Russian invasion of Ukraine | Fewer tweets, more discussion

I'm genuinely interested but does anyone know if Russian state TV/Propaganda try to push the narrative that Russia are the only country with nukes?

Otherwise it's a strange threat to make because shortly after they launched nukes at anywhere in Western Europe or North America there would be just as many nukes heading towards Russia.

I think at this stage they are using the Nuke word as a way to ensure Nato doesn't become militarily involved in Ukraine.

When it comes to conventional war they have proven themselves to be utterly incompetent and if they didn't have the threat of Nuclear weapons, they probably realise Nato would have ended this by now.

I've noticed that periodically Russia will drop the threat of Nukes but in reality no one would ever want that to happen because the repercussions on Russia would be huge. They just want to keep that deterrent in place so no one messes with them

From the BBC:

"Russian troops are increasingly refusing to take part in combat in Ukraine, the Ukrainian defence ministry's main intelligence directorate says.

In a post on the Telegram messenging service, it says several units of the 70th Guards Motorised Regiment have openly refused to take part in the war and demanded that they be returned to the areas where they are normally deployed.

Unit commanders are making every effort to hide the cases of disobedience, the directorate says, with the most un-cooperative servicemen "sent to the most dangerous area of the front-line in the hope that they would be killed quickly", the post claims.

The agency says the Russian Federal Security Service has decided to infiltrate the regiment's units with "agents and informants".

The BBC is not able to verify this information independently."

The BBC reports:

"Kremlin insider admits to war 'difficulties'

Another pro-Kremlin voice has admitted to "difficulties" in the war with Ukraine, which Russia calls a 'special military operation'.

But Rashid Nurgaliyev, a deputy secretary of Vladimir Putin's Security Council, insisted Russia would achieve its objectives - including the "denazification of Ukraine".
It follows remarks by a retired colonel and military analyst on primetime Russian TV earlier this week, in which Mikhail Khodarenok warned "the situation [for Russia] will clearly get worse".

"We are in total political isolation and the whole world is against us, even if we don't want to admit it," said Khodarenok, while appearing on flagship talk show 60 Minutes.
Russia's Security Council is today holding a meeting with nearly 100 foreign ambassadors to discuss the threats posed by "closed laboratories" and "neo-Nazism".

Nurgaliyev told the gathered ambassadors: "In spite of all the existing difficulties, the special military operation will be completed - while its objectives, including the ones to do with the demilitarisation and denazification of Ukraine, [and] defence of the Donetsk People's Republic and Luhansk People's Republic will be carried out in full."

His remarks were reported by Russia's Interfax news agency.
BBC Russia editor Steve Rosenberg has suggested the Kremlin may be preparing the Russian public for negative news on the progress of the invasion."

It definitely sounds like Russian state TV is starting to downplay expectations and get the public ready for some bad news (albeit still a distortion of what’s actually been happening).

Probably better for the Whataboutery thread, but I don't go in there:

Hilarious Freudian slip.

Deep down, all the brutality of the Iraq invasion is nearby in GWB’s mind and what Putin is doing reminds him of his own “achievements”.

He got away with it, he should be living a quite life away from the light but instead he is being given platforms to lecture people about right and wrong. Not to mention his own contribution to the rise of Putin’s rule. His reaction when Putin fecked up Grozny was inexistant and very shy again when Putin invaded Georgia..

Scumbags:

Classy folks. "Doesn't matter how many PhDs she has, how many languages she speaks, that's not what it takes. She needs to be a straight white man in order to represent the US."

Hard to believe the Republicans aren't still good friends with them really, they have so much in common

The BBC reports:

"Putin sacking top commanders over military failures - UK

Britain's Ministry of Defence has published its daily intelligence update, which today focuses on Russia allegedly firing a number of senior army commanders for underperforming in the Ukrainian war.

It also accuses the Kremlin of running a military and security operation fraught with "coverups and scapegoating" - an accusation often hurled at Moscow, and not just by the UK.

A small but comprehensive list of those believed to have been dismissed by Vladimir Putin includes:

Lieutenant General Serhiy Kisel, who commanded the elite 1st Guards Tank Army, for failing to capture Kharkiv
Vice Admiral Igor Osipov, who commanded Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, following the sinking of the Moskva cruiser in April
Russian Chief of General Staff Valeriy Gerasimov, who, the MoD says, may well still be in post but it's unclear whether he retains confidence"

They're saying something a bit different, although not in any way less racist, misogynistic & homophobic to be fair. They assume that she doesn't have any of these credentials for whatever reason (I'm sure that she does), but a white heterosexual male that finished a good university, has a PhD and speaks many languages will be overlooked in USA in order to appoint a black woman.

I wonder how many languages does he himself speak fluently (it seems like he should know English as he was a U.S. correspondent at some point though). He doesn't have a PhD though, even a fake one.

Ramping up the guerrilla / insurgency campaign
Tbf I'm not sure if that's something that they're worried about at the moment. The important bit is to state that there are still Azov soldiers in Azovstal.

Oh I see, still an incredibly dumb point given she's a lecturer at Columbia and speaks English, French and Haitian Creole. (Indeed it might be obvious that she would speak more than one language given she's French but works in the US in a public speaking role...)

Weird news of today/yesterday, journalists have identified the new love interest/husband (they have a child together) of one of Putin's daughters and his surname is... Zelensky! No relation though.

Google ‘Republican lawmakers Moscow trip.’

Considering how decrepit the Russian military is along with those Google Maps images of polystyrene aircraft polyfilling their airbases, what’s the betting that their Nuclear capabilities are far less impressive than they claim?

Don’t get me wrong I imagine they have enough for some absolutely devastating attacks that would trigger MAD so it’s probably a pointless discussion anyway.

Azov soldiers stuck on Azovstal? The tweet that you were responding to originally.
Okay... but I wasn't saying they were "worried" about anything. I was saying that them staying behind plus the stuff happening in Melitopol seems like a concerted effort to increase behind the lines activities in Russian occupied areas of Ukraine.

I thought up a very stupid hypothetical test for that. Take one of those deserted pacific islands that have been used in the past for nuclear testing. The US picks one specific Russian launch device (ICBM or SSBN, like "launch from silo 3 at XYZ missile field") and Russia does the same to the US. Then each side has to launch at the island and we all see if they hit the target and the boom goes as expected.

Its extremely expensive to service the thermonuclear physics packages, they need refill with tritium gas and extraction of helium among other things. The missiles itself need regular maintenance in order to be on alert. I think this is one area that is ripe for corruption, because it's very realistic to assume these will never be used, and if they are, well there probably won't be anyone left to ask you.

Aren’t the fake aircraft images decoys created by UA (along with mannequins in the trenches) to create false targets? Or maybe I am not referring to the same thing.
