk. They just did a missile attack at the station where everyone is attempting to heed Ukrainian advice to flee west from the Ukrainian-controlled areas of the Donbas. Looks like dozens dead amongst their suitcases.

To put it into perspective @Smores, there’s more Ukrainian civilians dead in one photo here, than Russians being shot or killed in captivity by Ukrainians in ALL the gonzo videos we have seen throughout the war.

I won’t direct link, but check @GirkinGirkin’s latest tweets or any Ukrainian journalist as they are now reporting on it.
They keep pushing the boundaries of what they can get away with. How long can this go on?

Every leader or military commander knows that even the most precise war/battle plans usually do not survive the first engagement with the enemy hence;
"Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war".
The moment civilians/non-combatants get targeted, or even are just caught up in war but are not afforded sanctuary or givens means of escape, then 'war crimes' have commenced... genocide comes later.

I wrote a long post but I'll just say this instead.

Its bizarre to question the loyalty of someone for having a moral reaction to excuses/justifications of a war crime.

You nor anyone else needs my opinion or evidence that Russia are systematically committing war crimes, you know these things. Why you need someone to tell you what you already know before you feel you can consider their comments is something only you can answer.

Sorry. It doesn’t help that I am having different parts of this argument with multiple different posters and posts are moving across threads. I may have made a post that was better responding to another user. The point I was making was that:

A) There will inevitably be war crimes committed by both sides and it is naive to not believe that.

B) The prevalence and severity of the war crimes being committed by both sides are in no way comparable, yet proportionally each war crime potentially being committed by the Ukrainian side now already gets a disproportionate focus relative to the total volume of them in this war. Why? That’s a not a balanced and objective approach to reporting the war.

C) Holding the Ukrainians to a standard where if they commit any war crimes then they are as equally bad as the Russians is completely unjust.

[As a separate point, why have all the latest developments about the war unfolding in Kramatorsk now been moved here? It’s getting more and more difficult to keep track of any discussion. I appreciate this discussion now being here, but not the Kramatorsk updates.]

Did you notice how they were all about Russian War Crimes in Ukraine?
The first posts are about a Russian military attack that, yes, results in what looks to be a war crime. I get the subsequent discussion on wider war crimes being here, but if news-focussed posts on Russian missiles hitting a city isn’t on topic for the war thread then what is? That will be the main focus of the war reporting for the next 24 hours.

You shouldn’t need to straddle across and check two threads to follow the main discussion of the war.

This is the Russian TV spin, regardless:

You’re the one who made the post about the ongoing war crimes debate.

Which shows how trying to separate all this discussion into two separate threads is pointless. How do you cut between the developments of the war and war crimes? In most cases Russia’s offence consists of simply committing war crimes, given they have long since given up the pretence of pursuing a legal, morally justified war from an international perspective.

Pointless to you, possibly… considering how frequently your posts find the wrong thread. As it stands, however, admin requested a war crimes thread and posts will be moved into it that are on that topic.

This stuff makes me sick, pictures from the Kramatorsk railway station today. War is hell.

Saw the most gruesome images on the r/Ukraine subreddit from today’s bombing.

feck Putin and feck Russia. Little children ffs:(

I applaud those that can show restraint but I forsee less and less Russian soldiers being captured alive as time goes on.

It happened as a matter of course from around 1916 onwards in WW1.

During an advance, individual soldiers were instructed to escort prisoners to the rear. Very often a mixture of not wanting to risk their lives from artillery and hatred from seeing friends killed meant they executed the PoWs.

The kid with half of his head blown off?

Saw it... Putain.

Anonymous ought to hack and bombard Russian state TV every single day with those photos. If that's the only way to show Russians how gruesome reality on the ground is, then so be it.

You pray all the reports of child rape are some sort of propaganda... but apparently a Russian soldier named Alexey Bychkov has released a video of himself sexually abusing a baby.

As if genocide and killing civilians wasnt bad enough, there are multiple reports of rapes including children and its going around twitter/reddit that this soldier Aleksey Bychkov filmed himself raping and torturing a toddler. Im not sure about the last part because I dont want to look into this but these sick fks have gone full evil. Like Nazi level and worse evil. Even if some of these reports are fakes (which I doubt) if any of this is true 100mill here and there in weapons and the aid sent so far is not enough. Just send everything for fks sake. Planes included. Fk them.

Dont watch or share the video if you come across it!

I would probably have to ban myself if I posted what I hope happens to him.

I have no problem taking my gun and blowing his head off, wouldn't lose a second of sleep. I fecking knew this fecking war would get monstrous. I need a break from the news. Memories from my experience of war are bubbling to the surface and I stop functioning normally when they do.
