Russian invasion of Ukraine | Fewer tweets, more discussion

I'm from Belgium. I married in Ukraine, and we face the exact same policies as you when it comes to visa. Prove finances etc... it's a real pain in the ass. So it's not just Britain.
It’s even worse here now. At least in Belgium, getting citizenship is much quicker for spouse. Ukrainians also have visa-free access to Schengen too. Finally being in the EU, you could use the option of simply going to any other EU country and your spouse being able to join you to live instantly without draconian visas and fees.

We should have done that in hindsight after marriage, gone to live in Germany or Italy.

I live in Norway. And I honestly don’t think I’ll be needed for a while - if ever.
But some of this “let’s take the fight to them! They asked for it! How long can we just watch them do this? Let’s go!!!” - talk is insane to me. Start talking that shit if you enlist and are actually ready to go yourself. The wish for retaliation and intervention comes at a cost. Part of that cost might be me and my friends. I’m really not ready for that. But there is seemingly a lot of tough guys ready for battle in here! And if they’re serious, and actually are ready and willing to fight, they have my utmost respect. I’m just not sure half of them are.
I freely admit that I have no desire to fight or die in a war because the latter will happen to me very quickly (never had the training for it, for one).

I also appreciate your position but I also think a lot of 'tough guys' attitude is about going all-in on sanctions, targeting those close to Putin and generally trying to undermine him within. It feels to me there's a lot more that could be done before we engage Russia.

Abramovich's daughter was publicly opposing Putin's war yesterday. Surely, this can be used to subvert this guy and push for change in Russia.

No one wants to see the army deployed but at what point do we say enough is enough? It's just all really scary

You just sound like a selfish prick who doesn't give a shit that innocent Ukrainians are dying. If this is the mentality of everyone in the nato the world will be fecked soon.

You sound like a bit of a cnut. I hope you've served or serve, otherwise kindly go fist yourself.

And yeah, I'll take my forum warning to say that.

Okay  :wenger: :wenger:

indeed and emboldened china could then start thinking about further wxpansion australia, japan……..
Japan, maybe. But I don't see China as being expansionist enough to go for Australia.

The global empire that China's building is one that's made up of trading posts and shipping ports for the financial betterment of the Han majoirty in the East of the country. They're not going to colonise or set up puppet govenments in non-contiguous parts of the world. There's too much profit to be made from economically dominating Australia rather than militarily doing so.

Unlike most historical empires, the goal for China is money rather than glory. That prevailing insularity and monoculturalism is a big part of what defines China at all.

Japan, obviously, is a different matter. There's too much history in that one for China to be entirely rational.

A fair and expected response. I’m not sure I agree, but I totally get your point. I expect you to be updating us from the eastern front when they call for volunteers to fight.
Mate you’re well within your right to have these thoughts and concerns. I found it a great post that made a lot of sense.

Credit to the Ukrainian government by the way. I can't help but think that communicating in English helps to gain international support. I think this will be a highly studied subject.

I think the choice whether we should fight is not with us anymore. Putin already made it. Are we just going to let him get away with taking Ukraine then? If I had the right military training for years, like you had apparently, I would go.
I'm sure you would yeah. Stick to your internet assaults, I reckon.

“If I had years of training I’d go” yeah, sure. Very convincing! I totally buy that.
Ultimately you point your gun at your enemy and pull the trigger. Follow orders of more trained personell. Off you go, then! Or are you selfish?

you don't need training. Ukraine is arming anyone between 18 and 60. Good luck and keep us updated!

All of that while Russia has not finished with COVID, which has claimed at least 752 lives over there yesterday? Madness.

You do wonder how COVID has impacted this whole situation, and more pertinently the recovery from it. And not simply just in sending Vlad the Mad further round the bend.

As Western/EU/Scandinavian countries look to be reaching the end of their pandemics, thanks to their vaccines and natural immunity nullifying the worst of new variants, Russia is sort of still on the flip side.

I'm sure Putin is very wary of the optics and potential impact on his public perception of a situation where Western Europe and even some former Soviet states are able to step ahead of Russia in their recovery process.

No doubt you'll be off down the army careers centre first thing Monday morning to put your app in won't you?

It wasn't a fair response. One can want retaliation and also understand that an all-out war is a terrible outcome. People seem to underestimate that the issue isn't really for the people willing and able to fight but for the fact that war largely affect millions of people that aren't fighters kids, elderly and various people that can't fight, they will be collateral damages either due to bombs, bullets or humanitarian crisis(lack of food, medicines, clean water, heating).

There is nothing better than peace whether one wants it or not.

Good to see condemnation coming from many sides. Hopefully all these signals and small moments catch on to the Russian elite & population. We need so much more internal resistance against Putin.

157 Typhoons ( eurofighters) 35 Lightining 2, the New Sabre as well as the older Rapier, Shorad systems. Then we can add the Navy to it

Really wish that was the case. But sadly not.
The RAF website shows some 130 Typhoon. But almost 30% of these are either just tail numbers i.e. not active aircraft, or they are the initial Trance 1 jets that are being removed from service because they are not capable of much.
Operational Typhoon are actually just over 100.
And the F35 only amount to the low 20's.

Maybe I went overboard with my comment, but I lived in Kyiv 6 months. I only returned home two months ago, and my wife's family is in big trouble there. I'm just terribly annoyed and worried it'll get worse. So please give me a break if I talk bullshit.

This makes your comments even worse, to be fair.
