Rugby Union 23/24 Discussion

No idea. There can’t be that much of a fixture pile-up, they’ve 3 less teams to play this season

I wonder if it’s a contracts-management thing, like the big players are on appearance-related bonuses?

Either way, I just watched the full match replay of an absolutely batshit game in the Top14 between Clermont and UBB. The whole game is worth a rewatch if it can be found, otherwise, highlights below:

Looks like an exciting match but that highlights video is one of the worst I've ever seen

Munster’s pack has been absolutely decimated by injuries another few here today now, edogbo’s last week was gutting one for the kid, doing your ankle at 20.

What do you think about Snyman? Pleased to have him off the wage bill and clear the path for Edogbo?

Ulster winning in Leinster right now but think they’ll face a tough last 15 mins

10 games in 3 years and then joins Leinster is like tevez on steroids in terms of back stabbing, I genuinely wish him nothing but injuries. Edogbo looks the real deal, the few games he had last season you could see his physicality, but this season his technique came to the forefront, hopefully he comes back stronger from the injury but you never know with the ankle.

Yep, missed some of the 1st what happened to jager, he was stretchered off, o donoghue looked bad held his knee immediately
Ralston blew out O'Donoghue's knee with a clear out. Hyperextended it. I don't think it was entirely deliberate but it was gruesome.

Jager wasn't entirely clear to me but he got crocked in a ruck too and had to off on a stretcher and a neck brace. Very worrying.

Hansen also seemed to get injured in a ruck near the end of the match too. Wrist/arm injury, hopefully not a break but could be.

Wow didn’t know it was so few, that’s grim. Any idea what his contract was?

Yea it was pretty bad alright, the way the leg went reminded me of how leavy’s career was ended hopefully it’s not that bad.

oh no I thought we might have been seeing the last of archer, tight head has been an issue for years.

Well he was brought in during the South African era at Munster so pretty big I’d say, the only reason he had to leave was klyne is now SA again and you can’t have multiple foreign players at a position, it’s strange though going to Leinster with the emergence of big Joe McCarthy.

@Xaviesta what happened to your post about Foster and Plymouth? I was shocked thinking it was NZ’s Foster but it’s the guy who was Gerrards assistant in Saudi, wasn’t it?. Unless I just made up that entire thing in my head/from a dream :nervous:

Nash will get a well overdue look in for the 6N now at least.

I'm off to Toulon with my old fella at the weekend. I was feeling fairly confident when I booked it, but this injury run has been absolutely horrific. There surely have to be questions about our medical and strength/conditioning departments? It feels like it's getting worse every year.

Carberry off at the end of the season as well. No harm really, but we've gone from having Carberry, Crowley, Healy and Flannery fighting for the 10 shirt, to having just Crowley 18 months later. With our record for keeping fellas fit, that's a dangerous game to be playing.

JPR Williams dead. I was actually his Bridgend tennis club league doubles partner for a couple of years.

Absolute legend am pretty gutted at this.

Just seen it announced on the telly at HT.

Met him a couple of times, just as part of a do.

Devastated. Loved that Wales team, loved the 74 Lions and loved him. All the talent in the world and if you wanted a fight, he was all for it … running half the pitch to launch himself at van Heerden on the Lions tour

What a fecking player :(

I met him in the small town of Whangarei in NZ when I was a kid, he was with the 1971 British lions team touring. My Mum was working at a jewellery store in town and rang dad to let him know the Lions team were in the shop. Dad grabbed my sister and I and we raced into the shop where I got about a dozen Lions Autographs. I remember JPR so clearly because I was in awe of his monster sideburns and long hair. Im pretty sure that Lions team was the most popular one to ever visit NZ because of how they played their rugby. He was brilliant, sad to hear he has passed.

Andy Farrell confirmed as British and Irish Lions head coach for 2025 tour to Australia.

No brainer really considering the current state of the various British rugby national teams.

If speculation from a few weeks ago is accurate, there could be a familiar face for Andy Farrell in the opposition coaches box for that series.

Yes, that try by Nash out of nowhere
Massive moment, absolutely pissed on Toulon’s chips. Been a really good watch, refs let play go a lot (though he’s been too lenient on the offside line)

I'd throw in the Toulon lineout as well and that's saying something when ours has been shocking all season.
Hodnett has been quality in this game, ahern is winger in a locks body
Yeah shoutout to Hodnett, he was outstanding….I imagine he’s a cnut to play against

Louis Rees says Dammit to Union; Joins the NFL.

Rees-Zammit to the NFL?!?! That’s mental.

As a Welshman, I am gutted.

The NFL teams are targettng international players now. There's a bunch of top GAA players going down the same path, hoping to be NFL kickers. Definitely unusual to hear about someone making the transition who doesn't kick the ball though. I wonder what position he hopes to play?

I haven't seen as much as a YouTube video from this guy but I'd guess his only chance at making an NFL roster is as a running back, given his rugby background.

He's plenty pacy for a rugby winger but I can only imaging players like American WR's will be quicker and more plentiful.

*attempting to go to the NFL. He’s got a way to go to convince a team to take a chance and then actually get on the field.
Surely he must have had some unofficial discussions with a team(s). Be a hell of a gamble if not, he’d probably get an easy 300k+ offer from a number of union clubs
