Rugby Union 23/24 Discussion

@T00lsh3d tough afternoon for Doncaster down in Cornwall. That might be the coldest I’ve ever been at a game of rugby.
I haven’t been down to Donny all season mate. Playing football Sunday mornings and having to do responsible family shit on Saturdays - it sucks

A quick look at the table would suggest Donny are having a few tough afternoons.

FYI it was lung-destroyingly cold playing football up here as well. Calves, knees, lungs all destroyed

I know the feeling. I think that was my third game of the season, despite it only being a 20 minute walk from my front door.

I don’t miss playing sport in those conditions. Felt sorry for the wingers the most, stood around freezing with no hope of the ball being slung out wide.

This reminds a number of December late afternoon. I'm pretty sure that they design the stadiums to make you drink and stop feeling any sort of cold.

Stadium is a very generous description of Championship grounds  my pint was definitely getting colder as I was drinking it.

I was at the Bath v La Rochelle game a couple weeks ago in that red weather warning and it wasn’t as bad as this. No rain, but the wind was unbelievable.

Ah yes, you left Bath as soon as they got good

I’m playing 3 days a week at the moment, hoping to lean down in time for next seasons vets league. Unfortunately, the body takes so much punishment playing that I’ve just had to consume a monstrous mixed kebab for recovery purposes…..

For some reason I expected this. Keep in mind that for a long time that was my main reference for a Rugby stadium. Anything bigger than that is just extravagant.

Not far off, except there is temporary seating on two sides. The main stand is unbelievably old and full of asbestos. This is the best photo I can find.

Unfortunately promotion to the Premiership is impossible for all these clubs due to the stadiums not meeting requirements.

That’s the way mate. You know your body best and what it needs to recover.

Who knows, we had what I believe some describe as a "cowshed" for most of our history. The gradual upgrades over the decades have started to make it a pretty decent ground now.

At the very least an impact sub. Casey has improved a lot and been in great form for Ireland. JGP isn’t getting any younger and the gap between them has closed right down.
Fair enough. I’m still hoping you roll out Conor Murray for England at the aviva ;)

Think I’ll watch Munster Leinster instead of the Prem or football

Good man. Bummer you’re being denied the battle of the Ireland 10s though. I don’t fully understand the rules that keep Crowley out. Would like someone to explain that to me.
It makes no sense, he basically was rested during the internationals and won't play again for another 11 days and then you have beirne, who played all the internationals and only missed one club game.

I’ll be rooting for the underdogs pal ;)

On the 10’s, I’d be shocked if the starting spot wasn’t Prendergasts. His superior passing should unlock that Irish backline.

And as I say that he gets turned over in his own 22

Prendergast reminds me of Stephen Larkham. Not sure if it’s his actual game or maybe his weird running mechanics

Munster are a bit shit at the moment.

Interesting to see how the teams fair in Europe with Munster playing Saracens and Leinster having their favourite match up away to La Rochelle

We’re shit (especially shit when attacking inside the 22), but you cannot play rugby against refereeing like this second half.

Just blatantly one sided officiating from a hundred small snowballing decisions to 3 massive obvious ones.

Leinster are a great side and may well have bate us anyway, but the scoreline is down to their man of the match in yellow.

may?

Rugby is a game of momentum. Anybody who has played at any half decent level can tell you that.

If Leinster are penalised for even 10% of the litany of ruck offences they committed in the first half, Munster go into half time with points on the board.

If they are yellow carded for the infringement and penalty awarded when we scored immediately after their "final" warning, or for any of their subsequent penalties later on, the dynamics of the game change.

If they aren't allowed to score a blatantly illegal third try just after we had scored, setup by a player playing the ball off the ground after a counterruck, the dynamics of the game change.

If Beirne wasn't incorrectly penalised for a textbook turnover in the build up to the fourth try, Leinster don't get to finish with the polish that allows you to be so smug in your dismissal of that as a competitive game. But the possession, territory, tackles and time spent in red zone tell a different story.

We are poor - we lack incision inside the 22 and without Crowley lack anybody who can play heads up rugby. We have too many journeymen like Scannell and Wycherley who have spent their careers losing to Leinster and our set piece is awful. But that wasn't a vintage performance from Leinster either, and with a capable referee the scoreline and potentially even the result looks a lot different.

It was a one sided game. Leinster’s defence was far too good for Munster. It looked like we could give you as much ball as you wanted and you’d never do much with it. Conversely, Leinster looked like scoring almost every time they got inside the 22. Although I agree it definitely wasn’t a vintage performance.

The ref didn’t have a great game, a few of his decisions were hard to understand (starting with the very first penalty in the game when he pinged Henshaw for not releasing before a jackal, after a tackle he wasn’t even involved in!) but there was only one team ever winning, with or without the iffy calls. Considering the injuries and the harsh withdrawal of Crowley I thought you gave a great account of yourselves but trying to claim that Leinster needed a biased referee to win comes across as pure sour grapes.

@T00lsh3d

What did you make of the ref’s performance as a neutral?

Because you were illegal in every fathomable way at every single ruck. It wasn't slight and it wasn't touch or go - it was blatant and undeniable - there isn't really much point in continuing a discussion if you weren't able to recognise that because you support the side it benefitted.

I watch a lot of rugby and I very, very rarely criticise referees (probably more in the last couple of years than the previous 30 because standards have fallen so far). I've also watched Munster lose too many times to Leinster in the past decade and a half to have anything left in the line of sour grapes.

But that was worst and most one sided performance I have seen from an official since Mike Adamson robbed Castres against Harlequins a few years ago. If it was Munster, I'd have taken zero satisfaction from a win like that and would be far too embarrassed to be online making glib and smug comments.

There’s nothing glib or smug about anything I’m saying. I’m genuinely surprised at your take on the game. Why would a Scottish referee be as incredibly biased as you seem to think he was?

Are we sure it isn’t just that Adamson’s ragingly incompetent? He’s shit enough that it could look like bias….but in reality I suspect it’s just bad refereeing
